Good app to track shot distances and other stats?

Recommended Posts

Many years ago, pre 2013, I tracked stuff on OOBGolf. I had a system to make notes on my score card and I'd enter it once I got home. I'd track club off tee, distance, FW hit/direction of miss, distance of approach, club used, green hit or direction of miss, # of chips and putts, penalty strokes and sand shots. Assuming I start playing again and want to track stats to look for trends and see improvement, what are some good options? Oh, in case it matters I'm likely to play more 9 hole rounds than 18. I've heard of the grint and 18birdies and am trying to find more info.

Edit - I downloaded TheGrint and I see that it doesn't keep track of how far you hit a club. I have no problem writing down the info and typing it in later. 18Birdies seems to do it if you get the premium version. I don't need something to do it live and would like to not create my own spreadsheet, lol.

Have you looked into the Arccos system? I have it on a couple of my clubs and am considering it for my whole bag. I haven't researched it too much, but heard it is very impressive when used regularly.

i have the arccos smart caddie system. I like it lot because of the stat tracking and the smart caddie suggestions. GPS appears to be spot on and will take wind and elevation into account when suggesting a club. The stats finally told me what my eyes have been trying to say for years, i'm almost always short on approach shots and i should be clubbing up every time. The actual sensors are pretty easy to attach to the end of your grips and I don't even notice them anymore. I wish individual sensors were cheaper though as i do have a club or two i'd like to rotate in

I just put the arcoss sensors on a week or so ago. Seems pretty accurate so far. The system measureS everything. Small adjustment to my routine but easily done. Still learning but so far like it a lot.

How many rounds have you played with it? The only drawback seems to be the phone in your pocket. How is that going for you?

MyRoundPro is great for this keeps up with all the sats even does strokes gained. Personally I don’t really like tracking shots while I’m playing. Rather got back and do it from memory.

I'm used to entering it all after my round based on notes that I had on my scorecard. I had a notation system to keep track of it all and it was easy to do while playing. Things have changed some since I last did any tracking. Apps weren't as popular or maybe it was just me being a stick in the mud, lol.

Then you will love it. You can enter info online on their website also. Thing I like about it is you can enter in actual pin locations for the day and where your shot ended up based on that pin location.

I have been using Arccos as well. It works quite well. I have only a couple of rounds with it. So far, it failed to detect maybe one shot per round. So it is not quite foolproof yet. You have to get used to playing with your phone in your pocket to ensure the sensor pick up the hit. Finally it eats battery like candy. I could be 80% battery at the start of a round and end with maybe 25% by the time I am done.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll have to take a closer look at this. I love the concept but having my phone in my pocket is a bit meh to me. That's the direction things seem to be going though with golf GPSs. My current one is probably 7 years old and will power off mid round for no reason. So it's gotta get replaced and it sounds like Arccos would cover things.

all apps that do this require input on whatever watch (garmin or apple watch). you always seem to forget doing on one hole or another and it gets really distracting. i've used arccos the last year and although not perfect it works pretty good. the other thing you get is statistics over many rounds which is very valuable.

I’ll be interested to hear how you get on with it. With the free sensors deal from Ping I ended up getting a set. Unfortunately I didn’t think thru the timing - I’ve had them for 30 of my 90 day free trial and haven’t played once!

I've played 27 holes, 3 nine hole rounds, with them so far. I really like it so far. One of the interesting features is it will generate a handicap for you based on the data it collects. I don't know the actual details but they claim they have millions of rounds of data, so I assume they are comparing how you are doing to that pool of data. So after 27 holes, it says I play like a 28.8 or so. My driving, approach, and chipping are all 30.0, which seems to be the max they use. Sand is 25.9 and putting is 16.9.

I can believe it. My full swing is not good right now. I've not played in 6 - 7 years and my scores would have my index close to 33 - 36. I am short off the tee and miss fairways. My approaches are almost always short and I'm not a good chipper. Sand is hard to say, I have been practicing it since my new course has a lot of bunkers. My putting has always been good, but I do have my off days.

I switched to 4w off the tee and my fairway accuracy went up but I lost some yardage. Speaking of yardage...

This is what makes it 'interesting'. It has no clue what type of shot you are hitting based, outside of tee, sand, and usually putting. So it says I should be able to count on hitting my 6i 125. Yes, I'm short and I'm using that as my 140 club. Anyhow, I have a number of punches with it from trouble. So most of those get rolled into the numbers. It says it knows how to ignore mishit drives from your averages, so maybe it does the same if you chunk and iron a few yards.

Pairing it was easy. Using it on the course is pretty easy to. I'd say the one thing I wish was better is marking the location of the flag. I have been playing solo with no one behind me so I use the 'mark flag at current' location function. The problem is my phone GPS, Iphone 10XR. The location dot seems to wander around and it takes a bit before it kind of settle in what looks to be the right spot. Most every other shot it won't matter on, since we're talking yards, but on the green feet are more important.

Post round I have had to make some shot changes such as when I chip with my putter, or change fairway to rough when I missed the fairway by 2 feet. The only extra strokes it seems to register for me is with the putter and that could be because of how the phone was in my pocket, screen towards my leg. You can change # of putts on the main hole screen with a little +-. Maybe I'm toggling that somehow as I walk... It has missed a chip and a sand shot on me, both times I were similar. I was short with both shots and used the same club from within a few yards of my previous shot. The post round cleanup only takes a couple of minutes though and most of that is just me reviewing my manual score card with my chipping and putting notes compared to the app.

Outside of the GPS nitpick, I really like it. It's simplified my round since I used to write down a bunch of stats on my card and always pulled my GPS out of my pocket to mark my tee shots. The numbers will become more solid with more play. My sample size is small, so I expect some swings in what it says. But once you have a fair amount of data, it should be pretty accurate and it'll make some of the the things like partial shots, etc disappear in the wash. I think it's great and the post round analytics are cool such as on GIR I average 35 feet from the hole.

The thing I'd stress, since I'm typing a book it seems, is to take the numbers in context of your game. I hit a number of partial shots every round as part of my course management. That will lower my yardages. The approach distance has my miss as 140 feet short. On a couple par 3s I mishit my shots into the junk 50 - 60 yards off the tee. If I'm over 160 yards out, either I am taking a whack with a wood to get close or taking 2 shots to get in. So while I know I am short, I'm pretty sure I'm not almost 50 yards short on what I personally consider an approach shot.

Oh, it looks like they are going with a subscription service in 2020 and it's based on the sensors. So if you get them now, there'll be no subscription but once the new ones come out in early 2020, if you get those, then there will be.
