Butter irons?

Recommended Posts

Whether JDM or USDM, its about the process and material used by each OEM to make club heads. No, we don't need two categories. Titleist and Callaway and other OEM's have had certain club heads made in Japan and China, and and famous Epon has some made in Thailand. A while back Titleist had blades made in Japan for Tiger and other tour players. It's not the company name but the chosen materials, desired process and price, all of which dictate which facility on account they are limited in number.

We can't argue what's butter and what isn't as "Butter" is completely subjective. Our Feel which is based on the touch sensors in our hands and skin detect vibration intensity. Touch is a perception resulting from activation of receptors in the skin or fingers, throat and tongue, toes, and many other areas across the skin surface. Pressure receptors respond to impact, brushing, sustained grip, and vibrations, etc. Sound adds to the measure by determining level and depth of tone.

Also we know medically, when those touch and pressure sensors in the hands are damaged, feeling in one's hands are not acute as the sensors in another persons undamaged hands. A mechanic or fireman that uses tools or hauls equipment daily is more likely to have damaged sensors than a surgeon that wears two-golf gloves when playing golf. Simply speaking, what someone thinks is butter may very well be boring margarine.

My Nike VR Pro Combo’s were soft, but I think my Mizuno mp18’s take the cake. When your hitting them well, you can’t even feel the strike.

I would say along with Mizuno, Epon and Yonex are best for buttery soft. The Yonex “heat vacuum treatment” they are using on their forged heads definitely enhances their soft feel. Miura has a more “dense” feel that is indeed powerful and feels great. All four of these companies produce their forged heads in Japan.

My Hogan Apex Plus circa 99 are very buttery through the ball. I believe they are from Epon. I currently game P790's . The other day I used them back to back with Hogans at the range . It wasn't even close, but its not exactly apples to apples.

JDM vs USDM, I didn't mean Japanese company vs US company, I meant domestic market offering. Mizuno's US products are most butter for me for the US and they don't have the same products in Japan as the US. By the same token, US companies have some products that they offer in Japan that they don't in the US (Callaway Legacy Black comes to mind).

And Endo may provide forgings to other OEMs but it doesn't mean that those forgings are of the same quality as what they produce for themselves under their Epon brand.

Srixon z745/945

Mizuno hardos are an unrivaled bunch when it comes to homering how soft the irons are so they'll never admit it when it comes to this topic.

I've played a set of MP5s and MP18s and while they are soft the feel just doesn't stack up to the Srixons.

Crucify me Mizuno hardos.

Forged blades in general but my favorite are Cleveland 588 MB (even softer go back to the CMM metal irons, CG1/CG2.)

Mizuno offerings.

Honma TW-747/X.

This is the biggest misconception about forged VS. non, and so this thread is already doomed, but any iron out of the center is going to feel smooth and soft so long as you aren't playing a Pinnacle or Top Flite as your gamer ball... My S55s feel incredible when middled, different than others but I could easily describe them as buttery soft. A club does not have to be forged to produce exceptional feel, though it can help in certain instances.

That said, I have played A LOT of different iron sets over the last couple of years and almost anything Bridgestone has been consistently impressive in the feel department for me. Older MPs are good, but I don't see the hype, Titleist forgings are nice, but different, and Srixon is right up there with some of the best also. This all comes down to personal preference obviously but all the OEM seem to be stepping up their game in the feel dept.

Used to play Mizuno's. Then, I discovered Srixon Z745's. So good, I have two sets.

I’ve played so many I’m embarrassed to list them. My opinions:

Miura: Like hitting a wire brad with a framing hammer

Epon: Like the ball is melting into the face

Bstone/Srixon: A lot like Epon but not *quite* as soft

Kyoei: So pure it’s like hitting nothing when struck well

Titleist: a little clicky

Callaway true forgings: very pure just don’t like the brand a whole lot

Callaway irons with TPU and medallions: Too dampened

Ping I series: Too dampened

Mizuno true forgings: Pure, tremendous feedback, very crisp sounding at impact

Wilson FG Tour V6. Surprised I haven't seen them mentioned yet, but as far as more recent irons go, Wilson Staff FG Tour V6 is the definition of "butter." I bought a set last year (to my own surprise!). I had always wanted Mizunos because, you know, "Nothing feels like a Mizuno." But I tested every club they made as well as everything offered from Callaway, Titleist, Srixon, Bridgestone, etc. Every company made something very nice (the 2019 Callaway Apex Pros, Bridgestones, and the Srixon 785s in particular). But, the Wilson V6's were the best feeling and softest every time for me. Even when a salesman tried to remind me of the Mizuno tagline and assure me that the Mizuno metal was softer, my hands and ears would tell a different story. (Granted, this was with MB 18's and I have heard a Mizuno rep praise the feel of the new MB 20's over the 18's.) If you haven't tried the Wlson V6's and you're looking for butter on a stick, I would encourage you to look past your biases and give them a go.
