MAXFLI australian blades

Recommended Posts

i have been playing some maxfli australian blades for around the past 8 months.

although, i know very little about them. i understand they are a forged blade, most likely made from some type of steel? i don’t think they are a cast iron.

i am bewildered though as to why some of the clubs in the set seem to rust excessively and others don’t have any rust on them at all.

as far as i can see, i don’t think there has been a chrome finish added to these irons, maybe someone before me may have attempted a DIY job in order to remove something or maybe polish them, perhaps?

then again, they looked pure when i got them, with light surface rust on all clubs and no signs of grinder or polishing marks. i lightly removed the rust from all clubs and it only came back on some of them. i can not work out why. a couple are badly rusted and i hate the rust finish. its a terrible look and doesn’t suit my eye.

i hate the ‘raw’ look and want to move to a satin chrome or white satin finish, as seen on irons such as mizuno 900 jpx tour, miura mb001, or even the titleist 718 mb’s, for example.

is this something that is achievable through barrel polishing and sandblasting or does it take some kind of paint to achieve this look. i understand the mizuno’s may be a sandblasted chrome finish but the other two just look as though they’ve been through an extensive polishing process. it does state this on the miura website. will a finish like this prevent rust or will rust still show through no matter what? i feel as though it’s some kind of stainless steel, which i would have thought shouldn’t rust.

long winded and probably confusing, my apologies. i’m trying to give everyone a decent understanding of what i’m working with.

thankyou in advance!

Pics? They made several versions of the Australian blade. The set I had was a satin finish, not real durable though if I recall. Most finishes weren’t though other than hard chrome back in the 80’-90’s when they were made. As far as refinishing them, there are a lot of options out there but the cost can get steep.

I would move your post out of JDM and to the equipment forum too. You’ll get more response.

I found a set of Aussie blades on the pile at work 2 thru PW missing the 9 iron. According to Ironfinder they are 2000 2001 vintage. Now someone outside of WRX told me those may well be Miura forged or Kyoei forged. I know they hit as soft with the R-300 shafts as my old KZGs which I know to be Kyoei forged. I had not given it any thought until now

I didn't know they were still making an Aussie Blade in 2000, so I did some digging around and found a post by Tad Moore on the subject. Not sure if the irons pictured at the top of the thread linked are the same as yours, but if so, they are cast:

I'd really like to try the Maxfli Revolutions, which were also cast, because I've heard so much about their softness.

Thanks for posting that blast from the past--- I had even commented in that thread though I did not remember. WOW so those are cast! Never would have thought it. And like everyone else said they are SOFT!

Another post. [History of Australian Blades](https://forums.golfwrx.com/discussion/170737/the-history-of-australian-blades "History of Australian Blades"). (See post #4 by Parmaster for a timeline).

A few years back, thrifted a set (3 - PW) of AB's. Marvelous looking irons. Very svelte. A top line so thin, one could shave with it. Couldn't hit them worth a lick. TTDG S300 IIRC. Way out of my lane for playability. Sold them off for a tidy ROI. These were the '81 - '83 version:

@No_Catchy_Nickname. The Maxfli Revolution (Black '00 - '01) and the A10 Tour Limited ('02 - '03) were cast from a nickel chrome metal that allegedly made them feel softer than the typical. Found a couple of A10's some time ago. Swatted them at the range with range balls. They did seem to feel a bit softer than the typical cast club. FWIW. Either would be a worthy acquisition to inventory. At the right price. They seem to have acquired something of a "cult" status based on my perusal on the matter.
