G410 irons...took the leap

Recommended Posts

I'm currently looking at the G410s to replace my beloved G25s, but I made the mistake of having a go with some 2017 P790 which I can get for similar money. Has anyone here tried the two side by side previously? I'm trying them both Saturday but wanted to see what others thought.

I am aware the I500 is probably a better comparison to the P790, but they're far more money!

I tried the 790's when I got fitted for my 410's. They are a very nice iron and I'm sure I could have been happy with that choice also. The reason I picked the Pings is my numbers were more consistent with them than the 790's. Feel was softer with the TM's but dispersion was better with the 410's. Lots of fans of the P790's here so I doubt you could go wrong either way. I'm not the biggest Taylormade fan so that played into it also.

Former g25 player here. I went with p790 and the modus 105 shafts were a poor fit for me. I simply could not feel the club at all. I moved them and wound up with g410’s. Although I hadn’t sold my g25’s yet, I’ve not hit them since I put g410 in the bag.

i have zero doubt that the p790 would have worked with a better fit. That stated, very happy with g410’s.

Well I had my fitting and I hit the g410 further than the p790 and straighter. So add that to the p790 being £150 more and it was an easy choice. 4-uw on their way to me for next weekend. Was shocked how easy to hit they were with a much nicer appearance. Third set of pings running!

Loving this price drop by Ping. Last year I played G410 and HMP's. Definitely want to commit to one set by Jan 1, so I can focus on my game and get comfortable. I certainly need to change the shafts in my G410. Alta is just too light weight for me and I swing more consistently with the extra heft of steel.

I'm murdering these things . Have a pretty reliable LM I use and I had an 8 iron read as 184 carry 200 total LOL. I know they are strong lofted but hot damn.

They sound/ feel pretty meh as I've mentioned earlier, especially coming from forged clubs. But they are just really easy to hit.

I’m carrying the 7 iron 165 and it’s 2 degrees C here (I’m not a long hitter compared to many on here). They’re so forgiving too - a bad hit with the g410 7 carried as far as a good hit with my g25 7 iron. They look fantastic too which is a bonus.

Anyone thinking of changing from the awesome g25s try these. Last year I didn’t hit the g400 any further or straighter but these clubs are fantastic. The sound wasn’t as bad as reviews make out either.

I hit the Apex, P790, and i500...I went with the i500 as I was pleased with the performance and feel. I also loved the looks, which gave me more confidence.

Easy to hit but a hybrid is still a lot easier to elevate with a comparable shaft. Not that the G's are low launching they just aren't hybrids

Yep, same here. Put the 4 iron in the closet and use the 410 4 hybrid. With a nice easy swing I can hit 210 and if I want to lean on it 220-230. Far more consistent and accurate than the 4 iron.

Are there any single digit guys playing a set of these or comboing them in the long irons? I'm currently in the s55's and would be interested in switching into something more forgiving, but I'm concerned these may be too hot, especially with the lower lofts. I wish they offered a retro loft option in these.

I have the same concern with this type of iron, too big of a gap in the shorter irons. Have never really given this type iron much time but with work/kids my golf time is limited and like the idea of the extra forgiveness.

I personally wouldn't get too hung up on short iron gapping. Let's say you have a shot in between your PW and UW, which could happen no matter what your loft gaps are. I would just choke down a bit on the PW, and hit a full shot. Not something really exclusive to the G410's for that matter. JMHO.

I do find I have a tad bigger gap than my Apex pros did. The difference between the 7 and 8 is particularly noticeable though ironically that gap is 4.5 degrees and not 5 like the 8-9-PW

I can hit my 7 iron 180+ if I really nut it, and my 8 maxes out at around 165 but it's rare I'll hit it that far. So if I have like 171 to a pin it's a really interesting club selection. I think its because for whatever reason I launch a 34.5 degree head much higher proportionally than a 30 degree head. My 7 iron I hit low and penetrating

It's not a huge deal, take a little off a 7 or play to where the better miss is

Until one becomes, or already is, a really big hitter, one generally thinks in terms of 10 yards between clubs.

The manufacturers know this. The do all the research. Especially in the targeted golfer for the G410, generally speaking a mid 'cappers club. Yet Ping has .5 degree gaps between some of the clubs. 4.5* ? Why not 5* ? Or 4* ? There MUST be a reason, no ? Add to that there has ALWAYS been lesser gaps in the longer irons than the shorter anyway. And most golfers still "think" their 3 irons goes 190 and their 4 goes 180,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Personally I don't consider being between clubs a real "feel" shot. Yardages inside of my most lofted (60*) club ? That is a feel shot to ME. In between clubs ? Not so much.

I hit a flushed 7 iron 152. Problem is, I don't flush it nearly as often as I'd like. LOL So suppose I've got 147. Between the wind, my crappy swing, and my inconsistent contact, I'm not good enough to be able to (reliably) "take something off" that 7 iron to get to 147. What I will do is tell myself "Smooth" before taking the swing. If I get the flushed 152, I've got a 15 foot putt. I can live with that. LOL

See above. I wouldn't worry about manufacturer's stock gaps until one becomes EXTREMELY proficient. As above, I agree with not getting hung up on stock iron gapping. But let me ask you - how many inches does one choke down (or up LOL) and still take a full swing to take off say, 5 yards ?

I pretty much agree on taking the full shot though. As I mentioned above, taking off 1/2 a club and hitting it the full distance leaves me a 15 footer. While I'd like to be closer, I wouldn't be all that disappointed with a 15 footer from about 115 or so.

Now wedge gapping, say Gap wedges through Lob wedge ? Now those gaps I really pay attention to as that zone, more than any other, is the scoring zone. But that's another thread,,,,,,,,,,,,

Hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday.

I did have a set of 410's for a minute but immediately dismissed them due to the gaps I was seeing. Almost 20-25 yards from club to club all the way up to the 5 iron were I started to see my normal 12-15 yard gaps. I'm a fairly long player, have always played a bladed iron of some sort since I started playing seriously about 12 years ago. Now with a young family at home I dont have the time to keep my game "blade ready" In my mind if I'm not playing blades I'm going to play the most forgiving clubs I can stand to look at. G410 fits the bill but the gaps are tough for me and trying to finesse an in between yardage with very little practice time probably isnt going to go well.

Ive looked at tweaking the lofts to tighten up the gaps but dont know if I want to get that involved in what will probably end up being an expensive experiment.

Well, I decided to go in on a set of these. I've been struggling with my game for a while now, and decided to try to make it a bit easier. Picked up 4-u orange dot with stock AWT regular (which may or may not stay). It's quite a departure from what I have traditionally played, but, after spending a couple of days hitting these in the fitting bay, I couldn't ignore how effortless these are to hit.

I have always been a bit of a forged iron snob, and feel is high on my list of iron traits. These sounded HORRIBLE during my fitting. Just a loud, ear-splitting CRACK!!! I convinced myself to ignore it and I'm glad I did. These felt and sounded fantastic on the course. Really soft and muted unless you really miss one. I also have a set of 718MBs and had been playing i210s, and truly prefer the sound of these up until about the 5 and 4 irons, which both tend the be a little louder than I tend to like.

High trajectory is the norm, but I was able to move the ball both ways at will. I did not get the distance gains I expected, but I tend to think that is due to the AWT shaft, which is a bit soft for my swing speed. I'm going to keep them in for a bit, but already have a set of Modus 120 and modus 105 in stiff flex that might be a much better fit.

They were definitely fun to play. I'm looking forward to getting out again.
