M3 vs M5 Pro stat anomaly why???

Ok was bored, golf in Indiana is done for year and I started researching for a new driver and I started looking at driver distance of the pros that used M5’s and then I went back a year and looked at the same pros that used both m5 and m3 (thanks pga.com for the stats) and almost all of them lost yardage switching from M3 to M5! Usually around 5 yards. My question is why? and did any of you notice the same thing?

I went m4 to m5. I saw slower ballspeeds with m5 but m5 was longer because I was able to get into a higher lofted head and lower spin.

 

M4 was 8.5

M5 is 10.5

M5 spins lower and dispersion is better.

I tested both M3 and M5 against each other this year for a solid month and multiple ranges sessions. In the end the M3 won out. I just preferred it visually and audibly. I'm not sure performance was any less with M5 but it also seemed like M3 was better on dispersion for me. In the end I could have gamed M5 but I didn't see that it was doing anything better for me than the M3 was.

But why would anyone give up yardage especially the pros I wouldn’t think dispersion would be a issue for them compared to us mere mortals

Most of the pros are paid money to play the newest stuff. They have to change. Watch Rory. Best driver of the ball on the planet. Come January, he will have a new driver in the bag

I also bought and compared the M5 driver head vs my current M3 driver, same loft. I agree the M3 head had a better sound, feel and consistency over the M5. I sold the M5 after 3 range sessions and 2 rounds. It’s possible the loft, CG and head weights were not identical between heads even with the same loft stamp.

With that said, I’m sure touring pros do not switch to newer versions without extensive testing to match or improve their outputs.

M5 ball speeds were slightly lower but with lower spin and more forgiveness the m5 usually won out for people. Those stats have a number of variables but generally you can deduce that conclusion.

Funny thing.....I'm putting a M3 back in the bag....used all of 2018 and hit the new crop of drivers with epic flash sz winning out on the monitor.....on course i found it louder and lower launching/ spin than I need......jpx900 is a very steady driver for me but just a bit too high of spin ....M5 , I need more loft and didn't like the sound.....even tried G410LST with mixed results.

So back to my comfort/ consistent zone with a head that looks and feel great and has the proper amount of spin for the window I want.

They launched similarly, but off center strikes felt more solid and had less curvature with the M3. It was disappointing that the M5 didn’t outperform.

For my game the M3 9.5* one click up was higher in same shaft as 10.5* M5.....I think the lower spin is something I don't need!

I was in a 12* sldr, 10.5 R15, 10.5 M1 original and 17....also the toe seems to be hotter/ better for me with M3 ....also M3 isn't as weight forward in design

Did you compare course for course or just an average?

course and course conditions will vary from year to year. Compare their stats on same course at same time of year.

Looking at mcilroy...

 

2018 sg off the tee was .761

2019 ag off the tee 1.1 and change

Driving distance was mostly unchanged

2018 accuracy was 55%

2019 accuracy was 61%

I’ve had 3 different M series drivers over the years and I’ve never driven the ball as consistently as I have this year with the M5. It’s not really even close.... this head keeps the ball in play. I’ve played less rounds this year than in previous years with other drivers, so it’s not a case of just playing better because I’m playing more. I do NOT think this is the longest/hottest driver I’ve owned (that goes to the SLDR white I had with a tour Fuji 757 shaft in it), but it is a super reliable weapon that I’m more confident in than any other driver I’ve owned.

I'm right there with you. Really accurate driver. But the slower ballspeeds compared to other stuff out there is always in the back of my mind. TM may get me with the SIM if ballspeeds are higher and it's as good on dispersion as m5.

I'm with those that have sided with the M5. Went from the M1 to the M3, then back to the M1, then recently picked up the m5 tour model (in true golfwrx-form). Didn't think that I would ever take the M1 out of the bag, but was really hitting the M5 well. The feeling off the face felt similar to what I used to feel in Titleist drivers, and you know when something feels right. Never had the love affair with the M3, just wanted to try out the new twist face tech, but quickly went back to the M1.

Speaking of which, anyone in the market for a M3 in 8.5*??? ;)

I just bought a M3. Hope to gain ball speed over my M1.

I was able to compare m3 to m5...

M3 had slightly more ballspeed on center/optimal.strikes.

M5 was a touch slower but was consistently around the same number.

M3 spin fluctuated much more than m5. Hit a couple with me that spun up around 3100. Lowest spin shot was 1900. M5 spin numbers were also really consistent. I believe highest was around 2550 and lowest was right around 2000.

What I've been able to summarize on m5 is that TM got off center strikes to be really, really close to the same performance as center strikes. It seems tho that they had to sacrifice sweet spot speed to do that.

 

Thus why I'm really intrigued with SIM.
