Mizuno MP20 SEL first impressions

Kgglonghorn

Recommended Posts

Just put my new MP 20SEL's to the test on the Flightscope. My gamers for the past two years have been the Callaway MB18's. The Callaway irons have been workhorses and have not been dethroned by any contenders...until now. The MP20's are like butter with an extra dollup of cream. If you have read any of my posts, you know I have tried them all, including MP 68's, 690MBs, Vapor Pro's, TP 9's, and two sets of Muira blades. These Mizunos are absolute sweetness AND I have picked up (on average) 2-4 mph of ball speed. Iron spin numbers are up marginally, dispersion is actually tighter and the feel is OUT OF THIS WORLD. I know these irons are not for everybody, but for you purists out there that have been thinking about these, I could not be happier. I got them fitted with Nippon Modus NS Pro 120 stiff shafts. It is like the shafts were made for these heads (or vice versa). Just wanted to share a favorable review since most people are so quick to slam muscle back irons.

I’m going to be the minority but I’ll just say it. I like the short irons but honestly wish they made the set more of a combo set. Great irons and appreciate Mizuno finally getting off the sh***er with lefties

Thanks for the info - OP. I went to Golf Galaxy last week intending to hit the blueprints vs the mp 20 SELs and of course they didn’t have the blueprints in LH..... I liked the mp 20s a lot! I left fully intending to order the SELs but I’d really like to try the blueprints before pulling the trigger. I’d love to know how you guys feel those two sets compare! I’m more interested in the perceived difference in feel and forgiveness.

I ADORE my MP 20s SEL!!! Just today I shot my best score this year with a 1 over, 73. The big difference today was definitely my iron consistency. Was getting very close on most iron shots with many may birdie opportunities that lead to boring pars at worst. Whenever I change clubs again, Im not trading these babies in, thats for sure.

How are you liking the HMB? Even though I don't mind the topline, there's something weird looking about the toe to me. I just bought another 718 T-MB 4i to play with my MP20 blades. I like the idea of going 3 and 4 HMB though. I also must say that I love that Mizuno has done this for the lefties. Living in Canada, nearly all of my friends play leftie because they're all hockey players.

I completely agree with you. I hit them against my '19 Apex Pros and could not tell a noticeable difference in dispersion. To be honest, the SELs may have been a touch tighter. But the feel...… the feel was out of this world! And I thought the Pros felt amazing, but these are on another level. I do wish I was able to test them through the turf, but I know my Pros well enough to gauge how the SELs would feel comparatively.

Now I just have to convince the wife why I need to sell my Pros to get the SELs with PX 7.0 shafts!

Glad you asked. I initially thought the 3 and 4 HMBs were not a good match but after 7 rounds in, I'm really loving the easy to hit long irons, they fly high and straight, just what we all need in long irons. I never felt more confident standing over the ball with long irons more than now. Now I feel I must hit the green with them, like it was a 7-8 iron. Huge confidence boost for sure. and the transition to the 5 iron is SUPER smooth, and fortunately I also dont grasp any huge different in feel either. Mizuno killed it this year with the MP-20s and finally us lefties can rejoice on Mizuno Blades Goodness.

These were extremely spinny for me (8,000 on 7i) and there are more of these sets for sale than anything else I have seen in a long time which isn’t a good thing imo.

I've also come from Apex MB 4-P w/Modus 130X to the MP20s w/$-Taper 130X. Picked up some ballspeed, efficiency and flatter flight. Loved the updated shape so much I added the T20 w/Modus Wedge 125. Can't positively say that one is better than the other, but the game seems easier and they feel like a Mizuno. I'm waiting to pick up my HMB 4i this weekend, but hopeful that it fits that slot between my hybrid and irons. I like the UT utility, but want something more like an iron flight. Going to have a few rounds of Mizuno vs Callaway/Ping over Christmas to settle on my gamer bag for 2020. Either way, I think I'm not going to be disappointed!

Both great irons. Softest around. Have you been on monitor with them? I noticed a high flight but they didn’t excessively spin for me. Had a couple on course experiences with ripping the ball back but the greens were super receptive. I got extremely consistent numbers and ball flights during my fitting.

I'd love to try them but I have no use at all for the 3,4, and 5 iron. Am I right that the only way these are sold is a complete set?

Closest I could get was 5-PW on TGW. I'll have to check it out at my local store where I usually get everything.

100% agree with your thoughts. Wish the LH option offered HMB in the 5 iron at least, and possibly the 6.

I'm with you on this. I have never had an issue with the 5 iron, but I think it would be nice to have the option. Since we're both lefties, Hawk fans, and I'm assuming you live in Iowa, you should just buy the set in my specs and let me play a few rounds with them to see if I like them. Sounds like a great idea from my perspective!

Central Wisconsin resident, actually. Dad grew up near Cedar Rapids. Was in Kinnick to watch the win against Minnesota a few weeks ago.

I'm reasonably 113% sure my wife would tear out my liver if I presented your suggestion to her.

No need to tell the wife.......... after all, we're all GolfWRX'ers and need to have a mechanism in place to hide golf purchases. I used to do that but quickly gave up on it and my wife has just learned to live with it. Too bad we (Iowa) had that slump of atrocious play in the middle of the season against Michigan and Wisconsin, another year of what could have been.......

If you change your mind and decide to buy/lend me a set of MP 20 SEL's, let me know. In the meantime - Go Hawks!

Well, as of today I cannot bash Mizuno anymore. Being a lefty , Mizuno has always ticked me off because of their terrible offering of equipment for us. I went and hit the MP20SEL's today and color me impressed. What a fantastic feeling iron! I go in for my fitting next Thursday and will be placing my order for 6-PW. C'mon January thaw!! If nothing else I can just sit and stare at them. Oh, just my opinion but if you have any kind of a repetitive swing at all you can game these things.

I have to agree with you. I was shocked by how forgiving these things are. I’m a pretty solid ball striker but I hit one off the toe and don’t feel like I lost anything That I wouldn’t have also lost with my current gamers. I didn’t get a chance to compare side by side but based on the strike location it was very comparable to what I have experienced with my gamers.

I hit the MP20 SEL and Blueprint side by side with SF 95 stiff both were 6 irons and the SEL's are marginally more forgiving. This was during a fitting so I wasn't allowed to hit a bucket with each or anything. Both felt great with that shaft. I think BP's were 5 yards off and another 5 on mishits. BP's looked smaller to my eye too. YMMV...

  • 2 weeks later...

I just played my first actual round with the MP20's...all I can say is WOW. SO tight and pure feeling. Been hitting them on the range but today they earned their spot in the bag. Played in 55 degree weather with 15 mph sustained wind and the clubs flat out delivered and felt amazing doing so.

Thanks for sharing. This thread seemed to fall off a cliff but I’m still interested in everyone’s experiences. How did you feel the HMBs worked into the set? What were your impressions as far as forgiveness? (Yes all future readers - its a blade and blah blah blah.) They seemed very friendly on misses when I last hit them and I didn’t feel I was swinging particularly well that day. Thanks again!
