Glenn Mills

Even though the school has been closed, the course is still going strong. Was SUPPOSED to play there Saturday, November 2nd. Got a call November 1st saying that the course was closed due to storms and wouldn't be open through the weekend. I thought that it was a few trees, maybe flooded in areas from a storm that rolled through on Halloween...Holy Smokes! Just got an email today stating the course would be open today!!!!!

Here's a link to a drone flyover...lots of damage

I have a buddy that lives up there and said it was bad, didnt think it was THAT bad... I'll be honest, I played there about 5 years ago, never before and never since, so I'm not sure but it does kinda look like it.

My folks' house borders the course. That tornado missed their home by about 30 feet (it's amazing how much destruction those things can do, but how they can be that close and essentially spare you if you're not a direct hit). Many houses on their street are in very bad shape. Of course, this is still a Pennsylvania tornado and can't compare to what those folks in the middle of the country experience - but still very scary.

Candidly, I always felt that Glen Mills could stand to lose some trees. Not sure this is the way I wanted it to happen, though. I hope to play over Christmas break if it's not too cold when we go down to visit the rents. I'll report back

Used to play there regularly and was surprised to hear about the tornado. Drone footage is crazy. The course is what it is - there are about 9-10 solid holes, 4-5 kind of ok holes and 2-3 horrible holes (#6, #11 and #17 are just awful). Otherwise it's a decent course. Value/ranking doesn't add up though.

I think the lure of Mills is the fact that its public golf with private (or near private) conditions in a region that has very limited options for that. I always like playing mills simply because its in good shape and priced fair (plenty of rates below $100 depending on tee time)... $60 early in the season. Lots of terrain change, and options to play many holes differently.

IMO Mills is BY FAR the best public course in the Philly area, maybe with the exception of Atlantic City CC. Closer to Philly, nothing comes close, other than MAYBE Broad Run.

Agreed... it does have some quirks, and like a previous post said, 11 is a silly hole, but they grow on you. Being forced to put the driver in the bag off the tee on a couple holes is very "NE old-school golf" in my opinion.

Yeah, 11 isn't "the quirky" hole I'd use as a primary example. 8's green is pretty silly, so I'd start there, personally.

11 is just really, really narrow toward the green, and it's tough to see all of the fairway you have to work with for your tee shot.

Once you get past the awkward (by design, I'm sure) visuals of some of the holes, it's tough to knock much about the course. I've always enjoyed playing GM.

Yeah there are some nutty greens and some holes that look like they were "forced" into an area, but overall for the 1 time I played it, its a course I always want to go back to. Problem is, i dont have enough guys that would want to shell out that coin for that course (crazy b/c they will drop the same amount for Scotland Run or somewhere similar).

It went downhill for a while. They started offering a 2 for $99 special during prime time so that brought every yahoo out of the woodwork (i dont mind people that have never played or dont play well, just have some etiquette and an understanding of the game (replacing divots, raking traps, fixing ball marks and keeping up with pace of play) and the course suffered. Then they had some disease/ fungus infect the greens so it was bad for a while. They removed a TON of trees on the front 9 (to increase airflow and pace of play), looks like a different course. Its coming back now.

charli-- Take a good look at sabram's course pics. I play GM once (maybe twice) a year, and each time I still have to wrap my head around where the bunkers and fairways are positioned on some of the holes' tee shots. Half the tee shots are visually deceptive, and it's not clear if the bunker you're seeing out there is on the inside or outside of the dogleg, for instance. #s 2, 3, and 11 especially are this way, I think (you should probably only hit an iron from the tee on #11, for instance -- but there's much more fairway out there than it appears from the tee).

Otherwise, I think you could easily hit some tee shots to completely the wrong spot (like on #3, you can be OB left in a hurry if you don't understand where the fairway doglegs; or you could put it unnecessarily right and leave yourself a tough, long approach from the rough).

But whatever you do, have a fun, good round!

Yeah man. Hopefully you have a range-finder and can shoot things you see and determine where there's room in between (that you otherwise can't see). For instance, if you look at the various pics of #2, you might think that you've got to put your tee shot out to the right at the radio tower. But if you shoot the distance to the far side of the bunker directly above the red tee markers, you'll likely find that you can clear that trap -- and there's a decent amount of fairway there that snakes back to in front of the green. You can see that fairway in the 2nd pic of #2, but not necessarily in the first pic/from the tee...

I hope you'll post after you play and let us know what you thought of it.

Good luck!

So what you said was very true. Great course shot well especially for the greens being frozen solid. Definitely a wild ride though. Thought it was going to be more of an open course then came the woods. 11 is brutal! Thinnest fairway I’ve ever played. Great course but the range is still messed up from the tornado. But man can’t wait to play it again.
