Bag a 5W or a 3H

For the hybrid players, my new hybrid gets me the numbers I want most of the time. However, I have a very fast tempo so sometimes if I swing that way with the hybrid it’s hook city. Anyone else have to alter their swing for that one club?

I feel like I have to just swing slow to get it to work. It works when I do, but I wish I didn’t have to alter anything in my swing to do so.

I use a Atmos Blue 80 TS, which gives me the launch and spin I want. Most of the time the club flies high with a baby draw at the very apex of the ball flight.

I found the same with a hybrid. Swinging slower mentally for me with the hybrid especially on windy days was disastrous for me. I found that shortening the shaft and changing the loft settings helped with overcooking the 5W. I can swing as hard as I want with it and seems to go bullet straight.

I'm going to split the difference and go with a Callaway Super Hybrid in the 19°-22° range to fit between my 15° fairway wood and 22° driving iron.

You really have to look at that spot in the bag and know (through good record keeping) exactly what job(s) you are asking it to do most often, and most effectively. For instance, I moved to a DI in that spot in the bag because I knew through my stat keeping that I hit that yardage club 3x more often off the tee than off the turf and I knew that I liked looking down at an iron vs. a hybrid/wood for comfort off the tee and I knew I possessed the clubhead speed to play that club effectively. Now, after a solid year of stat keeping, I can tell you that I am just as "effective" off the tee with my fairway wood vs. my driving iron (strokes gained-wise), so there actually isn't a comfort factor looking down at an iron shaped head and it doesn't actually "help" me. I also can look at my SG approach and see that I lose far more strokes hitting approach shots with my driving iron than with my fairway wood, so again, the driving iron isn't that effective for me as an "off the turf" club.

Enter the Super Hybrid. It's shorter and heavier, two things I prefer as a rule. It's also low spinning and forgiving, also two things that I'd like at this spot in the bag. Hopefully, it is the best compromise, or "hybrid," of all of the things that I need. I'll let you know after I have some good data!

I went with the 5 wood option. I find it easier to control the height of my shots. With my current 3H....I have a tough time trying to hit mid, piercing trajectory.

I've use a 3h, have used a TMB 2i, UDI 2, P790 3 iron and a 5 wood, all w graphite shafts. My heart wants the irons. My brain says hybrid. The 5 wood was the best from the fairway. High straight, but could balloon. Hybrid was most versatile. Rough, fairway, low and high flights, shape both directions

Both! I've got a 5W set at 17* and a 3H set at 20*. In my hands a 5W and 3H do not go the same distance so are not redundant.

Hit both for a while & see if there's enough overlap to dump one of them.

Personally I don't hit my woods all that well from tight lies and can hit my hybrid from almost any situation from tee to green. That functionality alone made me dump the wood for another, lower lofted, hybrid.

I was doing a 5w/4w experiment last 6 months and I'm dumping it, going back to a 3w for the tee box and a 3h for par 5's

For those guys that are saying hybrid over 5W.....Do you usually hit your 3W well? Ive never got along with hybrids but hit my woods well hence the 5W

I strike 3 woods and 5 woods very well, long and relatively straight. But, I am interested in hybrids on the chance that they may provide more precisely accurate shots than fairway woods.

Prefer the higher launch of a 5-wood. I have a Rocketballz Stage 2 21° and a SLDR S 19°. Got these after it turned too cold to play.

This thread has really opened my eyes. I'm very fascinated with the sexwood idea. I only use my 3W maybe once a round. I initially wanted it for off the tee when I needed to lay back off the driver, but as the summer progressed I found myself reaching for my more predicable hybrid. I would only hit that 3W off the deck on a perfect lie, pretty much making it useless most of the time. I previously had a 5W but the distance between that and my hybrid were marginal and again, never used the 5W as a result. I'm wondering if I'd like a 3 wood head in a shorter shaft that would still give me some confidence off the deck and more length than my hybrid. It would be nice to know that from 240-260 out, I'd at least have confidence to go for it. Right now, unless it's a perfect lie for my 3W, I always lay up.

I found the 5W ball flight too high, and ballooning into the wind, so am swapping it out for a 2H for next season. I'm hoping to use it off the tee on shorter holes, and 2nd shots into par 5's.

These. They never sold them retail. They were tour issue. But they can be found on ebay from time to time. I got these when Adams was still in business. They were in Plano and I live in Frisco. I went to a fitting and didn't know they existed until they showed them to me. It's a peanut version of the Super LS. Smaller head design. Titanium face. Anti-hook and frankly forgiving for their size and I'd say they are above average in distance compared to the current hybrids. Mid trajectory. I got the 18* bent to 17 and the 3 is 20*. The regular Super LS was also awesome. I have a 17* in that as well that I swap in if I'm going to a course where I'll be using a hybrid off the tee on several holes. It's right between hybrid and fairway wood size so it's very forgiving. Truthfully no one could convince me anyone's been able to make a better hybrid since. LSP or LS. Trust me I've tried a few and not only can they not kick the Adams out of the bag they simply aren't as good. At the time they made these, Adams was by far the leader in hybrid technology and I feel like the technology hasn't changed at all since then. I mean TM bought them simply to take the slot technology and not get sued. And years later their hybrids still aren't as good as these Adams.
