What's your miss? The MP20 MB/MMC is great, 919 Tour, the AP2/T100/CB/MB are all good, Srixon 785 got along well with me even though I don't take pelts, and I'd throw the 760 in there even though I haven't tried it just because TXG says they've had a lot of success with it for shallow guys.

I need a iron that I can work the ball two ways with ease. I am -4 path face +2 AOA of -1 with 7iron. Low spin....

With +2 AoA on an iron you will always be low spin ad low launch due to hitting closer to the equator of the ball. You want to look for something that has a thin sole and a pre-worn leading edge so if you do hit behind it a hair it won't dig, but it will also allow you to move the strike more downward. At -4 you could use something mid weight (obv. depends on speed for what "mid weight" means for you). Look at P760, 785, i500, Apex Pro, MMC.

I would think that a thinner sole would be best if your a picker. Since you will have a greater chance to interact with turf as your club approaches the ball the less sole the better. I would also think that less bounce than more could be to your favor as well.

Now if your a higher handicapper than thin sole might not be the best.

I'm assuming if you are looking for players irons that you have a moderately low handicap and you hit the ball well. If that is the case the sole width isn't really much of a factor other than being a small factor on mis-hits.

A proper iron shot is ball then ground - as you know - so the ball is long gone by time the sole of the iron makes contact. A pro could play any sole width or bounce on an iron and their contact would be mainly unchanged.

A wider sole, higher bounce iron is a little more forgiving on shots hit slightly fat.

I'm a picker, and switched to the JPX-900 forged this season. It has helped my ball striking tremendously!!! I had the Diablo Forged before them and loved them, but did not realize how much thicker the sole was until I made the switch, the thinner sole has definitely been worth it. Took a few rounds to figure out how they played out of the rough, but after that it didn't bother me much.

I also switched to the JPX900 forged this fall and struck them extremely well in the few times I got to take them out at the end of the season, and I rarely take a divot. I'm hoping these will be with me long-term.

Can anyone tell me how much a difference there is in regards the sole width on the JPX 900's Forge vs the JPX 919 Hot Metal Pro irons

I'm presently playing the JPX 919 Hot Metal Pro's & find that I have a tendency to hit these fat so I want to take a look at the JPX 900's Forged but can't find any to compare

Thanks

Very curious about this topic, I have always tended to take small to no divots my whole life. I literally have played whatever version of AP2 was current for the last 10 years, until this year when I wanted to shake it up. Tried to love the T200 as that would have been a natural choice but fell in love with the P790. Played them for the end of summer and fall and have noticed the obvious distance increase, and hit some really good mid and long irons. The short irons have been problematic for some reason and this topic kind of explains to me, the soles are just so wide. I know if you read enough about P790 you will see game improvement references and it must be due to the sole, as I find the top line find. Before really looking at then I always thought they were similar to the TMB, but in reality they are very inflated. This topic has me thinking going back to a familiar players iron shape might be best for me, as I do not want to combo the P760 in I don’t think. I learned through experience that soles on wedges make all rhb
