Oldest set you have played lately.

I still have my MP 30s and still seem to play my best golf with them. Only sticks I've shot under par with and have tried all those GI clubs, which never improved my game a single bit.

Currently play MP 57s with an eye on the new MP 20s.

Thinking about a combo of blades and MMCs.

I've got a buddy who just picked up a set of TN-87s. I can't wait to try those suckers. I've personally get a set of J33 combos in the garage I gamed a couple weeks ago. Nothing special.

One of the things you find out on WRX is that for any club, no matter how bad you think it was, there is someone out there playing tremendous golf with it/them.

 

I wanted to like the MP-30s so bad. They look great, plus it's Mizuno. How could one go wrong?

 

Yet, like many players, I found out there was a reason that I could pick up a used set of MP-30s for less than $200 - when every other model of MP iron was going at $500+ at the time.

 

While I have run into several MP-30 devotees over the years, the general consensus on that iron was: insanely difficult to hit, and about a club shorter than anything else out there. My experience matched that assessment.

Had a short stint with some Bridgestone J36's. Picked them up because I demo'ed an iron with a Project X Flighted shaft and thought I liked it a lot but turns out they weren't great for me in a full set.

I play with my Palmer The Standard forged irons. Circa 1983. Only irons I own.

I traded my Palmer standards in for the first series of Tommy Armour 845's as shown in the picture. The woods are Joe Powell (now deceased). He also made woods for Sounder, which Arnold played. I wish I kept the Standards rather than trade. Almost pulled the trigger on some Standards on eBay earlier this year.

I don't disagree that it's not a forgiving club at all. I think I just got used to it and made it work.

Now when I hit the new MB 20, it seems actually pretty easy to hit.

I can say that when I'm grooving my swing, the old MP 30 feels sweet .

MacGregor Colokrom M85. Just reshafted and regripped them with KBS Tours and Tour Velvet Cords.

Oh yeah, I can't argue with the feel of the MP30 on solid strikes. Every time I hit one, I felt like I was on tour. Then, of course, the ball would end up about 20 yards short of where I thought it should.

Nothing that old but I dusted off my Adams CMB Irons and played a couple of rounds with them. They performed really well so will remain my back up set. So bummed that Adams went out of business

Wonder if that's a shaft thing for you in your 30s. Mine are only about 3-5 yards shorts than my old 900F and are longer than my current MP 57s.

Golden Ram Tour Grinds, don’t know what year they are. They don’t look nearly as good as the pick on the front page article though.

If they're stamped Frequency Matched, they're from 87-91. If they're Frequency Matched and TW276 or TW282, they're 1992. If they're Vibration Matched, 83-86. If they just say Tour Grind on the back near the toe, they're from 80-82. If it's Golden Ram in an oval on the muscle, they're from the mid to late 70s.

1999 Hogan Apex irons. To this day nothing feels like these. Ever strike a big bass drum right in the sweet spot? there you go.

Yeah, it wasn't the shafts. And as I said in my original post, I know that some people have had wonderful experiences with the MP30s. For me, they sucked giant hairy balls. Simple fact.

 

You can argue with me all day long about your wonderful results with the MP30s, and I'm happy for you, but it isn't going to change my experience.

A few times this year I took out my late 90's model MacGregor Forged PCB Tours. Shaft and length aren't necessarily the perfect fit for me but they are beautiful to look at and amazing when well struck.

Also from time to time will play a set of '88 Hogan Apex Redlines that I picked up here a few years ago that were refinished at The Iron Factory. Still one of my favorite blade designs of all time.

The one that really just sits in the basement right now is a set of late 70's Hogan Apex II White Cameo's. Clubs appear to be at least 2-3* too flat for what I'd hit. I believe Apex Pro 4 shaft which I know is too much for me! But someday I'd like to retro-fit them more to my specs.

Spalding Tour Edition Ltd (1991), cold forged. Rebuilt the set with Wishon Stepless shafts. MOI matched with 3/8" length increments. Won the match play championships at my local muni with them. As long as the groves are still in good condition, a decent set of heads can be mated to your favourite shaft and live on.
