Loss in iron distance

Hi gang. Unfortunately, I’ve reached “senior” status and I knew I would eventually lose some distance in my game. But, I’m puzzled by the drastic amount of distance in a short time. I’ve lost 15-20 yds! The weird thing is that there has not been a loss with my driver. No change in my swing and I’m able to still make a full shoulder turn. Any thoughts or has anyone experienced the same?

You're probably just mishitting the ball. If you have no distance drop in driver (assuming this is verified by a LM and/or on course data and not a driving range) then the obvious answer is you aren't hitting the sweet spot with the irons anymore. It could be your swing, it could be the heads, it could be the shafts....anything.

Well, it’s either your clubs, your ball, or your swing. Since it’s not likely the first two, it’s very likely that there’s a change in your swing that you’re not aware of, such as strike timing. Particularly if your iron swing weight is higher than your driver, you’re probably just delivering the iron club heads a bit late, which is delofting them and dropping your spin rate. If you don’t have a super fast swing speed, the result will be a yardage loss such as you’re experiencing.

What shaft is in your driver and what shafts are in other clubs. Flex and weight can make a huge difference.

I have been going through something similar. I am aged 76 and have had some health problems over last couple of years. I am now getting back to meter health and hopefully better golf. I am opposite you in that I have 20 meters from driver but Pitching wedge much the same. However last round showed some improvement and I am hopeful that if I get the right setup then distances will not be so bad.

Yes maybe the shafts in your irons are not a good match. Tell is about your clubs: makes, models, shafts, flexes. How's far do you hit your driver when you get it just right?

You are likely not compressing the ball. Get a lesson to strike with your hands ahead.

I agree with @WristySwing . Could be a number of things from timing may be a shade off. Lack of compression. Drop in Hand speed. Ton of factors play in iron distance loss. I would go to a place that has a launch monitor and check some numbers club head speed, ball speed, angle of attack and face to path. If your still making a good turn then I'd say its a striking problem maybe try a golf ball thats a little easier to compress? And your never to old to work on your fitness

Agreed 100%. Any time I notice my iron distance dropping off, I go back to the drills I was taught in a lesson last year. I picked up about 10-15 yards or so per club just by getting my hands forward. We have a simulator with cameras all over the place and it was incredible the difference hand placement at contact made.

No idea where you live, but temperature has a big effect. Playing when the temp. is in the 40's is usually having to go up 2 clubs from what the distance was during the summer.

Good point. 40 degrees plus a little flipping and I'm hitting pw from 80 yds.

I lost some distance when I went to a new set of irons. However, I feel like I have better distance control.
