Titleist 905R Compared to Todays Offerings

Recommended Posts

I came across a 905R with a upgraded Fuji Rombax shaft. Club looks same as new. As any true golfwrxer, its hard to pass up a great deal on what was once a top of the line driver. Weather is iffy here now and just wanted to ask, how does this head compare to newer clubs. With head size being maxed out and I know shafts now are better, is there a lot of difference in todays heads. I guess I need to find a way to hit it. Thanks.

I have a 9.5* with the stock Speeder S flex and it carries just as far as any of my modern drivers with my stock draw. Forgiveness is a bit less though. enough to notice. Also, if you tend to like to work the ball left & right, the adjustments needed are FAR LESS with the 905R. I have to practice with it for a week if I intend to play it and work the ball. Hitting my stock shot though, it's money all day.

Very generally speaking, the further back you go, the more you're losing on anything outside of perfect hits. It is all about averages really. Lower MOI and higher CG on older drivers will mean higher spin, bigger misses, and less overall distance on average. If you can make that perfect strike however then it will likely keep up with the best of them, but the likelihood of that is far less on average. However, golf is all about confidence and if it gives that then that is more powerful.

I disagree. I still have my 905R. I also still have my 975D. And now I have the TS3. It's not even close. Spin numbers in the low 2000s were very rare in those days. I spin my 905R in the 2800 range which was pretty good in those days. Now I admit I've never tried the 905 with a modern shaft so I guess it's possible. Although as the above poster said the forgiveness in the new drivers is substantially better so your average distance would be better on the current drivers regardless of what it does when middled.

Now don't get me wrong I loved that driver and played some great golf with it. And truthfully I can't say it would drastically affect my scores playing with it. It still goes back to the short game.

I just remembered a time this past summer I was paired up with a guy that had a 2017 M2, We had the same swing speed and in most holes my 905R kept up with his M2. But there was this one hole where I absolutely flushed it. It felt so good and my ball was a good 100 yards ahead of his. He couldn't believe it and I couldn't believe it. I wouldn't be able to recreate that shot since but still, I'm pretty confident it can keep it with the latest and greatest.

Man, this is a common subject of debate around here :) The answer is simple. Compared to a fit TS3 (I've compared every Titleist driver I've had to the 905 - 907, 910, 915 and now TS3), it just doesn't go as far and it definitely doesn't go as far on average. The 905 was surpassed in performance by the 915 for me. However, it was still longer than the 910 and lets not talk about the 907. The reason this question keeps coming up is because the difference between them is, in my experience, the smallest difference of any old 460 cc driver when compared to modern clubs. To be fair, my scores never go up with the 905 in the bag and a mint one is a great find and you should 100% scoop that bad boy up. It's hard to beat that look/sound.

1) the 905r is an outstanding club and can perform in the correct hands just as good as anything else.

2) Most people have said that it should have a higher spin rate, which “normally” is detrimental to distance (but not always).

3) If you can find a 905R in mint condition, buy it, play it, keep it, and enjoy the fun of one of the best drivers.

Exactly. Too much spin. I had the 975D and skpped the 983 line. Then I bought the 905R. I skipped the 907 line as well as the 910 line altogether as I didn't see any benefit. I didn't buy a new driver until the Ping Anser came out and I played that for several years. Then a 2016 M2. Thankfully Titleist brought out the TS series because I love Titleist drivers, I was happy with the Anser when the 913 and 915 drivers came out and while the 917 was a really good club it couldn't beat the M2. Typically when I find something that works I try to avoid buying anything new until I see a significant disadvantage by continuing to play my current club. That seems to be about every 3 or 4 years. I dabble, but those experiments usually result in a waste of time and money and I just keep playing what I am comfortable with.

The TS3 is firmly in my bag and has been for over a year.

I can say without a doubt the 905R is still my favorite driver ever though. The shape, look and sound are second to none. If I only played casual golf, who knows, I might just game that, but for me, the distance and forgiveness difference is substantial. I can hit a controlled cut with the TS3 farther than a big draw with the 905R. And if I do let loose and hit the draw with the TS3 the difference is pretty massive.

I never planned on selling any of these, but I do have a backup 905R that is in excellent condition sitting in my office if anyone's interested. It is 9.5* and it has a stiff Speeder. I bought it in mint condition several years ago and I took it to the range with me a few times to hit against my gamer just for curiosity.

Used to be a Titleist fan boy and loved my 905R with YS6. Heck, I even played two snow bird vacation rounds in Destin, FL last year with a 983K and loved it. However, I’ll echo the others in that the older models aren’t nearly as forgiving as newer ones. On the middle of the face the results are negligible. Miss that sweet spot however and you’ll lose a ton of distance. The 983 and 905 do feel tremendous though.

(Yes, I did a search. This is the newest 905r thread I could find, and I didn't want to start yet another one)
Lots of claims the 905r is the greatest ever, matches modern offerings etc. I'm not going to say that, but I will say that mine performed really well for me yesterday.
Since I went to Monte's clinic in March, my iron striking is radically improved, thanks to fixing my cupped wrist at the top. But since then, I have been struggling with my driver to launch it high enough, causing me to "force things." So I went searching through my (considerable) stable of old clubs to find something with more loft to use while I search for a new driver.
Lo and behold, I found a minty 10.5 905r with a YS-6+ stiff shaft in the garage. I don't even remember buying it, or playing it before. I likely just bought it cheap in order to get the shaft. Anyway, I hit it beautifully yesterday, shooting my lowest score in a while. What I really liked was that it played really straight for me. When needed, I could still work it either way, but it was hard to over-cook anything. This seems like the opposite of what @BIG STU said above. Distance wise, it certainly wasn't noticeably shorter than my 917 on average, and I hit a few as long as anything I have hit on that particular course. I'm not a high-speed/spin guy, so the fact that this old driver spins more than modern offerings probably doesn't hurt me like it might some of you guys. Oh, and it feels awesome too.

I posted somewhere in here, many years ago that I had the same exact combo and yes, it was magical. Heck I shot a decent for me round last year with a 983K with a YS6. For many of us that was just a great shaft. Honestly, I don’t know why I don’t find one and give it a try again ??‍♂️

This is my first post here in quite awhile. I've played a ton of drivers. I'm a 5 handicap and hit good drives about 270. My latest drivers have been the G410 Plus 9 degree with the Ping Tour 65 Stiff. I was bombing that thing but really didn't like the look of it. I also hit the Callaway Epic Sub Zero and Titleist TS3 (which was the longest for me on good hits).

On a whim the other day I was on Ebay and decided to purchase a Titleist 905R 9.5 Degree with Aldila NV 75 Stiff. I took it out and have played 2 rounds with it. This club is as long as anything I've tried and I've tried many. The shaft and head just look and feel perfect to me. It is definitely longer than the Titleist 910 driver. I don't see how it could be shorter than the TS3 because I saw parts of the course I hadn't seen before. I absolutely kill this club.

Now, one thing I could do is try out a Titleist TS3 Driver with a custom Aldila NV-75 stiff shaft. That would definitely tell me if one is longer than the other.

Oh, and I also put my old Ping Eye 2 Plus (no +) red dot, ZZ-Lite clubs back in the bag. These irons are so good. They have this crisp feel to them. The Ping Eye 2 wedge is fantastic.

I'm out.

I never had 905R but if there's a club I regret selling its 905S 400cc with Grafalloy Blue fully inserted. Anyway, Titleist 905R 460cc had a flatter lie but IMO was similar to current TS2 - Good club. The only thing I never liked about 905 series was the manner in which shafts were partially inserted, and a sole plug.

I've read these 905r worshiping threads before, but I never put a 905r into actual play until Sunday. I did play both the 905s and the 905t, each for some time, a few years back, before I got my 910. Both great feeling drivers, and the 400cc size really appealed to me.

Since the 905 series drivers came from the factory with my favorite shaft (YS-6+), it sucks that they are kind of tough pull the shafts from. I need to figure out how those weird threaded shaft adapters work so I can harvest the shafts from a few of these oldies but goodies.

The shafts weren't inserted that way (blind bore) at the factory. The 905 series had a bore-thru head - tipping recommendations were very important because when the the shafts were fully inserted, they could play stiffer to flex (sometimes significantly so), unless they had a longer parallel tip section. On reshafts, if the replacement shaft were already tipped (or lacked a long parallel tip section) then the blind bore method (partial insertion with the plug below it) was used to keep it true to flex. The 905 series also had the aluminum shaft sleeve, which added to the complexity of reshafting them. The builders I dealt with at the time said it wasn't a big deal, but if too much heat were applied the soft aluminum sleeve could get messed up.

A Graffaloy Blue fully inserted in a 905 head must have been stiff as hell. Was it an X-flex? I had an Aldila VS Proto in my 905R - that was a cannon. The Proforce V2 was a popular shaft in the 905 series as well. I wish I kept my original 905R. What a great driver.

Yep, blind-bore from the factory. My builder said similar about the sleeve and getting proper frequency was challenging.

When we first installed Blue my builder asked me if I wanted to try it out, I said sure. Turned out I really liked it, though it was past mid-point of X-flex frequency. And yes, it was a trustworthy cannon. Of all the drivers I owned, it was #1 and still is. Even though I really like my current driver it's #2.

Hit mine at the range yesterday. I confirmed what I found during my round this weekend... it really seems to want to go straight. I could turn it either way, but it was pretty tough to get it to curve a lot either way. I think this is a good thing for a driver. I'm heading out to play with it again now, so we'll see how it goes.

I was doing club repair and fitting for Golf Galaxy during 975D through 905 times and specifically remember pulling factory clubs and never encountered a blind bore. All of them were full bore-through. That doesn’t mean that it wasn’t ever done through a custom order but I don’t believe it was standard. As far as the aluminum sleeve, we always pulled heads using a heat gun for woods and I never worried about ruining the 905 series.

It’s one of the clubs I leave in the back of my vehicle for spur of the moment driving range sessions.......

I get 3-4 mph less ball speed than my G410lst tops, but it drops significantly when not middled. Spin is way higher too, but it’s a 9.5 and the G410 is set to 7.5. I like the old shaft in it as well, that’s why I kept it, a UST V2 Proforce 78 grams. A little heavier than I like now, but it’s great for range sessions.
