Amateurs with Staff Bags...Yes or No?(merged)

Recommended Posts

Yes, that's my guess based on other cart bags I've seen. However, I've not seen that specific bag in person, but I think it's a safe assumption because it would be a terrible design otherwise.

Im not sure yet, I just picked up a newish Nike VR bag and my plan is to just put it in the corner of my home office and just hold spare stuff but at this point idk what i going to do with it. I usually walk with the caddytek3 nd if I can push the Nike bag i probably will. I like to carry random clubs to play around with, and a couple of the guys i play with usually need extra balls which i always carry

Yesterday I came across what I believe was my first encounter with an amateur and their staff bag.

2017 Taylormade staff bag with matching hat and glove. I assumed he might have been a club pro at another course. First swing put that thought to rest.

OK whatever, use what you want. No matter to me. But the thing was just so darn impractical. And he had it mounted on a course issued push cart so it didn't really fit and was just so cumbersome for the guy all round.

The second that I achieve a scratch handicap my name is going on a staff bag!! I have a brand new one that I think looks amazing but it just sits in the corner with spare clubs in it for the day that I achieve scratch !! My carry and cart bag get all the use but I don't mind a nice staff bag because everything fits in there easily whereas I have to ration out what goes into my other bags. Whatever floats your boat I suppose.

As I said before, doesn't matter to me if a guy has a staff bag, uses iron head covers, has his name on his bag, or whatever, but yeah, those things weigh a lot and don't see much practicality to them. I sometimes wonder why they don't use stand bags on Tour. It would certainly be a lot easier for the caddy to carry, and I can't think of anything a professional would need that couldn't fit into a stand bag.

I've noticed a few players starting to do this. Sergio did it during his win in Mississippi a few weeks back. The main reason (besides sponsor advertising) that tour players carry a staff bag is because they keep A LOT of stuff with them at all times. Aside from the standard balls, gloves, tees, towels, etc... they also typically have at least 1 umbrella, rain pants and rain jacket, spare shirt, sunscreen, pullover if it's cool out, snacks/food, in John Daly's case a carton of cigs and a 6 pack of diet cokes, and a number of other things. As amateurs we can easily throw any extra stuff we bring to the course in the cart but obviously the pros don't have that option.

As to the original question, I've never really understood the point in having a staff bag as an amateur. Why force yourself to have to lug that giant thing around when you don't need to? If you're carrying around so much extra crap that you have to have a staff bag to fit it all in then you're probably carrying around too much stuff in my opinion.
