Recoil 110 F4 experience

Recommended Posts

I've done quite a bit of searching and found a couple older threads but wondering if anyone has any current experience with moving from steel to this particular shaft. I'm currently playing the Modus 120S and like the feel of the stiff flex for my swing speed (~100-105 driver, low 80s 6 iron) . I have a friend who is a much stronger swinger than I am and he plays the 95 recoils. I've hit his clubs and really like the way they feel. I know every swing is different so I can't base any impression of my future success on his success with the lighter weight, but I can't find anywhere to demo the 110 around me. Either way, I just took the plunge and bought a set of the recoil. Plan on building the 6 or 7 iron and seeing what's what.

I was hoping to get some experience from any of you who may have played an entire set of 110 and how they felt outside of the mid irons. My Modus in the MP20 HMB heads I'm playing are spinning like crazy. Haven't had a chance to play a round with them yet with snow currently in Colorado but didn't know if anyone had info on what flight I may expect in the shorter irons relative to the Modus. I've also looked at going heavier (S300 or AMT in the short irons to help bring the spin down a bit).

I've attached a quick snapshot of my latest range session with the HMB 6 iron and can't believe the spin numbers that were registering.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah those spin numbers are pretty crazy. Your lowest number would be an ideal average for a 28* 6 iron (thats about where I spin my 27* 5i), everything else is in 8-9i territory. It is hard to say what is causing that without any other data, but a shaft by itself can only be responsible for hundreds of RPM difference, not thousands. Assuming these numbers are accurate and you aren't getting weird misreadings, this sort of thing is usually caused by excess dynamic loft, usually either caused by flipping or an excessively open face at impact. What is your normal shot shape? If you are one of those pull-fade/slice types of players then your left misses are likely ones you are spinning lower where you've squared the face and pulled them, with the right misses being the high spinning ones, possibly exacerbated by low face contact. If you have any video of your swing or at least a detailed description then we can likely get to the bottom of this.

I am thinking it’s something wrong with the data collector. I had similar spin numbers all the way up to 4 iron. Yardages seemed pretty on though so tough to say. Pretty shallow through impact and I like to play a slight draw but can leave the face a hair open from time to time. I recall someone saying that the modus can get a bit spinny but I didn’t experience that in the P790 I played the modus in previously and I recognize those are 1.5-2 degrees stronger. I’ll likely build the recoil 1/2” longer than the current steel but I guess I need to get on a different monitor to confirm these backspin numbers

this was from a quick cold session at golf galaxy with the 7 iron. Looks a bit more in line.

Ok but I wouldn't make a shaft change based on just one monitor. If you can see a ball flight outside or find a trackman that's the move before pulling the modus. If your sick of the modus that's one thing but a single session at GG with funky results shouldn't count for much.

I wish I could help more but I don't remember much about the modus, and I ran into the same problem trying to test recoils. The bend profile and weight are pretty damn similar though. Modus a couple grams heavier. AMT's are money in the 6 iron and shorter. I play them and now and may go to the s400s in the future but other than that I know AMT is right.

I agree. Not going to take apart the set without seeing an outdoor flight for sure. Was possibly going to swap out a single mid iron just to test because I don't think I can even find a demo locally. The GC at Golf Galaxy looks to be pretty accurate with my expectations (second photo post). The first shot is from an indoor range that has the tracking built into the ceiling. I'm not sure who the manufacturer is but I've gotten decent results there in the past. Not as good as GC2 or GCQ or Trackman but good enough for my 9 HC swing typically. Thanks for the feedback. Maybe I throw the AMT in the 9 iron and see how those numbers look as I've got some odd gapping low in the bag with the HMB too. Could be loft on those as I haven't checked them since the build.

I am not one to check out all those no's on any swing monitors with my game, but Recoils 110 F4 are a wonderful shaft!

They were my first venture back into graphite after going steel only in numerous MB irons. I switched out TT DL R300 (113g) in my once had Mizuno MP-69 into these, and they felt smoother, performed great. I sold those irons due to some unfortunate cosmetic damage (my frickin' golf bag tumbles over in parking lots often!) and would play those shafts again in any irons in a heartbeat!

Primarily, I was hoping to alleviate front elbow pain - which they will assist in. I played them close to 3 seasons.

I have the Recoil 110 F4 shafts in a set of Bridgestone J15 CB's. I played DG S300/S400 for years until developing elbow problems 6-7 years ago. I switched to Recoil Proto 125 F4 because I've always preferred heavier shafts, and they performed the best in a fitting I did back then. Fast forward 5 years - I've lost about 50 pounds in the last year, lost my (admittedly inconsistent) swing from the weight loss, and lost distance as well (age 50). I decided to give lighter shafts a try - I went to a 60 gram shaft in the driver, a 95 gram shaft in the hybrid, and gave the 110 F4 a shot for the irons/wedges since I liked the Recoils so much previously.

It took a little while to get used to the lighter iron shafts, but I'm glad I switched. I still have my previous set of J15 CB's with the 125 Proto, and I've hit them side by side with the 110 F4 outside on the range and indoors on a high quality sim (the About Golf one). The 110's are longer for me by 6-8 yards per club (I'm at about 90 mph SS with a 6-iron and around 180 yards total distance +/- 5) with higher launch and a little more spin than the Proto 125 F4. See if you can demo the Recoils at a fitter - I really like them.

I bought a set pretty cheaply direct from Bridgestone several years ago when they had a sale, which I had re-shafted with the Recoil Protos. I liked them so much that I bought a second set (ridiculously cheap - like $400) from Bridgestone during a "Friends and Family" sale that they ran a few years back. That set sat in my basement for at least 3 years BNIB, until I had them re-shafted with the Recoil 110's earlier this year. I'm keeping both sets - I may have the set with the Recoil Protos re-shafted at some point with another set of 110's. They are great irons - a nice combination of forged feel and forgiveness.

I switched from PX 5.5 to Recoil 110 F4 in my I20 irons. My launch doesn’t look too much different, don’t know about spin (never been on a monitor), but I did pick up a few yards (about 1/2 club). Biggest positive for me is the significant reduction in elbow pain. With the PX, it got to the point that after the first couple of holes, I could hardly straighten my arm. Now it might get a little sore after 18, but nothing by comparison to the PX.
