Yeah not sure what the point of posting here is if you are not going to try and help others by letting us know what options you are finding in terms of cheap private clubs

i play during the week generally after 4 and on the weekends usually the same maybe an hour or 2 earlier it hasn’t been brutal. i have noticed this year more women of all ages, and more father son groups in my 3 years of playing. i expect to be at the course for 4 hours with a foresome at a easy pace with others on the course. if it’s dragging that bad by the time i am on the tenth tee i am not embarrassed to ask for a rain check or whatever if i was just added to the group. if it’s me and some buddies and the cooler is full i’ll start having a few beers before the 19th to ease the pain.

Lots of wishful thinking in this thread. Having worked at a variety of clubs doing everything from caddying to being an assistant professional, i have seen well run places and poorly run places, and they all have one thing in common.

Keeping golfers happy is about matching expectations to resources.

If golfers pay $50 a round, a golf course needs to do 40,000 rounds a year to keep the course maintained, or if they don't, conditions and experience will suffer. In addition, if they are doing 40,000 rounds year, the pace will be slow due to the sheer volume of golfers.

What i am getting at here is, if you find that mythical super cheap private club, you will be sacrificing something in exchange for that low price, whether it be conditions, exclusivity, golf staff, something will have to give.

As a golfer, you need to match your expectations with the resources you spend, otherwise you will constantly be let down or feel ripped off.

The more money you spend, the better experience you will have 99 times out of 100.

Its been absolutely terrible this year. Have to get out before 8:30 or youll be stuck. Played over a 5 hour round last weekend at Berkshire

If I have a buddy or two willing to play definitely playing a bit earlier. Got a tee time this Sunday at 7:45 actually but a surprise birthday party Saturday night so we will see how that goes lol. But seems that most of my rounds are between 9 and 11. Not living in the city (yet) so thats a huge factor too haha

Course is a hidden GEM. Awesome greens and great, fun track. And yes, extremely affordable memberships.

@Max21 @gioguy21 more data less drama lol.. I joined New Jersey National this year, and all in its $5k/year with no food min and you can walk any time so no cart fees unless you want. If you're under ~30, then Stanton Ridge is less than 4k (~3,600 when I was there in 2016, I paid ~2800 for under 27) but you do have a small food minimum. Don't know how much Stanton has increased their rates in the three years since but can't imagine itd be drastic. I heard a rumor Montclair is 3k for certain age brackets (plus unknown "minimal" initiation) but I personally cant verify that. Might be an invite only type deal. Last time i checked into the crystal package it was 6k but doesnt really include ballyowen and the rest of the courses are trash/slammed with people and always slow rounds.

Other clubs i know 100% are around or below 4k (some semiprivates in here and some significantly under 4k) would be Glenwood, Fox Hollow, Knoll, Royce Brook, High Bridge Hills

If you're in NW NJ I would suggest lake mohawk for proximity; I've heard they're offering a good deal rn but no idea what it is. Either way 100% better then newton cc which still has a hefty initiation somehow despite crappy golf, food, service, 150 yard range... If you're willing to drive a little bit and consider NJ National shoot me a message and I'll hook you up with our membership director.

Thanks for the info! Much appreciated. I actually just spoke to NJN last week but have yet to reach back out to them. It would be an hour drive for me so I dont know if I am willing to do that all the time. I used to work at Crystal Springs, I dont understand how anyone would get a membership there. When I was at Panther Valley they mentioned that around August they run a promo for Junior Memberships where you pay for 2020 but get the rest of 2019 included which also seemed very very inticing.

Panther Valley is a great course and membership/staff is awesome! I grew up in that area and caddied there in the summers. Even as a kid, it was always a welcoming environment and everyone there was good to me. They have the full country club experience to offer as well so definitely a benefit once wife/kids come into the equation. I would of joined there in a heartbeat if it was less than an hour but its more like an hour and ten or twenty from me.

Sorry to get your hopes up.. I heard that from a member at Plainfield who is considering joining there as a second club. Knew it sounded too good to be true.

Newton actually has a very small initiation fee and longer range then Mohawk. As for food, Mohawk's kitchen has been shut down all season yet they're still charging members food minimums. On top of that, their dues are a fair amount higher annually then Newton. I'd join Newton over Mohawk any day of the week.

Idk man.. Neither has a range over 200 yards so thats kinda mute. Food was never good at either IMO, but Mohawk's course is distinctly better. It is most definitely conditioned better, but the course also has a lot more character. Either way, if you're considering one of them... I'd strongly suggest forgetting them both and driving another 15 minutes to Panther Valley. That way you get pool, tennis, good food, and a real golf course. Also, no initiation fee and lower dues

I hear you. My in-laws live in Sparta so it's a coin flip for which I'd join...especially coming from Bergen county.

I may be biased as I grew up playing Lake Mohawk as a Junior, but I also attended Newton's junior program they had, and have played in a few junior events there. Based on course alone, I'd choose Mohawk any day. It's a short track, but plays longer, is challenging, has character, and the greens were amazing this past summer. Mohawks practice facility is nothing to rave about, but I can't believe Newton's practice facility is any better that it would sway someone from joining another club.

north jersey golf is ridiculously expensive and pace of play is super slow. i usually play in morris county, the county courses aren't there aren't too bad with a county membership, problem is, not all of them have driving ranges. still haven't tried Flanders, but I like to play at Sunset Valley. Nice course, well maintained, but no driving range. I've played bowling green up in oak ridge and the prices go higher and higher every year and there is no substantial improvement. not to mention they charge premium pricing still in late sept/early october

that insane! they'll charge you full price even when they aerate the greens. but they won't tell you they've done that till after you've paid. other places I've played have at least told you they've aerated prior to paying. Only time I play at BG anymore is when I get a groupon or a discount from costco. i refuse to pay full price for that place
