Not to be cynical, but Honma is making a huge push here in Canada (and elsewhere). I think they have offered aggressive trading terms for retailers given some of the floor space that I’ve seen them start to take up. I love the TXG guys but I do think they may be getting great margins on these and want to do some quantity. Pretty easy to make some subtle comments and get people really interested. I am interested in Honma. The Rose Protos look great and I liked the 747v when I hit them.

You're getting caught up too much on semantics my man. Unless you’re comparing GI/SGI to blades I highly doubt you’ll find much of a difference In the real world between these and GI/SGI irons. In fact, these have huge soles on them and quite a bit of offset. Only difference is these are a little shorter heal to toe.....which I find GI/SGI irons actually hinder my play because there’s more to get caught up in the turf. Try them out before you discount them.

My experience has been comparing them together on a simulator inside. TW’s were a few yards longer otherwise very comparable in terms of numbers. HMB’s felt slightly better and have smaller soles. TW’s didn’t seem as long heal to toe. Overall I hit the TW’s much better (in two 45 min sessions). I briefly played HMB’s before going back to my i210’s in the latter part of this season. Might pick up a set of used TW’s this offseason if the price is right.

i just picked up a set yesterday after going back to my golf store on 4 separate occasions to test them.

being a club ho i went from:

p790 - great feeling great sound, bulky head, jumpy distance. really liked the forgiveness on these irons but i would get the occasional flyer over the green.

i500 - great looking, thinner topline than p790, long blade length, clicky feel. looked better than the p790s but feel was harsher and the paint wore off easily. changed out of this set fairly quickly

p760 - thinner topline, soft feeling, not as forgiving. was the best of the lot for a long time. i would test other irons against this whenever something new came out (hmb, jpx, apex, t200) but nothing took these out the bag until now.

twx - look. compact blade look (even though its about the same as p760 it looks smaller). love the satin finish and the design is very pleasing. looking down even though these irons have a wide sole they hide it very well.

sound. feels very solid. not as soft as p760 but more of a solid miura like feel. sound is strong twack!

forgiveness. really easy to hit. especially the long irons. went head to head with the p760s but the long irons is really what sold me.

hopefully these stay in the bag for a long time.

Can you take any comparison pics? Or give me a sole dimension, im concerned as to all the talk of the huge soles may be a deal breaker for me! Can you see the back of the club at address? Thanks!

Hit them on a launch monitor. They were fitted in my preferred shaft (Modus 105 S) so that made it much easier to get an accurate impression. They are as good as TXG's review said. Feel was great, ball speed was as good as any other hollow iron. This is the first Honma product I'm seriously considering. My only gripe is they do look too chunky in the scoring irons.

Thanks so much for the pics!!

Also did anyone else watch the review on the tw-x and the p790. Looks like ball speed was as high or higher on the tw-x at 29* than the 790 which was at 26*?? Or am I missing something

I saw the reports of wide soles on the Honmas but those are even wider than I expected. And it seems the blade length is a tad shorter than the 760. Thanks for the pics. Very helpful since you don’t see them in stores much.

I just went through a fitting hitting the HMB, the p760’s, Srixon 785, p790’s, t200’s, and the TW-X’s. I currently game the MP-18 sc’s.

p790 and t200 were colicky as all heck. Not fun to hit.

760’s we’re not much better Could tell it was hollow headed.

The HMB was a great disappointment. Not as long and felt a lot like i500’s, a weird mix of clicks and hollow. The fitter agreed. Good club but disappointed in the feel for a mizuno.

Srixon was nice but too light for me.

Honma was the money. Felt like my MP-18’s but so much easier to get up in the air. Also went with the Honma wedges over the t20’s. Heard that Luke hasn’t switched over to the t20’s form the t7’s because they don’t perform. My very short testing with them confirms that thought. Told my fitter I would stick with old wedges over new t20’s.

I have had 3 sets of Honma and noticed a set for sale from America but they dont have the SAKATA factory stamp on them or made in Japan. So I also heard there made from inferior metal when there being made in America. Also some fakes being made in america so made me so worried about buying them and having the shipped over to scotland.

TXG Matt hit these and loved them. Said the click of them was very faint definitely less than the p790 and a smaller head but wider sole with great feel.

The bit about the manufacturing process etc not being to good as the japan stuff is this all true. Can someone please advise. Thanks

Ian.

Just had to chime back in on these clubs. I’ve moved on from them but they were solid clubs. Really good distance control and superb feel. I had the Vizard graphite shafts which ultimately didn’t work for me. The very wide soles weren’t ideal for me either as I’m more of a picker but wasn’t a total deal breaker. Might try them with a steel shaft down the road but they’d have to beat the PXG 0211s I’m in now. The cast PXG actually feel softer and fit my eye/swing better.

I got them from eBay seller ksouth9. Bought tons of stuff from that seller, always in brand new condition (some auctions say used but check the pics out) and always authentic.

I ordered the single 3 iron (18 degree loft) since it’s cheaper than a TW-U. I received it yesterday. They aren’t stamped “made in Japan” but have a sticker/label that says “made in Japan”. Hopefully I can hit the 3 iron next week.
