Swing Weight on a cut down putter

I currently play the white hot XG#1. It was originally 34 inches but I have it cut to 31.5, as I like a short putter. Any day now my YES! Tracy II will be showing up. This putter I believe is 33 inches and I will cut to 31.5. My question is does cutting it, affect the swing weight? The reason I am asking is because I never really thought about it. But watching a WITB video with Phil he said because his putter is cut to 33 inches he needs to add lead tape as to not affect the weight. As someone who is still failrly new to tinkering and working on my clubs, is this something that I need to worry about as well? If it helps I use the Super Stroke Slim grip.

Yes, cutting a putter down will change the swingweight. Here is a chart that kind of helps with that http://www.scottycameron.com/customization/custPopup.asp?mode=3 Think of it like this.... If you have a sledgehammer in your hand is it going to feel lighter holding it up by the head or at the very end of it? Same thing is true for putters, closer you get to the head, the lighter it feels and thus needs to be compensated for if that's the feel you prefer.

So does that Scotty chart essentially say If I were to cut a shaft from 34" to 33" I would need to add 5 grams of weight back to the head to achieve the same swing weight ? That doesn't seem like enough.

Many manufacturers use a heavier head weight for the 34" and under putters (Odyssey does.) So if you took it from 34 to 32 for example, it would be the same thing you'd be getting from the factory. If you want to offset this some, weigh the grip when you cut it off and try to find a lighter grip with which to replace it to make up some of the balance point (sw) shift.
I believe your Odyssey has a 345 gram head weight, and if I recall correctly, so too does the Tracy II. So their SW should be close if a similar grip is to be used.

Hi @Howard Jones !

just seeking some guidance before I cut my putter down 2".. I recently purchased a 35" Scotty Cameron, but was fitted into a 33" a while back via SAM puttlab and 33" fits me perfectly.

I like the current total weight and feel(swing weight) and was wondering if I should ask my club builder to " match the current total weight and swing weight of the 35" but please cut down 2"?

sorry, I didn't want to make any mistakes..

btw, I will ask them to save the original Pistolini plus grip it comes with.

thank you so much in advance sir!!

Only one way to find out, try it, but we get close if we just "tape down" play length (use the tape to cover the part you plan to cut off:

Now try the putter like that, the feel of head weight goes down, for the better or worse, only testing can tell.

Cameron used to have a head weight progression of 10 grams, using 330 grams head for 35", 340 grams for 34" and 350 grams for 33".

Im a big fan of counterweights in putters to improve the balance and resistance in both ends, most of us benefit from a higher grip weight, but a lower head weight does the same.

Try this DIY putter tune up balance test both at full length, vs "taped down", and you will instantly know if it become better or worse, and if it became worse "taped down", start adding lead tape to the head until it feel and works right. Be aware of the importance of grip weight when you change grips. Higher grip weight, slower hands (more stable wrists), but you get the same effect by shortening and leave head weight alone, but only testing can tell whats right for you.

I like heavier grip weights, but this ends up making the dead weight of the entire putter too heavy.
