Mizuno ST 190 Driver

Well AAR on my wife using the ST190 - she loves it. Made several gains in stats across the board, most noticeably almost 20yds in distance/roll out over the 440cc JPX900 head she had before. Shes hitting it about 170-180yds now.

 

Needless to say she loves it.

 

The ST190 3 wood over her JPX900 3 wood not so much yet, she's still getting used to it.

So from my understanding after speaking to Mizuno, the 180 and 190 are essentially the same head just a different look and sound/feel. I purchased the ST180 because I have gotten sick of the muted thud that I have gotten with carbon crows over the past few years. As soon as I got the 180 I took it out to the field behind my house and hit 3 drives... 3 perfect drives that launched great and seemed like they would have ran forever on a fairway. The sound was HORRID.... a crack. It sounded like a metal baseball bat hitting a baseball size rock. it actually hurt my ears a bit... I LOVE IT!!! The blue head mixed with one of the ugliest sounds ever. It's perfect. Hopefully the rain they are calling for here in PA Sat morning holds out a bit so I can at least get 9 holes in.

Like you, I picked up a 10.5 driver as well. Should be here tomorrow. Loft angle on a 9.5 looks good to me, so I will be adjusting mine a bit. I hope it;s just a loft number that is different and nothing else changes from the 9.5 to a HL head. Can the adjustment be dialed to go from the 10.5 to just a 10 or does it go directly to plus or minus the degree? I;ve hit a buddy's Rogue in 9'ish loft and it's perfect. Hope this one adjusts well

Has anyone hit the ST190 9.5 with CK white 70 stiff ?

If so, good combo or is there a better combo out there for this head ?

Shafts should be matched to the player, not to the head. Is the CK White 70s suits your swing then it is a good fit, if it doesn't then it isn't.

Small update - my wife loves her ST190. Gained a solid 20yds and its repeatable over her 440cc JPX900 head.

 

The ST190 3-wood is a different story, she hates it compared to her JPX900 fwy. But like any good 3 wood, you cant kick it out of the bag if its working!

Picked up an ST-190 for a really good price. Shafted it with the same shaft I use in my G400 Max and have been playing it for a few rounds now. Looks great at address, sound/feel is great as well. Still getting used to it but so far I think its slightly longer overall than the Max and every bit as accurate. I think the face is much more forgiving than the Max, slight mishits are still long, not a big drop in distance. Never thought I'd see the day when a Mizzy driver replaces a Ping in my bag, but it may be happening soon. And I just bought the cool multi-cam headcover for the Ping too, dangit!

When we're talking about forgiveness, how's the stability in direction? Usually my misses are lateral compared to short and long. I'm comparing Mizuno and Ping for 2020 and I'm mostly looking for fairway finding capability. Distance shouldn't be an issue with a fitted driver (for the record I haven't played one lol).

That's extremely interesting to hear about the 190's forgiveness over the max....

how is the trajectory with the st190? for a given loft(9.5) would you say it is sim to a Callaway Rogue perhaps that is 9 degrees or hits higher or lower? not sure whether 9.5 or 10.5 is best option. changing a 10.5 to 9.5 may open face up too much. thanks

Same question here! Just picked up a 190 off the board for $120 but in a 10.5. My old Turner Burner circa 1991 was a 9.5 and wanted to stick around that loft but I figured with adjustability now I could drop down to 9.5 and be fine. I don't want a high-flight driver: I have been hitting my wife's with a senior flex shaft and the thing probably launches at 18-20 degrees.

Back when the ST190 first came out - I forgot where this info came from - but the 10.5 is marked as 10.5HL because it's more like an 11.5-12 degree head than a 10.5. The 9.5 is closer to 10 as well.

Not sue why Mizuno did this but if you google 'st190 actual loft' or something a long those lines it should come up in a search.

Yeah, I just saw that. I have already paid for the driver...not sure it has shipped yet. I can always play around with it and see how I like the adjustability!

 

I suppose a stiffer shaft would compensate for the extra loft, correct, although it may cause me to lose a bit of clubhead speed and snap through the hitting zone? When I have hit regular or senior flex drivers in the past with my typical loft, they have always felt more like a 3W than a driver. When I play well, I have relaxed wrists and hit the ball too high at times.

Shaft stiffness generally has nothing to do with what you mentioned. It's 100% player depending, but a shaft too stiff or too soft can effect dispersion, length of the drive, and where your miss can be (left or right) - and to some degree spin and launch for a consistent striker.

ah, good to know, thanks! I will try closing the ST190 down by 2 settings and perhaps adjust how I line up or my where my feet positioned.

Just put a new 9.5 into play this weekend with a KK DC tini. Had no issues with spin or flight. I loved the st180 before it except for it's terrible noise. The st190 is everything I love about the 180 except it's pretty and sounds great. Well worth the $180 new it can be found at now.

My brother just got rid of his.. not sure why it was pretty solid all the way around. He just wasnt feeling it. Felt better then taylor made drivers though to me.

Interesting....I always felt that maybe my ST190 was a little higher loft than stated. I felt like it was launching and spinning a little too high for what the loft should have been, so this makes sense. I'll try going full "Lower" as I was one click above before. I use ribs in my grips so experimenting with this is a pain, hah.

Question about adjustments - I am consistently hitting this toward (not on) the heel.  With my Epic, I am more center face.  Assuming I put a good swing on it, what hosel adjustment might center things up for me?

Are the clubs playing to the same length or is the 190 playing longer than the Epic?

The 190 is longer.  It appears to be about 3/4" longer than the epic.

Hit the st200 and i have to say i think its a step down from the 190. Ball speeds werent as good and the sound is not as desirable to my ear.
