Putter grip install, why do I never feel like it is on straight???

Every time I swap putter grips, I try to eyeball the putter grip to make it look straight. I have used a level and other methods to try and align them but it never feels or looks perfect. Is there any good tips for installing putter grips for guys like me with self prescribed OCD??

Use a thin wire to run down the back of the grip... like an alignment aid. secure it to the tape and you can basically "spin" the grip for accuracy.

Maybe it's just because you did it yourself so you expect it to be slightly out? maybe it's perfect. I know how you feel I feel the same when I do mine, just see how it putts if you did it right then you won't miss

I've just used a small level for the few that I've done, clamp the shaft use level to get the head square, slip the grip on then use the level across the flat front of the grip. I know how you feel though thinking it may not be 100%. Especially if your old grip was on there for 2 seasons and was slightly off, then the new one will feel strange at first even if its bang on.

A laser level will help. Home Depot etc or rental. Set it up past the end of the putter with both lines enabled. The vertical on the putter face. The horizontal on the flat sections of the grip.

My new odyssey stroke lab was out a few degrees. It was driving me nuts by the feel until I verified it! Once you know it, you need to fix it or all your OCD alarm bells will be driving you nuts!

Maybe you don't NEED it on straight? Straight putter grip felt like crap for me forever. Always had issues squaring the face. Seems my hands prefer a grip installed about 10* open. Can practically square it with my eyes closed. Install your next one with tape and solvent. Get on a tile floor and adjust the grip until you can set the putter down with your eyes closed and it is square. You have found your ideal putter grip angle! Let dry and make more putts!

I do carpentry work for a living and I do use a level and a square constantly but I have a good eye for when things are not level, plumb or square. I blow my putter grips on with an air compressor and use blue painters tape instead of grip tape. When I get the grip on I sight down the flat side of the grip and make sure it aligns with the sight line on the head of the putter. I can move the grip around with a puff of air and a slight twist.

i had a look at several putters in a major shop.Also irons .All over the place some miles open some shut

just nobody that assembles clubs cares enough and/or has enough time to make them dead square

I'm more along these lines, I don't worry about how square it actually is as long as it looks right to me. I've also had people badger me that my iron grips are crooked, until we can agree that whichever eye is dominant will affect how it looks to you at address.

I always use the 90degree edge of a door or table to get the flat face of my grip perpendicular to the putter head. Once this is done I eyeball any minor tweaks so that the face sits correct to my eye.

This is my process for changing putter grips at home as well. My post-install test is to line the putter face up square to a line on the floor, then squeeze the grip hard a few times - if the face doesn't open or close, you've got it on straight enough.
