Srixon Z585/785 Combo iron set???

My set is 585 6-P with a U85 5iron. After some time with them, I’d say they are pretty fantastic. Since the OP is looking for a split set, I’ll give feedback on the longer irons. The 6 gives a higher ball flight than you'll expect. All irons are longer than I expected. You may need to tweak your wedge lofts if the 785 P flies as far as the 585. If I were buying again, I’d get the 585 5-iron and a U85 in 4-iron (dumping a hybrid). The U85 is a cannon.

It's all down to fit. I'd say average player average height the 585 is probably a great option to have starting at 5 or 6. I wouldn't go U85 until 3 or 4 unless you really need help getting the ball in the air. If you are a very high ball hitter like myself (130-140ft apex) 785 all the way through. Can't say enough about these irons.

Initial impressions after a range session and five holes...

Wow! The 585s are long! The 585 four iron is 10 to 15 yards longer than the MP4 and the FG Tour v4. I hit the other two 4 irons about 195. The 585 finished 6 yards short of pin high uphill from 212 with one yard of roll out due to landing into an uphill. The five and six iron are longer as well. The 785 seven iron is slightly longer and the eight thru wedge settle in similar to the MP4 and FG v4.

I am now expecting a significant gap between the 6 and 7 iron. I will probably buy the 785 six iron and make the gap between the five and six iron.

Throughout the set, I am getting a higher ball flight. Is more significant in the long irons. Feel is solid with good feedback especially in the 785s. Not quite the pure feel you get from a blade, but so close that you can tune your swing with the feel, unlike some cavity backs.

Tomorrow will be a full 18 with $1k pot from ten twosomes. Will have a better idea tomorrow.

WOW. The great Ernie. If he can handle U85s up to 6i I am going to give it a try. I was debating wether to go 5i 585 / 6-PW 785 but will demo U85 5i. Love 785s but not so much 585s. Did not hit U85s so far.

As a lefty, I know we have full sets of the 585 and 785 available, but I don’t see pre set combo sets in lefty on the site. Could they still be comboed in left handed and Srixon would adjust the loft/lie accordingly to allow the set to blend?

Based on the online specs with the combo splitting at the 6i Srixon doesn't adjust the lofts there is a 4 degree gap between 7 and 8 iron and a 5 degree gap (27-32) between 6 and 7 which is the stock lofts for both irons. When I ordered mine in lefty I split the set at 5 iron and had the 5 iron ordered 1 degree weak for better gapping so it went 22-25-28-32 and so on.

3.8 index digger who’s owned multiple sets. Combo, 5’s 7’s and 9’s. Currently in 745’s. Paid $400. I’d say they are the best irons I’ve ever had and I’ve had a lot. I’d be aware of fliers from 5 series but I’d definitely get the fat shovel in the 4 iron next time. Shane Lowry won the open with 4 and 5 in the 5 series IIRC.

I have a combo set of 565/765 and they are terrific. I don’t really feel much of a difference between the two forgiveness wise. They are both pretty forgiving.

Really liking them so far. I've fired a few of my lowest rounds consecutively since bagging them. I went AMT tour white S300. Love the flight and trajectory I'm seeing throughout the bag and spin and stopping power hasnt been an issue.

beauty setup. Did u do what haber did and weakened the z585 for proper gapping? I was thinking it could be done the other way where u strengthen the 785 to match 585 lofts. I like the of playing 4-6 z585 and the rest 785.

The 4i’s are the actually the same lost and 5i is only 1 degree stronger in the 585. I didn’t personally adjust anything.

I had gapping issues with the standard specs. Weakened the 5 and nine iron two degrees and the 6 thru 8 one degree. Created a 4 degree gap between each iron and all is good.

Good call. The stock lofts are a bit whacky and don’t actually lead to much distance improvement.

I strengthened the lofts on the 7-PW by 1*. Otherwise I didn't really see any difference and had no gapping issues in the split. They are great sticks.

I go with the u65-3 and 4, 565-5 and 6, 765-7 and 8, 965-9 and PW, been this way since they came out, did a trackman gap fitting and had them bent accordingly. It put a stop to my ho'in days 100% in its tracks. Forgiveness where I need it and playability where I want it!
