This is what I have done for years. I search online for used clubs and play them on course. Do not need a machine to tell me or estimate my numbers. I go to The course and hit side by side with current clubs and can see the flight, distance, dispersion, etc. Easy to find clubs without stock shafts too if that is what you are looking for. If you are patient you can buy at good prices and resell. Usually I resell for about what I paid for it or slightly higher/less. Worth it to me even if I lose a few bucks to test the club before buying. Have had good results for me and probably saved me some cash over time.

I am a 2 handicap , ball striking has never been an issue as long as the lie angle and static weight feels right I could play with anything. Not a brand snob I have played Mizuno, Ping , TM forges irons, Titleist irons on two separate occasions. Current set is Titleist 716 CB 4-PW with C-Taper S+ flex since the irons were released in 2016. I like them but the three or four seasons of play is showing and the heads are very worn on the higher lofted clubs.

I am in the process of completed a full bag fitting over the course of two sessions. The first part was irons and wedges. They kept pushing the Tyalormade TW blade, P730 which felt awful and P790 which I am sure is a great club but doesn’t fit my game. and graphite iron shafts, started with the Titleist T-100 , went on to the Callaway Apex Pro, asked for something different and they brought over a Level Golf iron shafted with an X flex Accra CW shaft the results were lack luster with all as the mats they use if you hit down on the ball cause the ball to ride up the face and result in a top groove center strike which is awful, fitter was not concerned when I mentioned it , then went back to the Apex Pro as they had none of the new MP-20’s in yet. Shafted with a Mitsubishi 90 gram graphite steel combo , I currently play KBS C-Taper’s S+ Flex without any issue. The graphite was dropping so severely at impact they adjusted the lie 3 flat. Before even going to the driver I was presented for the best clubs for me whicb was the graphite shafted Callaway Apex Pro which they wanted full MSRP for with the graphite shafts full MSRP PURING grips which were not what I told the fitter I wanted at the beginning and a total build cost of almost 4 grand. I questioned the Non tappered shafts and boring out the heads which they said was the only option.

We then went on to drivers same sequence light shafts nothing compared to my current Accra shaft which is in the mid sixties. They questioned me where I had gotten it and called it old . It’s from last season. They gave me the Fuji Ventus which was not working and I didn’t like but it was still the best for me per their opinion.

I said I didn’t like the feel and they just kept switching heads , spin rage <2k didn’t matter they claimed because the AOA was positive 8 consistently. I asked for a heavier shaft and again I was handed a Callaway fusion subzero with a 39 gram shaft.

No other option to hit besides standard size grips which was a disappointment. I was getting frustrated from the same hook issue mentioned earlier. The reason it turns out was their track man was not even set up correctly and pointed at the right corner of the screen and that was the reason why every shot was a dead hook. It was adjusted back in line and at this point two hours in.

I suggested we finish another day and do the putter fitting which was helpful except they wanted to bend my Newport 2 three degrees strong for loft I said I will send it back to Scotty Cameron to have them do it as they only will bend it a degree strong so the neck does not snap. Driver and fairway woods and hybrid fitting to complete this week which I am trying to keep an open mind about but with the iron experience and conclusion of +1/2 inch 3 flat with d-7 iron sw , no moi matching available boring the heads to .370 from .355. Because they didn’t stock the same shaft in tapper tip even though it’s available.

I am an advocate for puring graphite shafts and have been for years but I would never play that light of a shaft graphite or steel. also the bottom end of the set suggested was measured to incorrect length and lie when I checked against the OEM spec sheet when I got home. It was an experience , would never buy without outdoor and being able to see the ball flight off of a mat with nothing below the turf and were cheap in my opinion. High pressure sale before fitting was even completed.

I might do an iron fitting there.

If I go Mizuno with Modus 120 shafts, do they build them or does Mizuno? Just curious on pricing.

Depends. They will price it out with their build, but despite what people paint them as, you can definitely order through them as a stock build. You might forfeit any sort of fitting guarantee but it is a cheaper option.

I did a full bag fitting at CC in Needham, MA two years ago and thought it was a generally positive experience. I went in pretty open to changing over the entire bag, but even with me willing to spend up I never felt anything resembling a hard sell. In fact, the ultimate recommendation ended up at a new driver shaft, a lie adjustment on my existing irons, and a loft adjustment on my putter. Maybe it’s changed since I went in, but the comments about $700 shafts and whatnot absolutely didn’t match my experience.

Thanks for the response. I'm looking at MP 20 or T100 with DG S300. Fairly stock if you ask me but I'm not wanting to go in paying $400 over retail.

I might just reach out to them to see what it may be like. Again, what I'd be doing would be pretty stock but who knows. I tested out the Modus 3 120 stiff yesterday in a JPX 919 Tour and T100 and did NOT like it on course. It played differently than the DG S300. I didn't really like the 919 Tour either. It almost reminded me of the Callaway Apex Pro irons released back in 2014 - same finish and kind of a firm feeling.

I had the same experience at the Charlotte location for a driver fitting. I was hitting a big draw or hard hook which definitely will not happen on 75% of my shots. The ones that would of went straight, would of been a line drive 45 degree to the opposite field. Also my club head speed was about 10 mph slower than anything been tracked on this year, although my ball speed was about accurate. It was giving me a smash factor around 1.55 and 1.58 on the majority of my drives. When I was leaving I did notice that the actual monitor was slightly open, about 20 degrees, and not parallel to me. I'm not a Trackman wiz, how would this effect data?

Here’s the one thing I don’t understand about Club Champion. Why not at least offer the option of fitting with respect to stock shafts? I realize their business model is to upsell on higher priced exotic shafts, but if the majority of people are going in there simply to get fitted and then buying the equipment elsewhere, why not at least let those people try the stock offerings to see if they perform comparably to the exotic offerings?

I thought CC had stock shafts in their store but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anyone try them when I’ve visited the stores and someone is hitting.

I do wonder their sales as well but CC was recent purchased by this summit partners. Summit-backed Club Champion AcquiredCC now has their members reward if you buy more than $1000 in a year. The rewards are things that they have guaranteed since the company opened so its interesting.

I had an iron fitting last month and that's all we hit were stock shafts. Maybe my measley 80 mph 7 iron didn't deserve otherwise. Ha

Got fitted a second time at the end of 2019. Full bag this time catching the 50% off sale.

I had a different fitter than my last time, and I must say, I was very satisfied. I changed my swing a bit during the year and wanted ensure my previous fitting still worked for me. This fitter didn't try to push any product on more, nor try to offer the most expensive items. Just stuck to actual fitting. He made some good choices to begin with, so I didn't spend lots of time trying across the spectrum.

Left with an hour to spare!

What I got as suggestions:

-Keep driver and FW stock and the way I have it configured.

-Upgrade my hybrids (going for a single one now) with alt stock shaft (TS2 with Atmos 7 Red)

-Change my irons: distance and dispersion was unbelieveably more consistent with the suggest set

-Wedges need no change (surprised him and myself with my consistency)

-Adjusted lie of my putter and and suggest lie and loft change for the new set of irons I was NOT buying from them.

Done. I couldn't have been more pleased.

I have been to the location in Cleveland Ohio a few times and have had GREAT experiences. If you are going there see Mike Snodgrass. Dude is awesome and the entire fitting process was very methodical. Pricing for clubs is fairly high BUT all iron shafts are frequency matched and all wood shafts include puring in the price. Also, if you do purchase through them and get to the course and things aren't working right they let you come back in and exchange for something that will work.

Obviously this place isn't for everyone but if you can afford it and find a good fitter then it is a great asset.

I just had a Club Champion fitting. I enjoyed it. I knew the clubs would be expensive, but I was honest with them about what I wanted to spend, and they worked with me to get in my price range. To the post about the hooks, I had the same experience, and it was the only negative thing I would say about the fitting. The problem is that for a right handed player, the Trackman radar line is four feet right of the center of the screen. If you line up along the mat path, it reads fine. I had a problem with the visual of lining up along the mat, and then viewing the screen and seeing that I was lined up 30 yards right. It was an illusion that I had a lot of difficulty overcoming. They should reconfigure their mats from a right and left play sided to a center play area aligned with the projection on the screen.

I'm not rich, but I've wasted enough money on trial and error buying stuff off the rack. I went in knowing that the sticker shock was coming. I would have loved to have gone to Toronto and the TXG Studio, but I can't. I think that the experience is worth the money. YMMV

I had a great experience getting fit for irons at the Baltimore location. I knew kind of what to expect from CC going in, and made sure to book their most experience fitter. He was fantastic and we ended up in a really solid combo. Of course, they quoted me an obscene mount of money for a 2018 iron (in 2019) with a stock offered shaft. I found a used set, had them bent to spec, and have played them with a lot of improvement despite not having the exact swingweights. I saved about $1000 doing that.
