Taylormade M5 Tour 8* Degree - Does It Exist?

Hey everyone,

I'm sure this is a likely "yes" or "no" question that someone with more knowledge than myself can quickly answer..

I'm looking at buying a M5 at some point before Spring (in central Canada, so winter is just beginning). My question is quite simple: I really like (prefer) the shape of the M5 Tour as opposed to the M5. However, I want it in 8 degrees, if at all possible. All tour issued 8 degree M5s that I have came across are the M5 (as opposed to the M5 Tour), does a 8* degree M5 Tour exist or am I SOL?

Bottom line….get a 9* Tour and adjust the hosel down to 8*.

I actually got on a launch monitor tonight and had a chance to compare the M5 and M5 Tour head-to-head, and honestly, as someone who struggles to find the center of the club face, my preference has shifted towards the M5 (although I still prefer the shape of the M5 Tour).

To be completely honest, I have been out of the loop as far as equipment goes for quite a few years now, so please excuse my ignorance... I'm asking for any help/advice/insight in terms of recommendations.

I have settled on the Tour Issue 8* M5 head, which I will likely buy through Will Peoples given his reputation, but I'm quite undecided, and frankly extremely unknowledgeable, in regards to my options on the shaft. I am leaning towards to 60g 6.5 HZRDS HULK in the 8* degree head, as I assume that will be an extremely low spin setup - hopefully as low spin as possible.

I have attached some numbers from my launch monitor session tonight. The setup I was using for this segment was an off-the-shelf 9* degree M5 with a 62g 6.5 HZRDS Black. My miss was almost always a snap hook that was going low and left when I really went after it. I can't speak to the accuracy of all of these numbers as I believe the monitors at this particular store weren't particularly cutting-edge technology and doing some quick math on the smash factor, something seems a tad off.

I'm running on the assumption that the 60g 6.5 HZRDS HULK would be extremely low spin and would enable me to really go after it and not fear the low left miss.

I would greatly appreciate any insight on the ideal spin/launch angle numbers at that SS/BS because as I said, I have a very limited knowledge base in that regard. I was thinking that somewhere around 8-9 degrees and 1600rpm spin would be good numbers to shoot for...

That looks like a setup that only measures ball speed and uses a fixed smash factor to estimate clubhead speed. Unfortunately it looks like it was setup for a 7iron, hence the lower fixed smash factor. Those clubhead speeds are going to be around 10mph too high based on that. You're still bringing some serious power though! Given the miss you mentioned (supported by the numbers), you probably wouldn't lose much by dialing back a bit for more consistent face contact. At those speeds it starts to get dangerous when the spin dips below 2,000. Ball flight starts to get really unstable and can snap left on you more easily.

My first suggestion would be to look at shafts over 70g weight. Admittedly, I have a bias towards heavier clubs, but if you're fighting a hook, it seems to me adding a little shaft weight is one way of countering that.

It's not like you're in danger of losing a lot, in the 180+ ballspeed arena. I would expect you'd lose nothing in terms of speed, and could even gain a hint.

Just my biased, never got above 170 but have fought hooks, perspective. LOL

Recommend a heavier shaft such as Ventus black 7X or T1100 (not hulk) 70g 6.5 to help you find the center of the face more. Any speed you lose will be negligible and finding the center of the face will impact spin and total more than anything else. I was not a fan of the hulk, Ventus black has been great and I have the same issues with similar speed.
