questions about tipping and lengthening, and other things...

question 1: i hear alot about tipping a shaft or a lengthening a shaft. My question is what if you have a 45" driver and the length is perfect, but you wanted it just a slightly more stiff. would it be ok to tip a shaft lets say around 1.5" or 2" and at the same time add an extension to lengthen it to the same amount of inches that was tipped in order to keep the same length. or would it be useless and it will mess with the performance too much and will cancel out the desired flex change.?

question 2: what if i reshaft a fairway wood with another shaft, and then decide to go back to the original way it was. would it matter what position the adapter is glued on back to the shaft?

question 3: what if there is a crack on graphite shaft? does it mean its unplayable? and if it is playable is there a way to keep it from causing more damage to the shaft, for example, like putting super glue on the crack, or a strip of strong tape.

question 4: what is hot melt? does it benefit the performance of the club in any way?

Question 5: tiger-stepping shafts, if i were trying to put a iron as one of my wedges to play at regular or regular+ flex, and I play x-stiff shafts, which iron should i use to get to that desired flex or the close it ?

Question 6: is there negative effects for the shaft to be continuously pulled and reshafted?

question 7: any negative effects when it comes to bending to change lofts and then rebending

(LAST opinionated QUESTION: do you think that Reed cheated ?)

plz help, my eyes hurt from all the research but i cant seem to find the right answers

1) yes but 1.5" to 2.0" is large amount to tip. If you only want it slightly stiffer, start with just 1" of tipping. Also, the max amount you can tip is more commonly only about 1-3/4" but can vary from as little as 1". It is really dependent on the length of the parallel tip section (need to check the spec sheet for your shaft) and the bore depth of your head.

2) Shaft orientation and spines and puring is a big can of worms with lots of different opinions. The short answer is that in most cases and for most people it wont matter, but there are always exceptions.

3) If it really is a crack and not just a surface scratch, it usually does mean it's unplayable. But details would be needed on where the crack was and how big. e.g. if it's limited to being near the butt and under the grip and not to big, it may be repairable.

4) it's something that's used to add weight to the head. By itself it doesn't effect performance of the head but the change in weight certainly can effect the feel of the club, your swing and the results. It's really no different than adding lead tape or tip weights to accomplish the same thing.

6) not if it's done properly. Poor techniques can potentially weaken graphite shafts and increase the risk of failure.

7) No. Again, not if done properly.

Tiger may use it, but he didn't invent it. This was a standard clubfitting option from the 1900s. Jack Nicklaus mentions soft-stepping wedges in his 1974 book, Golf My Way.

Most people are playing a driver that's too long for them. Most ams would be much better off with a driver in the 44" range (43.5" to 44.5") and some even shorter than that. Whether you are or not I can't say, but here is a link to a thread that describes how you can fit yourself for playing length (and a few other things). All you need is some lead tape, some foot powder spray (or impact tape) and a bucket of balls at the range. Do this before you do the tipping, choking up to test different lengths.https://forums.golfwrx.com/discussion/909991/diy-driver-tune-up-diy-fitting/p1

  • 1 month later...

quick question, if i have an iron shaft standard length stiff (oban ct-115), and i soft-stepped one time and then trimmed it down half inch short from standard length, since shorter shafts make the shaft more stiff, would that idea just be cancelling each other out leaving me with the same flex shaft before i soft-stepped but now just shorter and slightly lighter? or would it play more soft in regards to flex?

Soft stepping is taking a 7 iron shaft, and putting it on an 8 iron head and playing it at 8 iron length (not playing it at 7 iron length). So the length change is already part of normal soft stepping and the feel changes associated with soft stepping.

Head weight and tip trimming play a much bigger part in how stiff it will feel. Small length changes from different butt end trimming is usually negligible when it comes to feel for most.
