Is One Brand OCD a Thing?

You would hate my wedge set up. Three different manufacturers. Three different finishes. And the gaps don't make any conventional sense. Somehow I make it work.

I'm willing to consider pretty much any OEM and I purchase the best equipment that I can find at the price I am willing to pay for it (which isn't much).

That's the thing though. It's not brand loyalty. How else do I explain the sudden disdain for the Titleist ball that I've played constantly just because I had a matching rental set? And Callaway isn't even my preferred brand, it's just that the bag matched and the ball didn't.

I don't really worry about this. I'm not a pro or anything but I am knocking on the door of a single handicap which makes me able to hang with most golfers I meet on a course and, just as important, recognize if someone else has actual game.

I used to be much worse and did actually hang on to the mantra, "If you can't play, display." so I do get where you're coming from.

I do not see a thing at all wrong if that is what you want. And that is coming from a guy that is brand agnostic and I mean just look at my signature. I not only play a mixed bag but mixed eras as well. Heck I have had a Titleist or Ping bag without either brand in it. I have also been known to wear say wear a Callaway hat and not one piece of their equipment in the bag. Hey honestly I say do what makes you happy. If you are considered OCD well so be it. Well the bag thing sorta drove me nuts too but for different reasons---- I have a Titleist mini staff that is about 12 years old but pristine--- For some reason it attracts attention among the tourist golfers around here. And they really get shocked when they see what is in my signature in there--- I like flying under the radar so to speak--- So I switched to an old Jones Classic or either a pristine old school Burton (non branded) I found at Goodwill. Besides none of my head covers match anyhow. Neither the Jones or Burton draw any attention and I like it like that

Joking aside this really was more the case 10+ years ago when the club companies had a few duds in their releases but some advocates were still going for a full brand bag, now the likes of Titleist/Ping/Callaway/Taylormade/Etc are so good top to bottom it's not as much of a giveaway, it just looks a little hokey when EVERYTHING in and on the bag match.

On the flip side, the dude you absolutely avoided betting at all cost back then was the guy with the 975D driver, Sonartec 3 wood, something like Maxfli Australian Blades or MP33s, usually only one additional wedge that was a Cleveland 588, and some old, beat up 8802-type or bullseye putter. Walk the other way because that guy is listed at a 3 handicap but plays to a +2 or 3.

I do your 56/58 setup. It works for me because the 58 is the most hittable borderline lob wedge and the 56 is just conventional to me. The 56/58 were the most available wedges in the Late 80’s and early 90’s . 54 and 52 is just weird!

Golf OCD, yep. Got it. Bad. There is the 9- or 18-hole day - a bit too AD for 18+ but the intensity of Honey-Do anticipation could mitigate such - whether to ride, push, or carry, and if such with regular or minimal club set-ups for typical or par-3 courses. Got a rig or two for all combinations, and such might mean mix and match clubs with mostly corresponding and totally non-corresponding bags or matchy-matchy OCD clubs, balls, and bag. Gonna do it my way; get pleasure from it. Golf OCD notwithstanding, it's play; it helps me become less adultish and stay as young as I can for as long as I can. As an influential theologian once suggested, and I paraphrase, minimizing play attenuates seriousness. Golf OCD a thing? Sure. No. I don't know. If you got it, causes no harm to yourself or another, and it gives you pleasure, celebrate it.

I’ve got this...bad!

I finally broke down and traded my MP20 MMC’s in for the new P790’s. Too much positive press, and more importantly I ran into two friends (players) who haven’t traded clubs in a year or so and swear by these irons. And both said the new one was even better.

So of course, this meant that I had to buy an M5 driver and an M5 fairway wood, despite the fact the TS3 might be the best driver I’ve ever owned. Plus, the TS3’s allow me to maintain an all Titleist bag with my T100’s.

Now I have to decide if I pick up a couple of the wedges, or conquer my OCD by continuing to play my Vokey.

And the way I am putting, I cannot quit using my Cameron and ProV1X for a TM putter and TP5 ball.

Damn!

I would tend to agree that discounting pros, most of the single OEM bags i've seen belong to guys with handicaps maybe between 5 and 15. It's guys who are just good enough to have a pretty good game but not quite in that elite AM sphere LOL. These are the guys who usually have full Titleist bags and alignment sticks in their bag haha. I don't mean to make fun or anything, people can do what they want with their money, that's just what i feel i've seen

All of the low indexes i know seem to find a few clubs here and there that fit into their bag for whatever reason

I actually played a 1-oem bag for almost a year after the Callaway trip here, but that was because i was fit for stuff and got it for free. Eventually i swapped out the driver for a Ping though for tournaments

The only way this doesn't work for me is if you're deliberately passing up on a golf club that performs better than the alternative, just because the alternative matches the same manufacturer as everything else in the bag. The score on the card is what matters to me, not having my clubs look pretty.

Maybe I'm in the severe minority here, but Golf Clubs are tools to me. My toolbox has a variety of brands based on what my cars require for "special tools" just as my golf bag does.

While for some it is an OCD thing, I believe for most one brand golfers, it is because they've found an OEM they just like the most. This is the closest to a one brand bag I've ever come, but not looking to move to a Ping putter and Ping doesn't make golf balls.

I'm pretty sure I win the mixed bag award. I gave up trying to fit one OEM into my game and found that this makeup gives me the best results. Here's what I am currently playing-

2,4,5 Irons- Ben Hogan Ft.Worth Hi Utility Irons

6,7- Callaway Apex 2019

Putter- Cleveland Frontline

I made an arbitrary decision many years ago to bag TM clubs. Not OCD and not brand loyalty. Just a preference since the talent pool of great clubs is so deep. I have TM clubs in my gamer bag that range from 2006 to 2018.

Everyone has there own set up, which is one of the things that makes golf fun. We play the same courses, but we all do it slightly different.

The one OCD thing that I do totally agree with though is that I need to have at least a club of a manufacturer if I am going to rock their bag. Would just seem weird to me not too.

Yeah that's my problem and why I wonder if this isn't truly OCD and not just a matter of brand preference. In my case, I know that I hit Ping woods and Mizuno irons best. Each is my top performer and most comfortable in terms of feel. But I keep having the recurring thought when I look at the bag that they all need to be one brand and it's bugging me more and more.

Sure, one brand OCD is a thing. I had it for a while.

It can make sense, especially initially. It's easy to conclude that if, say, the irons work well, stands to reason that the hybrids and wedges will... and the woods. They're probably built to have the right gapping vs a mixed set. And hey, they probably are designed using their ball, so there's that too. If pros use all one brand (even if they're paid) it can't be that bad, right? And if you've got a certain OCD, there's always the color coordination thing.

This is a hobby for most, and if that OCD itch has to be scratched, it's a pretty harmless way to do it.

If you are comfortable using one brand then go for it, but if you hit Callaway drivers better than TM then why wouldn't you use what is best for your game. I need to have a club look and feel good to me at address, but I currently have a Callaway driver, Cobra 3 and 5 wood, Callaway irons, and Vokey wedges.

If you're OCD then that could be detrimental if you are like me and have a very comfortable setup with a mixed bag.
