Man some of you guys have some nice pieces!

 

I've got a few watches in the box, but nothing Luxury.

I guess the most high end one I have is a Longines L2 Day/ Date. Man what a cool watch it is

 

In my box

- Longines L2 Dress Watch

- An Orient Mako Diver that I had modified with an AR Double Dome sapphire crystal, a Coin Edge bezel and a ceramic bezel insert. 41mm in Stainless and deep dark blue iridescent dial. Very nice watch!

- An Orient Bambino 42mm Dress watch in Gold Tone with a green iridescent dial with gold indices and hands and a date.

-A Victorianox Diver in Black. 42mm Stanless - Automatic

- Gold Tone Graf Zepplin --- Hindenberg Automatic that has some cool complications on it.

- and last a Seiko Prestige Automatic - Dress Watch in a polished 41mm SS case.

Cool. I wish I could work on em. Watches are like golf clubs, they need to me bent, tweaked, and customized to a person!!

 

Years ago I bought myself a tool kit and a couple of cheap chinese watches to practice on ..... I found out pretty quick I didnt have any talent for working with such tiny fragile things!

I'm still a watch newbie, so take it easy on me if this company is the watch-equivalent of Warrior Custom Golf....https://www.world.holzkern.com/en_world/shop/watches/men.html

Anyone wear one of these? Thoughts? I think they're unique (some to the point of garishness), and I like the price point as a beginner trying to start a very modest entry-level collection.

Whilst I am not too familiar with the Holzkern brand, let me point out a few things that I noticed.

 

First of all, I must say that the wooden look is really not for me.

 

Secondly, you must consider that most of these watches use Seiko Quartz movements. I wouldn't spend 200+ dollars on a quartz watch. To me the beauty of watches lies in their mechanical construction. Whilst these watches may appear affordable, I do not think they are good value for money at all.

 

If I were you, I'd buy an entry-level mechanical watch and see how you feel. Brand-wise I'd have a look at Seiko.

What's your opinion on Montblanc? I've seen some nice looking watches from them in the $1000-1500 range, but I wasn't sure whether their brand is still highly regarded, or whether it has become too mass-market like Movado and others.

I think MB is still a solid option in the price range. They have a lot of really nice designs and to my knowledge use pretty much all in house movements. They have some really unique complications too

Montblanc is a solid choice. Personally, I would prefer a Longines at that price point, though. Some of their vintave-inspired Heritage models are gorgeous.

Longines is fantastic as well. I think MB has more options in the "unique and complicated" category, but Longines are amazing regardless.

I haven’t been in this forum for a while but I’m hoping to get some help finding a sub $1k diver that is actually useable. My wife and I are starting to travel a bit more and I have no desire to take my Speedmaster into the saltwater and sand on our Caribbean trips. Can anyone recommend an automatic, 38-40mm case, functional diver at this price point?

Do you need true dive timing function?

 

When I travel I wear a Seiko diver with a modified bezel insert that is 12 hour, so I still get the toughness of a dive watch with the travel functionality of the 12 hour bezel.

Either way Seiko is a fantastic option under $1k (Shogun, MM200, SKX013 ect)

You could also take a look at top tier Micro brands like Zelos,Astor Bank (12 hour insert), Helson, Ginault, ect)

Seiko is always a fine option and I will definitely start my search there. I’ve seen a few Hamilton Khaki Navy’s and some Oris divers that look interesting but I have zero knowledge of the brands.

I don't know if hammy has a diver in your size range but Oris has a 38mm Aquis. Good brand also.

 

If you don't mind a Homage, I think Ginault makes among the nicest watch under 2k. The bracelet is incredible.

Monta is a killer option just above the 1k range if you go used (like I did)

Yup, that’s pretty much what I’m looking for. It’s funny how you can look so hard even though what you need is right under your nose, lol.

Have you ever heard of the French company Yema? Apparently they have been around since the late 40s and have some good looking automatic divers called the Superman.

Yema has some cool stuff also, Superman is a great watch.

If you want the 12 hour bezel those are few and far between (Nodus, Astor Banks, and NTH are the only brands I can think of that offer a model with one, Im sure there are a few more) unless you go the Seiko Mod route.

You can never go wrong with a GMT II. It's just a matter of preference on what dial a person wants. Batman is really terrific. I am more understated. Mine is simple black and worn every day. Notice the etched Rolex Crown at the 6:00 position?

The laser etching is pretty awesome. They changed the face slightly on the 2019 models. Swiss Made now has a crown between it.
