Does the SM7 really spin THAT much?

Messing around at GG today I wanted to hit a few wedge shots and try out the new T20 wedge from Mizuno. I was just hitting little 3/4 shots about 75 yards and they felt good. I was using the nasty maxfli ball they have and getting around 4000 rpm spin and turning it over a little (my natural 3/4 wedge shot). I then gave the TaylorMade MG2 wedge a go and pretty similar numbers. Finally as a bit of fun I thought I'd try out the SM7 which I don't think I've ever hit. The same shot I was getting around 7500 rpm spin (I kept swapping balls around to make sure there wasn't an outlier or something crazy) and it was traveling far straighter. Maybe the lie angle was a bit flatter.

 

It was those spin numbers that blew me away. No I never tried hitting full shots or with my high spin game ball but the numbers where amazing. On all the online testing you typically see a few hundred rpm between clubs. I wonder if it's that the Vokey generates more spin on half shots that the others?

You made better contact with the SM7, no way you'd see 3500 RPM more spin.

I certainly didn't feel like I was hitting the SM7 any better, in fact I caught one low on the face and still saw 6000 rpm out of it.

SM7 is painfully average and scores that way every year in wedge testing. Especially in spin.

All things equal Vokey SM7 wedges do not spin more than my SM6 wedges, and I spin the ball a great deal. For reference, I have Mizuno and Miura wedges, older Titleist and original Snake Eye wedges with worn faces that are 1018 forged, the softest available and all spin about the same. All my LW's have the same S200 shaft but 52* wedges have different shafts with different tip sections, which may influence numbers.

Half or three-quarter swings and full swings create about the same degree of spin, in my hands. Spin is mostly about how hard and fast the club face impacts the ball.

I agree with this. Maybe not a "better" strike, but the bounce/grind or any number of other factors could cause you to strike a bit low off of mats, and low strikes = more spin which can absolutely cause spin to fluctuate by thousands. The SM7 most certainly does not spin 3,500rpm more, nor does it spin appreciably any more or less than any other modern wedge under normal circumstances.
