Is Abraham Ancer eligible to play for U.S. in Ryder/Presidents Cup?

The USA once just played England, Scotland, and Ireland. I think it was Nicklaus who conceded to allow Continental Europe to be included. So the idea of including Canada and Central, South America seems fair to me. But we have such an amazing amount of talent already. I really think it was wrong for Ancer to play for the international team. I bet he used USA funding for college, any takers? He was a first team all American, hmm! Should not have played!

Yeah, that is some weird logic. So any one who has received grants in college but non US, should swear their fealty to their mighty lords? I'm American BTW. Just seems kinda silly though because he received funding he should no longer be Mexican.

That’s just it though. Wasn’t he born in the Us? He’s no more Mexican than american. He’s equal both yes ? Mexican because his parents were natural citizens , and a natural citizen of the us by birth.

 

I don’t expect him to not be either. But he could have chose either and been perfectly , equally , correct.

The President's Cup is owned by the PGA Tour. The Ryder Cup is owned by the PGA of America. One has nothing to do with the other.

 

Mexico has both jus soli and jus sanguinis, so he has dual citizenship.

Sort of. Lots of Mexican nationals have residences in both Reynosa and the Texas upper valley. Ancer went to high school here in the valley. The border is very fluid down here. Folks go back and forth to work/go to school/live all the time.

The borders are all muddied anyway. Many of the International and Euro team members went to college in the USA and live in Orlando. Citizenship and residency don't really matter. We could just line up 24 guys, select 2 captains and pick teams and play!

That's not a bad idea, but for fans it's not as fun to cheer for, since when it involves patriotism we get more united (not sure how it works for the international side I guess it's like a UN kind of situation).

Just a picky thought, but not sure the PGA "owns" the Ryder Cup - I think it's a contractual joint venture, but the PGA controls everything from the USA side of things. Been trying to research that lately and not getting the specifics I'd hope for.

I was listening to the SiriusXM PGATOUR golf channel the day after the President's cup and they were making comment on Ernie's suggestions about changes in the way the cup is run, etc, to make it more competitive (one answer the announcers gave was...."perhaps they could play better?"). And the discussion (some of the announcers are ex-PGATour players) went on to say, which I didn't know, that the Ryder Cup is 'owned' by PGA of America (and not sure who else?...R&A?) while the President's Cup is wholly owned (all revenue) by the PGATour, and the PGATour was not about to relinquish any of that cashcow to go anywhere except in their pockets (as a means of dispelling changes offered by Ernie). I didn't know those two organizations 'owned' those cups and the revenue derived from them.

No he didn't.

 

He moved to Reynosa shortly after his birth and at 14 moved over to Mission, Texas. To me that's growing up in Mexico --- it's not misleading.

And what kind of stupid, crass post is that anyway --- "ole sneak him into the U.S." - you don't know a damn thing about what his family did or why his mother gave birth in the U.S.

You want to argue about what growing up means, I don't care. From birth to 14 gets him 4 years from being an adult - you define it however you want.

It's a joint venture of the PGA of America and Ryder Cup Europe.

The Ryder Cup Europe splits the revenue when in Europe between the European Tour and the PGA of Great Britain and Ireland.

The PGA of America has the revenue when played in the US.

The revenue from the Ryder Cup is a secret. None of the entities will disclose how much money it brings in or the profit.

It is also similar in the Northern part of the US too. I learned this in my trucking days. A lot of folks hold dual Canadian and US citizen ships up there due to marriage or whatever. I know some guys in the trucking business were Canadian by birth but have dual citizen ship and have their LLC in the US and own property in both countries. I asked a guy one time up there that owned 6 trucks about taxes. He files his taxes for his LLC in the US and writes himself a paycheck and his personal taxes he files in Canada. He laughs and says he has no problems because that way both countries are getting a piece of his pie.
