Just watched the video again a few times. Part of his routine is to watch the club go back in his “pump practice swing.” Very easy for him to not see the sand move with his eyes on the club head. Watch the actual footage, not the extreme close up and it doesn’t even look like his lie got better. And remember, it’s a waste area so a players attention may not be on avoiding touching the sand as it’s allowed.

infraction yes, but no way an obvious cheat...

I’m almost surprised it was noticed.

 

Never a Reed fan but I’d give him the benefit of the doubt here.

So a golfer who has played and practiced out of bunkers and waste bunkers hundreds of times wouldn't know what would happen to his lie with those types of actions because he wasn't looking at the ball while he was doing it?

I know you are an ex mini tour player like I am so we can relate. Last night another friend of mine and I were discussing the incident over the phone. We were not there in person but according to the video we saw we tend to think he was cheating. My friend asked me what I would have done? I told him in that case I would have first called my playing competitor over and showed him what was going on and advised him of what I would do. Even in the waste bunker if you had grounded the club IMHO it would have improved that lie technically speaking. I told my bud I would have taken my 56* and played it like a green side bunker shot to avoid any hint of impropriety. Something my old man taught me ( he was a club pro) was to always square my actions with my fellow competitors and avoid any impropriety. So my actions and opinions in that case may have been overkill but I can look in the mirror when shaving every morning.

So are you saying you think that he intentionally improved his lie and that’s how he cheated or that he accidentally improved his lie and Cheated because he didn’t call a penalty on himself?

But you are specifically allowed to lightly ground your club, either immediate in front of or behind the ball, even if doing so improves the conditions affecting the stroke. Obviously Reed did more than that, he moved a noticeable amount of sand with two separate practice backswings.

LOL.....he moved two large swaths of sand. He took the first swipe and the moved the club closer to him and did it again to take care of the rest. Afterwards, even if you claim to have somehow not seen it when you address the ball it was obvious the mound of sand was no longer there.

Yep and my mind keeps going back to the fact that it’s happening out in the open and with a close up cam on his butt. Who scoops out sand like that knowing full well that it’s in full view ? The real cheats I know all try to be covert.

Several posters accused me of being a cheater... One went so far as to say and I Quote "wouldn't want to play with you"

He took practice swings and took a look again after. He didn't notice his lie improved?

If he didn't know the rule and thoughthe could clean/improve without penalty, he would have gone the Kuchar route and used his hands.

 

He was doing a waste bunker version of the place a wood behind the ball in the rough then eventually hit an iron.

I actually agree with this. This whole put the putter literally touching my shirt but hey, i'm not really anchoring is ridiculous. How is anyone supposed to be able to tell either way. They need to amend the rule so that there's clearly a gap showing or something along those lines.

My question still is...if Reed knew he was cheating, why would he do it with a camera right there? And no, "Because he is stupid", is not a valid answer. :-)

I am not defending him, I just haven't seen anyone answer this question.

anyone caught cheating at my golf club is gone for 3 months first time, and second time they're gone for good. Just a regular old golf club. Then out here on tour he doesn't even get a suspension...?

 

get rid of him for a few months and let some of the young blokes coming through the ranks have a shot at making it
