Thrift Store Jackpot

Recommended Posts

Underrated clubs, IMHO - they seemed to be an early attempt at developing an iron for less than stellar abilities. Personally, I loved the weighting across the center of the back of the club. That factor could actually help flight the ball down a bit without an alteration to the swing. I'll keep my eyes open for your 9-iron.

  • 3 weeks later...

Spalding Custom Made. Picked these up at Goodwill the other day, took a little while to figure out they say "Raveneaux", a local country club in north Houston. Anyone know if these are cast or forged? I hit one a little bit and can't say I was too impressed. Actually, I only had one shot that felt like it hit the sweet spot. It's an incomplete set (sometimes I think GW does that on purpose) but someone at Raveneaux may be interested in them.

Any idea what the "49" means?

I mentioned this in another thread but have any of y'all checked out the Stacked Golf channel on Youtube? It features a fun younger married couple hitting up thrift stores, yard sales, etc. finding golf clubs and golf-related items. They also do some on-course vlogs. Found it quick-moving, breezy, and interesting. It's not all hidden gems and fantastic finds which is true of those who "thrift"...it's often right place/right time!

Just watched about a half hour's worth of their videos. It's a fun idea, but you can only buy so many current issue golf clubs that it's going to get stale in a hurry. Obviously the guy is a good player, but his wife is really the personality so maybe she needs to have a bigger role than handing out the coin.

RREAS1MLNWUS.jpgThe travel bag was full of old wedges and 1 irons. Not pictured is a Ping Eye 2 BeCu 1 iron. Lots of woods. Still need to clean up most of it. All found in a dumpster that I have been picking since this summer. A guy told me about this dumpster and its been very good to me. He might be regretting that now. All of this was found at the same time. I check every week and its very hit and miss. Obviously this was one of the better trips I had. Love the full set of Hogan Medallions including Driver thru 7 wood. They are all ladies flex unfortunately. Both bags are Hogan also!

I tell from experience and I sorta know history. The one pictured above is identical to my Sun Mountain one but mine does not have Ping logos. Sun Mountain in those days was one of a few bag manufacturers and they were geared to the walking market and they were one of the first if not the first to make a lightweight nylon and plastic "walking bags". true other manufacturers in those days like Miller and Burton made walking bags and they were lighter than a staff bag but were still made of heavier materials. Back in my high school days in the 70s the Hogan Sun Jet and the Hot Z bags were the lightest. Most of the big companies in the 70s their bags were either made by Burton or Miller. I do not know who made the Wilson Staff bags but they were built excellently well and they were heavy as a Mack truck. Also back in those days another popular walking bag were the Spalding white canvas ones which were light. I had an older Spalding one Lord only knows where it came from but I just had to have one of those little red white and blue Hogan Sun Jets. Learned another valuable lesson. Remember my old man ran a course and I had my own riding cart. Those Sun Jet bags were not made to hold up on a riding cart. I wore my out around where the stand and strap goes around the bag. My old man stated as only he could " that is why they are called WALKING BAGS" I ended up getting a red Hot Z since that is what the old man sold in his shop. I solved the cart problem too. I had an old Maxfli leather staff bag I put on my cart. I had enough balls tees and gloves all I had to do was switch my clubs to my Hot Z for school matches walking. The Hogan Sun Jet I gave to a less fortunate bud of mine on the team and he and his Dad patched it with duct tape and he carried it for quite a few years. My old man stated well I could have done the same thing but back in those days I HAD to have everything just so.

Yes, I can't quite decide whether I love them or hate them. On the one hand, they're my type of people...on the other hand, they're just so darn peppy and exuberant. For Youtube golf vids, I prefer the dry snark of Liam Harrison or Mr. Shortgame...but, only Stacked specializes in thrift shopping, so I watch 'em.
Anyway, I see that @timbodtc posted some Citation woods above...Are those any good? There's at least a driver hanging in the golf club bin at one of the local thrifties, but I honestly don't know enough about old clubs to make an assessment.
