pgatour has a toggle to change from event time to the our time. i hope that feature remains on all their leaderboards. it's always so annoying when my guy tees off at 8:34 and check at 8:38 to see where the first tee shot landed and the guys at 7:42 haven't teed off because i forget ohio or wherever is central time.

I just turned it on a few minutes ago.

Right during a block of five commercials.

They then showed 4 of the exact same tee shot on a seemingly boring par 3 Then covered Li screwing around over one fairway shot.

Then back to a block of FIVE commercials.

Then seven putts in a row.

And now back to commercials.

Nope, I dont love golf this much.

In a five minute stretch I saw more commercials for Aston Martin - two - then I saw golf shots - zero.

All kidding aside, the commercials definitely ruined the viewing for me. It seemed like whenever anything good was going on, they were in split screen. Or else they were in commercials altogether. I ended up pausing the DVR and letting about an hour of golf record before I went back to watch it. Just an awful job by the Golf Channel.

They had years to plan for this. How is it possible they could not find sponsors - like the Fox golf coverage does - to sponsor an hour of commercial free golf? If nothing else then during the last couple hours? They certainly ran enough commercials, it probably wouldn't have even cost anymore to do it that way. When they were down to the last couple of deciding matches they went to a commercial break, right as Finau was getting ready to tee of on 18 - missed the tee shots and everything. Absolutely maddening.

Also, half the commercials seemed to be for the Kapalua event or the Tour Championship - or other GC programming. Terrible job top to bottom.

Sidenote - they wouldnt stop talking about how this is one of the greatest tournament courses in the world. Can it be considered one of the greatest tournament courses in the world when its actually 12 holes from one course and 6 holes from another course? I dont even know how that works - if you go to RM to play golf, do you get to play that composite course or are you just playing the West or East course and you hope you recognize some of the holes that are out there?

I watched almost all the golf. I thought the golf and the course were both great. Better than the Ryder cup by far.

The course was pretty sweet. One thing I really noticed is that it actually paid to come from certain angles and hit certain shot shapes. On 18 you wanted to be on the right side of the fairway then draw it in to that pin. There are plenty of soft courses where it wouldn’t matter because you could fly it over the bunker to the short pin and still keep it close.

I put a moratorium on the word “firm” leading up to the event, but that really seemed to be the right word in the end. Guys that could shape it really seemed to do well.

Yup. I was just going to say the same thing. It was better than the 2018 Ryder cup by far, not all of them.

The course was great. The time difference was PERFECT (can't be overstated). There was just enough "controversy" with all the Reed stuff. There were TONS of good shots and putts.

The US being heavy favorites but but being down -- but withing striking distance -- for 3 days gave it an air of excitement. Great, memorable tournament.

 

(side plot : Looks like Kent01Putt fell victim to the same inability to reset as did 2MoreTerps. They're literally the two people I would have bet on to be unable to handle the change. I'm not sure I ever put it together, but 2MoreTerpZ is totally just Young Kent (although last I heard he was thinking about getting Venmo)).

I don't think the Golf Channel could have ever predicted the closeness, and eventual comeback, of the event. The US team hadn't trailed in so long, it was almost a forgone conclusion it would be a rout. Given that, low ratings were expected, I'm sure. Hard to sell advertising for a boring event. And might as well promote your own events to fill gaps. I've never felt that GC's coverage is all that, but this weekend they worked with what they had. Solid C or B-, just show me some more shots!!!!!

I stayed up late on Saturday to watch the President's Cup and agree that the event was great, but the coverage was terrible. It was hard to stay with it and follow the match with all the commercials and I think the "playing through" split screen is worse than just going to commercial and then coming back and showing us key shots slightly delayed.

OK but they still sold the commercial time. Instead of selling 100 ad clips to Aston Martin why not have just sold them the last hour of uninterrupted coverage? Literally the second Finau stepped on the tee box on 18, in what was a really important match - they cut to a block of 6 commercials. What?

How is it possible Fox can figure this out for obscure - to most of the public - amateur events but TGC cant figure it out for one of their premier international events?

I finally got out to the range for an hour yesterday, its been way too long. Beautiful day and I just couldnt pass it up given the cold weather coming in this week. MV redid their range at some point in the last couple months, new layout with new mats and they finally had to tarp over the bermuda tee. Fantastic day to be outside.

for what's worth* i instantly knew the answer was rolex. and i didn't watch that much coverage of the am.

 

*so what IS it worth? i remember because i wondered how in the world it could make finanical sense for rolex to sponsor uninterrupted coverage of the US AM on Fox. Like they are actually getting a legit return on that? Maybe it's because for a brand like that (niche, luxury, i assume extraordinary margins) it's not about a specific advertisement driving sales but more of creating/maintaining an awareness and even an ethos of your product. uniterrupted coverage + amateur golf + beautiful scenes does kinda fit for rolex. and the audience should certainly be a good one for rolex. i googled their deal and no financial terms were disclosed

Yesterday I got out to Brambleton with Christian and Young. It was very moist out there, but the weather was pretty solid for mid-December. It was great to get out there and slap the ball around a bit. I don't have much to report back on in regards to golf.

We got paired with a rando and he started talking about the President's Cup when we were on the 2nd green. He mentioned something about his DVR cutting out and he couldn't see the end of the recording. So he keeps talking and asks "do you know how foursomes ended up?" I waited for Young to finish putting, started racking my brain as I was hungover and confused at the question at hand, and then I looked up and said "I have no clue but we crushed it in singles." Then he retorts back "HELLO, SPOILER ALERT!! I have it recorded."

This ain't Game Of Thrones, bruh. It was a live sporting event that ended at 11:40pm the night before. Then you go to a golf course and think you're going to avoid hearing final results.
