Still getting screwed up with weaker lofts

The title pretty much says it all. After using Cobra Amp Cell irons for many years and going to Ping i25's, I'm still getting screwed up with the weaker lofts (-3*/a full club difference). I find myself pulling the wrong club still. It's been a couple months since getting the Pings and I still find myself standing on a hole and grabbing my 7 iron for the 170 shot into the green as opposed to now a 6 iron d/t the weaker lofts. Maybe this shouldn't have been in the equipment forum but i'm sure there are others.

Has anyone strengthen their lofts back to what you were familiar with? I don't think I want to do that, but figured i'd ask.

I guess just paying more attention is the key.

I wouldn’t bend them more than a degree or 2 because after that, you start to mess with bounce, turf interaction, and offset

If you like the irons otherwise, I'd give them a little more time. You'll get used to your new carry distances. Might be worth creating a cheat sheet with your new carry yardages to check before each shot. Just having something visual may help you be more comfortable with your club selection.

No problem here with the stronger lofts, after a couple of rounds you should be able to remember the new yardage for each club. If not than as suggested create a little cheat sheet until your memory takes over.

I own 6 sets of irons. It’s a sickness more than anything. The lofts swing wildly depending on iron. PW could be 44,45,46, or 48. Eventually you will get used to the distances produced. loft as well as club head (SGI, Gi, CB, blade) shaft length, and spin characteristics of your swing will all effect your distance. I think the main reason it throws us off our game is just a slight bit of ego. I’m assuming your not nuking the ball over the green when you miss but coming up way short? So, when we sit 140 yards from the pin and think I’m not hitting an easy 8! I used to hit a Pw no problem it’s all mental

eventually you will adapt to your new yardages. If you experiment with a half set of 8/9 clubs total you will be forced to hit knockdown and half swings as well as full swings. This will help you become more versatile with club and yardage.

don’t bend your clubs that much. You will jack up your bounce and offset. You’ll regret it. My two cents.

Most of my irons in my basement are usually 3-PW where the 3 iron is usually 21 deg and my PW is 48d. My oldest set is my 1971 Wilson Staff Buttonbacks and it's a 2-PW where the club is 1 club weaker than that (PW is the loft of a modern gap wedge at 52 deg and the 9 iron is 48d). I get a little confused at first but I deal with it by simply taking out my existing gap wedge if I play with that set. I don't like bending the lofts on any of my clubs since I want to play them as it was originally designed for.

When you've played the same irons for a long time, grabbing an iron to hit a certain distance becomes more habitual than a matter of thought. To break the old habit and get used to the distances you hit the new irons requires that you break the habit. The easiest way is to ask yourself a question--the brain will override the old habit and search out the correct answer.

 

So, try this the next time you play. Determine your yardage (say 170 yards) and ask yourself, "What iron do I hit 170 yards?" You will answer yourself. "With my new irons, I need to hit a 6 iron."

 

I guarantee that if you do this for a couple of rounds, you will quit grabbing the wrong iron. Before long, it will be second nature to grab the correct iron from your new set.

As someone else here said, bending your irons stronger is going to take bounce out of them. That's either going to be helpful to your game, or hurtful (I'm guessing the latter, unless you've always preferred a more prominent leading edge).

Otherwise, sounds like a little range time to remind yourself of your distances with these clubs will help you get reprogrammed.
