Miura PP 9003 still relevant?

HL69

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am planning on buying a new set of clubs and stumbled upon PP 9003 on 2ndswing. I currently play the CB 202 and wonder what to expect regarding forgiveness and if the PP 9003 still are relevant or if I should look at clubs with more technology such as i500, G 410 or some recent Mizuno offering.

I hoover around 7-9 in hcp and have always played ”low tech” clubs such as Ping eye 2, Titelist DCI 990, Mizuno MP 57, Mizuno MP 5 and now the CB 202. My iron play is ok for my HCP. I am looking for more forgiveness in a club. Swing speed for 7 iron is about 82 mph and i hit it about 160-165 yds.

PP9003 was my first jdm purchase. I still like them today but honestly, it's not my first choice set any more. I do believe though that, with the possible exception of the Ping Eye2, they're the most forgiving of the clubs you listed.

Not sure what "relevant" means in the context of golf clubs but from my experience the PP-9003 are very nice. They are midsized heads so there is some decent forgiveness, and because they are solid one piece clubs the feel is excellent. There are longer clubs out there but that's not the point with a club like the PP's. Define what you want and then choose accordingly.

Thanks for your answer. I am looking for a bit more forgiving club. Added distance is of minor importance. Since that i am not able to hit the PP 9003 i wanted some opinions of their forgiveness compared to my previous clubs and some more modern versions using tungsten, hollow club face and other material/technology.

Thanks for you input it helped alot. Any particular reason the PP is not your first choise?

I'll give you my "Inside" opinion.... I worked for Miura for 10 years as a club fitter/builder.....h'cap +2 to 3. I played every model that Miura made during those years, from Baby Blades to the latest Genesis 9005.

If I was going to go back to playing Miura clubs I would get a set of PP 9003's and never look back ...... I played my best golf with them and loved them. :taunt:

Switched my whole bag to Yonex..... I had been a long time Yonex player before working for Miura so I just went back to them. Love their clubs!

I had 2 other JDM irons at that time; when my swing was not spot on, I preferred the Epon 503s. When my swing was great, I liked bagging Epon Personals 2. PP9003 just kind of got caught in the middle for me. If I didn't have either the 503 or the P2, I don't doubt I would have played it more as I certainly enjoyed it before the Epons arrived (and still enjoy them now, albeit on the driving range mostly).

Hey, just wanted to say that thanks as, because of your comment, I gave the PP-9003s another shot and I can say they're a lot better today than before. I think it was probably just too early for me to have gotten them as I was generally shooting between 90-100 when I bought them. Now that I'm a better ball striker I appreciate them a lot more (had a few range sessions with them).

Not sure if I'd take them out on the course yet as they're still less forgiving than my Hot Metal Pros (I'm not sure if they're shorter as the HMPs have 2 degrees of loft on the 9003s) but they feel a heck of a lot better.

Just saw that this thread was active again, so I'll throw in my latest $.02 worth. I was at the range yesterday when I saw the guy who bought my last set of PP 9003 SN from me a few years ago....we chatted as we hit balls and I asked if I could re-try my old irons.....sure!!

After about 10-15 balls I almost regretted getting rid of them...... They are not only still relevant they are still one of the best irons you can buy..... I could go back to them without a second thought.

I play a set of Miura Passing Point Straight Necks and love them. Between these and my 2011 Onoff CB's, nothing will rid these out of my bags.

In fact, I have a set new set Miura PP SN heads as a back-up. That's how great they are!!

Chip Usher golf, ebay seller chipaputt, is blowing out PP-9003 sets including lots of straight necks. Not dirt cheap in the purest sense but very fair prices for Muira's. I couldn't hold back and ordered a 5-PW set last night. I had some of the Muira Giken 9003's a while back and had fond memories so figured, why not? I already have a nice set of Recoil 95 pulls in the garage just waiting. Good fun.

BUMP to say I recently acquired a set of PP-9003 SNs in VGC.  They have gone straight into my bag this season ahead of my CB-501s and iBlades.

I wouldn't say the heads are oversize in real life - they are obviously bigger than most blades but are not quite as big as I was expecting (in a good way) - they look tidy and blade-like at address.  Good strikes feel amazing, and they fly really straight for me.  I've never been a big believer in the idea that iron tech gets better every year, and these are all the club I need.  Delighted with them!
