New speed training ?????

Recommended Posts

So i bought one of those cheap resistance fans off the bay and naturally it broke like 4 days into use. So it got me thinking. I had a old cally FT9 driver laying around and i took a pool noodle cut it a the length of the shaft from hozel to grip bottom and used some 200 mph tape on it just to snug it up enough. I practiced with this 3 times a day 40 to 50 swings full throttle in 7 days time i gained almost 9mph of club head speed and even my shot dispersion is tighter than ever i went from a club head average of 99.8 to 108.6 consistently and smash factor went up from avg 141 to 148 even a couple 150s . Im sure some of you out there have figured this out but guys its easy and literally cost me 4$ and about a hour of my time each day. Love to hear thoughts and hope this helps.

My basics for speed maintenance is swing a heavy club in my non dominant direction and an alignment stick in my dominant direction. I learned this because I used to play right handed and I always noticed that if my right hand swing was tight that my left handed swing felt great and vice versa. With that in mind I swing the heavy club right handed to strengthen those muscles and to maintain muscle balance within the body. I then swing an alignment stick left handed for over speed training.

The objective is to maintain speed and minimize losses due to getting older because once you are past your athletic peak there is no more speed to be gained but you can recover some lost performance and shallow out the curve of natural loss of speed as you age. I was swinging at 129 mph in my late 20's, and now at 39 I am at 120 -123 mph, however I will likely never swing anywhere close to 129 again without major dedication and extra fitness training, but 123 is plenty of speed and I hit it better now with less perceived effort than ever so I will take that trade off. My current swing is much less damaging to my body so I think I will be able to maintain my current speed for much longer also

I agree ive made some swing changes over the last six months prior to the changes i was swinging around 110 but it killed my back and was very inconsistant. So i started working in some things and have a much better swing for my body and my game but with this new swing i could barely break 100 which made no sense when i use to swing 110 could even reach 116 if i really gassed it. But using the little training aid i made a commiting to my swing changes i managed to get back up to 109 and only feel like im swinging 80% so i know i still got some speed on the table up for grabs. With the new swing changes i dropped my hcp from 11.4 to 5.8 in six-months. So you think i should practice these swings with the resistance righty and the under weight lefty?

The 109 swing speed was recorded a week into the training at golftec using their launch monitor. Now mind you that was 3 weeks ago. I feel like im fastee now after the 30 days than i did at a week but i have not had the chance to get back on the monitor. Juat thought this could help some of you out there seeking more speed it has greatly helped me thats for sure

If you are a righty golfer then you want to swing the heavy club lefty and something lighter than your golf club righty. This will create balance between the right and left side of your body and it will teach the righty swing the coordination to be faster right handed. General fitness movements such as dead lifts will create stability so that you can manage the added demand. Just as important as creating the speed is the body's ability to slow down after the speed has been created. If the body can't handle the extra speed then injury is following close behind. I don't do heavy swings in my dominant direction because that will recruit slow twitch muscle fibers and will make you actually slower. Now if you were working on slow motion stability movements with a heavy club in your dominant direction, that could be beneficial. Just know that you are not actually gaining speed...you are recovering lost performance and the goal is to recover as much of it as possible and shallow the inevitable loss of speed due to aging that we will all face through some type of physical fitness and range of motion program. Best of luck.
