Re the C Tapers, I've got a Vapor Fly Pro 2 iron with a 120 S fitted, and overall thoughts would be - feels great when hit out the middle, boardy as hell when you don't. Play similar stiffness to S400s, put less spin on the ball and have an appealing flat trajectory. However if you suffer from golfer's elbow avoid, I can only hit 4 or 5 at the range before the aching starts.

I'd still go S400 every time, but you can probably guess that by now ?

In preparation for this 3 iron turning up, I've turned to tinkering with my bag set up, and primarily the wedges. Currently play 47 PW, then 50/54/58, but wondering if that's too much choice, and am thinking about getting the PW knocked a degree weak to 48 degrees, then either going to the 54 and 58, or picking up and RTX 4 Raw and going 52 /56. Still love the Engages but any 52 degree I can find will be worn out by now, and the Clevelands seem to have the same heavy feel as the Nikes. The S400 TI as standard makes them fairly incredible value as well.

Both my courses are under water at the minute, so my credit card is getting worried ?

I just ordered a pair of RTX 4 Forged wedges: 52* and 58*. I ordered them both at 35.5 inches and with s400 (not Ti), as the s200 is standard here. I tried them extensively in the shop and decided they were worth a go to replace my rather worn MD2 wedges.

I'll be playing these with a 47* PW.

Might have the chance to hit the Cobras/C-Tapers on Wednesday...fingers-crossed! The flatter trajectory really appeals...I still hit moon balls with 4-iron, I mean pitch...hop...stop which is usually fine. Just be nice to try something a bit different. I’ll report back.

Wedge-wise I have gone 46*PW with 50-54-58 and the gapping works just fine with just the right amount of overlap between all 4. My gapping at the other end of the bag is pretty fixed with a 3-hybrid interchangeable with a 5-wood being the only tinkering I do now. I have a Nike Forged VR 58* that sometimes gets a spin (!) at the range but it is badly in need of a re-grip...it still chews the covers off balls even now! With my back up MacGregor bag, the PW is 47* and I sometimes go 52-58...I just have to play more feather shots with the 52 which makes the 50-54-58 better in my main bag.

I've only played 9 holes in the last month...my course underwater too :-(

Those Cobras look rather lovely. If I didn't already have a ton of sets, and 986 Tours for the no offset feel/look, I might be interested in a set of these. If they ever come to retail, that is.

Great fun.

Could be the shaft. Night and day for me. Had a set with $Taper and couldn't vibe with them at all. Back to X100 and they're not issue at all. They do spin a lot and the long irons tend to be a bit erratic with ballspeed even when struck well. Considering going to another direction but unsure as of yet. They're great irons.

The picture of the back of the iron reminded me a lot of the Dunlop TM-92 Australian Blade. And that's not a bad thing.

The shaved top line is interesting, and what is probably a tungsten toe plug is visible in one picture. I wonder if they took weight from the top to put the toe-plug in.

I wouldn't think there's enough weight in the shaved topline to merit the necessity of the plug. I expect that's keeping with the Cobra trend in Rickie's irons, and at least partially due to Rickie playing his irons a half inch short. Maybe even chasing a slightly higher swingweight?

I think it's also a "move CG farther from hosel" thing. In this case, the marketing (moving CG) is actually accurate. LOL

These are sweet looking. I have MP 14's that I have played since 1999. I want to have them refinished but I don't want to be without them. I use almost daily. They are pretty beat up looking now. I also have a set of MP 69's but I like the 14's much better. The 69's feel awesome but my swing is so grooved to the 14's I can't change.

I'm a 2 handicap but wasn't always. I learned on blades and had them from the start. I have hit a few C.B. irons over the years but they just look like mallets to me. I always get worried that a C.B. iron would make my swing lazy or sloppy. I hit the sweet spot almost every time and when I don't I know it. I'm afraid if I started hitting the C.B.'s off the toe or heal I wouldn't know it and not make the adjustment.

I have nothing against C.B. irons. If you want to play them it's fine by me. Whatever works for you. I'm sure I would hit a C.B. iron further. I do give up a lot of distance with the 14's. Weaker lofts and flat lie angles. I hit a 6 where most people hit an 8 iron.

I could switch to the 69's if I weakened the loft and lie angles but what is the point of that? I'll just stick to the 14's if I was gonna do that.

I love Mizuno blades. Always have played them for a long time now.

Have you tried the MP 20s? They're almost identical looking to the 14s. If you do try them, keep in mind the 20s are 1/4" longer if you don't custom order them.

I actually didn't realize the 20s were longer until I went to reshaft. But it made sense bc when I first held the 20s I could've sworn they felt longer. I chalked it up to my long layoff.

Mp33 8 iron is 36.25" whereas the mp20 8 iron is 36.5" standard

Yeah I see that too. Like the shaved top line me think it's more an aesthetic. The tungsten is becoming common, kind of wish someone would offer it with variable options. Say an option of higher and heel bound and one lower toe bound. Do what Ping can do with BP just with tungsten before finishing of plate.

The thing that stands out is the proportion of shank to head. Shank looks thick relatively. Is that because lack of offset? Is that and the Tungsten in toe the"GI" of them? I would love to have these in my hand to investigate. Snazzy bling there.

Instead of refinishing your current set of MP14s, you may be better off finding another set. It would be considerably cheaper, quite frankly, and you wouldn't have to worry about headweights getting too light from any grinding done in the refinish, or other possible refinish issues.

It might be harder to find MP14s, but they're out there. Still see them from time to time on fleabay.

As for distance comparatives.... the MP14s aren't actually shorter. They seem shorter due to people placing an importance on the club number, but when you look at the distance per loft, it's in the correct zipcode. The club number is completely irrelevant, it's just a reference of convenience. It's still the player's swing and the loft that determines the distance a player hits the ball (aside from obvious spin rates, wind, blah blah blah). All the crap you hear in iron marketing about strengthening the loft due to CG changes (and other blather), is just that, crap. Your 34* blade will still hit the ball X far, regardless of whether it says 6, 7, or 8 on the sole.

Side note: lie angle won't affect your distance.

Soapbox comments aside, if you like the MP14s, you're probably better off sticking with them. They have a lower CG than almost everything else on the market these days, changing to something else could/would cause you a fair amount of adjustment. They're still a very worthy club. MP33s might be somewhat close, albeit with a different head shape, but not quite the same.

caveat: I admit to a slight bias as MP14s were the clubs that demonstrated to me that I could play blades, in spite of everyone saying I was crazy. Kind of wish I'd gotten a set.

My first thought was that they were dead ringers for the old Aussie Blades. Not a bad thing in the slightest as you say.

Well actually, my first thought was "When can I have a set?", so probably my second thought, strictly speaking ?

I have also just picked up my new driving iron. Just having a beer then going to the range to have a play, but first thoughts are that it's stunning. Suitably butter knife like, but has a decent sized blade and the weight looks to be in the right place. I suspect I'm going to have a lot of fun with this - pics and review to follow...

I am definitely thinking this is a big part of it. Need to spend more time on the range with them. I also want to tweak the lofts a little.

Totally makes sense, I hear what you are saying. I know the lie angle does not affect distance but it does affect the swing. I like them flatter by at least two degrees from the current specs of the 69's. When I got them, honestly I really didn't look at that but it affected my swing some so I haven't touched them in two years. I should just have them bent the 2 degrees and get on with it. The clubs are in great shape and when I hit them for awhile they felt awesome.

I have considered that with the 14's. Buying another set but then I think, why don't I just get the 69's to the specs I want and use them, since I already own them. The other issue is that I switched to a regular shaft flex this past year from stiff. At 56 I just felt it was time to go back. I was losing a little distance. It has helped a great deal and they feel a little more friendly these days. So I would have to have the 69's reshafted also . So after all that Buying another set of 14's might even be cheaper than doing all that.

So as promised, the new driving iron.

6DDBNE3BNC6J.jpgYeah it's beautiful. Very similar to the VR Pros I've matched it with, even looks identical over the ball, save for the extra grooves on the Nike. Bought it standard loft and lie, half an inch long with an S400 TI, same as the Nikes, and it is very difficult to tell its from a different manufacturer.

Performance seems absolutely spot on. Took it to the range last night, and using Toptracer it was going around 195 - exactly 10 more than my 4 iron and 10 less than my hybrid, so exactly what I was looking for. The tracer at the range I use tends to underestimate distance a bit, so I'm fairly confident that will translate to around 220 on the course, so perfect.

That was borne out by a quick 9 I've just finished. Course was remarkably dry, although we were on temporary greens so was playing a bit shorter than usual. Still apart from the 1st tee, where I carved it left a tad, it performed really well. Proper fairway finder, and playing it off the deck back in my stance a little made for some pretty consistent stingers.

Finished 1 under too, so a pretty successful afternoon.

Question for the 3-wedge guys:

My Hogan channelbacks are in 3-E(PW) and I just got them measured again at the end of season. Starting from 3i upwards, I have 23.5, 26.5, 30.5, 34.5, 38, 42, 46, 50. I treat it like a 4-GW set because the distances are comparable to modern lofts (210-126yd carry). I'll probably get the half degrees bent slightly strong to round out the set to whole numbers.

With that configuration, going 54-12 58-08 for sand and lob makes the most sense to me. Have any of you had an issue with using a high bounce 54 for bunker play? I'm not opposed to going 56 60 if that's the case .

Question About Bending Mizuno Blades ...

I would like to close the gap between my PW (MP-20) and 54 degree wedge by bending the Mizuno PW two degrees weak (to 48) and the 9 iron one degree weak (to 43). I know this will affect bounce (add) and offset (subtract) but I'm wondering about the actual impact -- from those who have done this -- on the integrity and playability of the iron. I have never changed lofts on a club by more than one degree.

Thoughts?

I've done almost exactly what you describe with several sets of Ram Tour Grinds and a set of Mizuno MS-11s. The Rams are 1* to 2* weak, some of them possibly more, and the Mizunos are 2* weak in the 5-PW. I found no playability issues in doing so.

You'll have to adjust your thinking, however, about distance and trajectory. If you think about those in terms of the lofts, instead of the club numbers, adjusting will be easier.

Thanks, and good point. The PW and 9i will effectively become the equivalent of my gap wedge and PW from my previous (non-blade) irons.

So I bought a set of 1948 Macgregor Ben Hogan 1522 irons recently and what is funny is these clubs were originally a store line model, not a professional model, so you’d think some of the attributes of these clubs would be geared towards the more novice player. Well, after I got these clubs in hand I couldn’t believe the design. Very large heads compared to the professional clubs of the same period, but the topline is razor thin and the offset is truely non existent. These are probably unicorn clubs for some blade enthusiasts here.

I took them out for 9 yesterday and they are beautiful.
