Low spin driver shaft for cut shots

Recommended Posts

I have recently been enjoying hitting cuts mostly off the tee. SS 105-108 playing Ventus 6S blue in Ping G410 LST. In Irons i am playing the Ctaper Lite X flex and hitting cuts and draw when needed. But with the driver i hit cut 95% of the time.

Looking to see what shafts you guys tested with hitting cuts off the tee with the driver while getting lower spin rates. I have been suggested the following shafts:

Tensi CK white

VA Drago wood

What do you think of these shafts? To me, the CK white was very dead shaft during the swing.

Looking to see if there are some other shafts that you guys have tested with hitting cuts and getting a good spin results. on a good day, my angle of attach is between 0-1 , any other day is between -2 and 0

Thank you in advance.

The number one determination of how much spin you'll get is the face impact location. The second is the dynamic loft you deliver. The shaft is very commonly far down on the list of influences for spin. The vast majority of ams will be much better off picking a shaft based on feel and consistency of the results. Trying to tweak launch numbers with shaft changes is extremely unreliable for most players and would be better off 1) working on improving face impact location and after that's been fixed 2) just tweaking the head loft to improve the numbers if there is still a need.

A second agree with Stuart. A shaft typically can only reduce spin by 200-250 rpm and this can be less for many players. Callaway did a detailed reseach on this stuff back in the Spring of 2018 and that was the conclusion using their robot and + handicap players. Strike is the number one criterion assuming the loft is correct.

Here is the deal...

If we was ROBOTS, the shaft itself has the potential to deliver less Dynamic loft, or forward shaft bending at impact, but like Stuart sais, Impact location and by that, Vertical gear effects is the ruler of spin on that beast we call the driver, its simply the nature of that club head, so Spin is ALWAYS FIRST a question of where we made impact VS the actual heads VCOG. If we make impact below VCOG the club head will twist forward during impact, and ADD spin, and if we make impact above VCOG, the head will twist forward during impact and cut off spin.

Loft at impact is overruled by Vertical gear effects on the driver, we need the exact same impact spot to isolate other parameters. (lab conditions with a Robot)

If we look at Trackmans charts for change of spin vs Dynamic loft, we will see that from a club speed of 80 mph, 1* as change on loft makes 208 Rpms spin change. From 110 Mph the difference to spin from 1* of loft is 286 Rpms.

What i saw as a trend or average in my studio was that moving impact 1/8" up or down, caused a change in spin levels of average 240 Rpms, so as example, if we wanted to cut of about 500 rpms of spin, all it takes is to move impact 2/8" higher on a angle og 90* vs the shaft (same club speed line).

That alone is close to what we possibly can expect from shaft change, but then comes the "feel aspect" of it.....

We should choose shafts by WEIGHT, (Balance point) - FEEL and DISPERSION

.If the shaft is right for you on weight, balance point, Feel and dispersion, your odds for making shots as you like are the very best, so dont think the shaft is a solver of spin, its a solver of feel, and how you deliver the club head to the ball, due to the way your swing became caused by how weight and feel of flex and profile from that shaft caused you to swing, thats what shafts does, but finding ideal impact to cut of spin is all up to your abilities and knowledge of how to play that cut, NOT the shaft, its just your dancing partner during THAT swing. So it boils down to weight, (or feel of weight due to BP), feel of flex and profile, and dispersion in YOUR hands swinging that shaft.

Leave ball flight to the club head, and your delivery of the club head to the ball, no matter preferred ball flight

Howard, the one guy Callaway used to compare to the robot is a very accomplished Senior player who has played in two U.S. Opens. Coincidentally ( or not) his driver swing speed was 110, the exact speed that the robot was programmed to deliver. Their results were virtually identical in terms of spin, launch, ball speed and dispersion with the robot having a slight, less than 1% advantage. Like you and I they determined that weight was the foremost consideration in shaft fitting.

If you look below, you will see that my driver and 3-wood shafts are both 44 grams. I had for years prior, used 60 and 70 gram shafts in those two clubs. I realised an immediate 15 yards with the driver and 9-11 yards with the 3-wood. At age 72, this was an incredible gain for me.

Hi,

here is some date in case it will help.

I couldnt make perfect swing as i had some pains in my right elbow this week.

Impact location is 99% center of the club, with 15 dynamic loft on average. Im playing 9 degree Ping G410 LST. However i am still not getting my optimal spin, hence i am looking for a low spin shaft.

Those numbers indicate a low strike.. a spin loft/dynamic loft of 15 deg means you are adding 6 degrees of loft at impact. With a positive AoA of 1-4 degrees (your hitting up on the ball) yet you are only getting a 15 degree launch angle and a very low peak height. A shaft is not the answer to your problem.

Dynamic loft is Spin loft plus AOA so in the first example its 15.5*+1.6*= 17.1* Dynamic loft. Launch was 14.6 who gives a Dynamic loft to launch of 0.85 and thats the average for drivers.

We can now sub AOA and we are back at 15.5* MINUS the club heads static loft = Dynamic loft added by the shaft or wrist.

In example 2, Dynamic loft is 13.1* Spin loft PLUS 4.4* AOA = 17.5* Dynamic loft.. Launch was 15.5 who gives a Dynamic loft to launch of 0.88, so impact was made higher on the face who also explain the lower spin value.

In my studio, i saw differences to SPIN values change with average 240 Rpm for each 1/8" we moved impact lower (higher spin), or higher on the face (lower spin)

4/8" as height difference on the face is enough to explain 960 rpms of spin and 0.9* to launch angle, so this is all about where we make impact on the face.

You are also loosing some ball speed due to your impact, so more distance here is NOT a different shaft, but improved impact location for both more ball speed, launch and spin.
