Driving iron for a R flex golfer

Anyone with a 80-85 mph driver swing speed playing a driving iron? If so, head and shaft combo? Just curious, because on average, hybrids are the recommendation for slower swing speeds vs long irons.

The issue is a good amount of club head speed is needed to get the driving iron to perform however if you have your heart set of trying one grab you something like the p790 udi or titleist u510 and throw a very tip soft shaft in it to help get some whip through the ball, somethin like a hzrdus RED or anything that has a very active tip section also read my article titled new speed trainer in this same forum column. Could help get you some extra speed. You could also try the cobra utility iron which is fairly forgiving as much a DI can be. The truth is some people just cant hit hybrids why i dont know. Also dont feel like you have to buy a club labled a driving iron to have one a good 3 iron with the right shaft ( plus some irons have more shaft tip diameter options like .355 or .370. Hope this helps but generally if you aint swinging you long irons atleast in the high 80s a driving iron you may struggle to get the distance I.E performance your looking for

Don't know my swing speed but I'm not a big hitter. A nice drive is typically something in the range of 240 yards. I have the 18 degree Callaway Apex UT with Recoil 95 Regular. Very happy with it. Have no problems launching it well off the tee but I rarely use it off the deck even though I am known to occassionally pull it off the bag when I need a long shot that runs a bit.

Got it a few years ago when I played more and had a fair bit more swing speed but it still behaves (unlike my driver in which the Hzrdus is way too stiff for my current swing).

I'm in the ballpark of your swing speed. The closest thing I bag to a driving iron is a Ping G Crossover 5 (2016) with the graphite Alta in R. I've not tried a 3 or 4 yet, but the 5 Crossover did scoot the 5 hybrid out of the bag. Flight is a little lower than the hybrid was, but still high enough to hold greens. You might want to demo a 3 or 4 Crossover to see if you get sufficient loft out of it.

I have a bout a low 90 swing speed with driver, and a mid 60's with iron.

I have a Cobra Utlity iron currently set at 22 degrees. I can get height on it nooooo problem with the right ball position and a nice tempo swing.

I have hit many 18-20 degree lofted driving irons (UDI, U85, TMB) on a sim and my height was about 30-40 feet at lowest. and this is all with a "STIFF" shaft.

 

Compared to my hybrids distance is a tad bit longer, and dispersion is way more predictable. But my hybrids take a less disciplined swing to get a solid result (for that club).

 

I just think it takes testing it out, trail and error and finding the one that works with your swing.

I think Tom Wishon has a table somewhere on this website that equates driver swing speed to longest iron in the bag. In this situation I probably wouldn't advise a person in the 80-85 range with driver to be hitting any iron really with less than 25 or 26* of loft. When I'm in good form my driver is around 110-112 and I still only go up to a 5i. A 4 and even 3 iron is fine off the tee but they simply don't get enough height for my swing off the turf usually.

If you need a reg shaft in a driving iron, you should not be bagging one. Driving irons need a nice amount of speed to get it flying in the correct window. The only scenario I see wanting one with a low swing speed is if you often play in heavy wind or links golf where you must keep it low and runny.

I've got a sub 100 swing speed with driver. I have the G410 crossover 2i. It's only in my bag because in the NC summertime the fairways tend to be scorched. Off the tee I hit this on short par 4's and I keep it low and it runs for days. I love it but it's really only got 1 use for me.

IMO, a driving iron isnt a good option for a slower swinger. You simply dont have enough clubhead speed to get the ball into the air. Unless you play in conditions where its always windy and you need to keep the ball low and out of the wind, you be better off with a fairway wood or hybrid.
