Might be done buying golf shoes

Recommended Posts

As long as they're water proof I would do it. That's really the only reason why I wear golf shoes, or slipping when walking down hills. I got the puma IGNITE PWRADAPT last year, comfort is more like a training shoe than traditional golf shoes. I also have footjoy dryjoys and DNAs. The DNAs are good, but dryjoys are heavy.

The nike roshe golf shoes i just bought seem to be the most comfterbal pair ive ever owned. Its about time they focus on foot bed comfort for golf shoes. I will say though that most golf shoes ive worn are actually better padded then sneakers. Some sneakers from nike feel soo harsh at the foot bed. Almost no cushioning. Guess its better then womens shoes though lol? Dont quite understand how they wear high heels. Harsh and bending your foot at a sharp angle..?? Is it worth it really?

The comfort and traction from the Nike Wildhorse is almost perfect for golf, I also think the new Wildhorse 5 is waterproof, the only slight issue is the colour ways, though they probably do an all black version too. With the exception of Ecco, I think high spec trail running shoes are better quality than equally priced soft spike shoes. £100 would get you a top of the line pair of Salomons, Nikes etc.

I decided to walk more (in the cooler months) using a push cart. So this thread interested me.

I've had good luck with Asics running shoes in the past. I found a pair of Gel Venture 7s that fit well for $45 at Nordstrom Rack, pictured below.

So far, played 9 holes in dry conditions, and had no issues with traction. The shoe was comfortable. I played great and shot a 33.

The shoe is not waterproof, and so I would use Sealskinz in wet conditions or early morning dew. I might also treat it with Sofsole heavy duty silicone spray.

Time will tell on durability.

Are the Altras holding up ok? I’ve been using their running shoes for golf, but the bottom is more foam than rubber and deteriorated quickly (on the Outside Of my left foot by the ball of my foot).

(Edit: Looking at them again, they're specifically running shoes with only foam and no rubber on parts of the bottom that are wearing.)

I came here originally to ask about turf damage. These are my Altra trail shoes. I have erred on the side of caution and not worn them on a course yet. What do you guys think?

My favorite aspect of not wearing golf shoes is the no-hassle relief I get when I get to the course and pack up to leave by not having to change shoes again. In most situations in the summer, a type of running shoe or hiking shoe will always have enough traction. The deal for me is making them look appropriate on the golf course.

I wore New Balance trail running shoes with Goretex in the spring & early summer this year due to wetter than normal weather.

I could not have been happier: Comfort, traction, lightweight & waterproof. I gave some serious thought to wearing them all year but I like the look/style of golf shoes.

I also have too many pairs to ignore.

I'm thinking trail shoes are absolutely the right direction. I agree, though, that styles are challenging particularly if you're playing fancier courses.

After spending time in wet climates, I personally find that a super breathable, fast drying shoe (like mesh) with a wicking, fast drying (running) sock works the best. With Goretex/waterproof, my feet sweat and take forever to dry out, so I still feel wet. With the mesh/wicking combo it never feels saturated. I used it to walk through rivers/streams on hikes and it wasn't bothersome at all, so now that's what I use for everything.

Agree...really like the wildhorse. Traction, footbed, and it's flat.

I played in Merrell trail running shoes for years after college. Finally started buying golf shoes and have had many different pairs of eccos, nike, footjoy and true links wear.

Now play eccos and true links wear exclusively. I often wonder if I should go back to trail running shoes, but now that I live in the Pacific Northwest I will only play in waterproof golf shoes.

  • 3 weeks later...

Bought a pair of Columbia OutDry sneakers from the employee store in Portland. They are mids instead of hi-top but they are 100% waterproof.

I have sensitive skin and especially on my feet so golf shoes have always torn my feet up.

I wore these Columbia sneakers at Bandon for 3 days in a row and 36 a couple of those days and my feet felt perfect.

I am late to this but will chime in with my experience. For a year, I have mostly worn an Oboz brand trail shoe because it is very stiff. That helps with a bad big toe joint on my trail foot. (Hallux limitus.)

Your mileage may vary, but for me, in damp conditions, my trail foot sometimes slips out during the downswing, where a soft spiked shoe does not. And, on good greens, the shoes can definitely leave prints. I really see it on the practice green. So far no one else has noticed, but if you see it, it's not good. My plan this summer is to get some golf shoes modified to be stiffer.

Pleased to discover this discussion; I've been preaching the trail-running-shoes-for-golf idea for some time. I've even seen people playing in these:

RQTT1NV4CMSI.pngA little extreme for me but I really like my Asics Gel Kahana 6 shoes. With rare exceptions, I walk when I play, and trail-running shoes have worked well for me. And, as others have pointed out, you can wear them on the way to the course. But, the bottom line is the bottom line--you can often get smokin' deals on trail running shoes.

I have a Morton's neuroma in my right foot, and pain in both feet in the plantar area from standing all day long on hard floors for work for the past 21 years. I had surgery last year for the Morton's neuroma which helped reduce some of the pain. I have a wide forefoot, but narrow heel area. That causes lots of difficulty finding good options for shoes and golf shoes in particular. The past 2 seasons, I have played in Altra running shoes, since they have a naturally wide toe box, but normal width around the heel, plus I can put my inserts in them and have good cushion under the forefoot. I bought a waterproof pair for morning golf when the grass is wet from dew or irrigation and a mesh pair for warm dry days or afternoon play. This has dramatically reduced my foot pain after a round of golf.

I wear these shoes a lot: Merrell Trail Glove 4. It's a "minimalist" trail running shoe that--for me--is ideal for walking the course in warm weather. They're not as cheap as, say, something you'd find on sale at Academy, but they are supremely comfortable. And, you can wear these to and from the course.

A whole tonne of trail running shoes from 2019 have just gone on sale here in the UK, you can pick up a pair of Salomon GTX (goretex) Ultra 3s for less than $80. Winter golf in Scotland would still be so muddy and wet that it would rot a pair of high end trail shoes but for all you great guys in the US there could be a real benefit in picking up a Summer/Fall shoe (some with Goretex) in the trail category.

I've personally found the Wildhorse 4 & 5 to provide great traction, but durability is another test I can't comment on yet.
