V1x-ish ball?

Shadrach

Recommended Posts

I have fiddled with various software golf ball selectors, and hit my share of test shots with different balls on well-known holes at the club to which I belong. The V1x keeps showing up as a winner for spin, launch angle/ max height, and even driver distance, even though I am very far from the fastest swinger on the block. However, while it may feel fine to me during high summer here in Buffalo, NY — that is, July 4th to July 5th :)) — it's a tad firmer than I prefer for our chilly, long spring conditions. OTOH, I found the Project (a) too mushy for summer.

So, I'm looking for a V1x that's just a tad softer feeling in chilly weather. Any suggestions, specially if they're Bridgestone, Srixon, or TaylorMade products? Thx.

Standard Pro V1 not an option? Similar performance in a softer ball.

I have been testing various balls for the last few months, mainly focused on TP5X and ProV1X, previous generation for both. I took advantage of Snell's offer in November and bought two dozen of the MTBX ($25 a dozen). I have been able to play three rounds with the MTBX and I really like everything about them. I won't say they are soft, but the temps have been in the 50's for the three rounds played and I didn't notice them as feeling that firm. They are long off the tee and they spin very well around the green. Unless something happens that really changes my mind, the MTBX is going to be my ball, all year.

Depends on what kind of spin he is looking for. I've played every v1x since they came out and the tp5x '18 (I don't have a ton of playing time with the 19 which may be different) spins way more on any short wedge shot, spins less on 8-pw and launches a shade bit lower but spins less on the long clubs. But that's just for me, it's so tough to pinpoint exactly what it will do for each person's swing. Best to just grab a few packs and go hit shots in the conditions you want to play them in.

IMO the Snell MTB-X fits that bill. I still have some V1X’s left from the fall and when compared the Snell surprised me with its feel. To me it’s a bit softer — but I think it’s silly to take feel into account when choosing a golf ball, so take my findings with a grain of salt.

aside from that — I’m sure Bridgestone’s RX and RXS are possibilities.

The MTB-X feels harder to me than a V1x, but feel is different for everyone. It definitely is higher compression. I probably wouldn't go the RXS route if he thought the Project(a) was too soft, those balls are going to be fairly similar. And the RX isn't a ball I'd recommend to that many people. It's not really much softer than the BXS, but you lose a bunch of spin. Considering he's playing the highest spin Titleist ball, I think the balls that would work best for him are Pro V1, Z-Star, BXS, TP5, MTB Black, or Chromesoft X.

First of all, thanks to all who wrote thoughtful responses.

Next, a few things. I have played the V1 on and off since its inception. Of late, the V1 comes off my clubs a bit flatter than I think may be optimal. But that's at the margin; if Titleist offered to send me six dozen a year for life if I played the V1 exclusively, it'd be a done deal (and I could pocket the money I'd make selling two of those six dozen :) During high summer in 2019, I played two sleeves of TP5s. It had the best grab I've experienced in years; it felt, and looked, great; and cost me nothing with the driver. It will def get another sniff this spring. Finally, that B XS also sounds interesting, specially with the fairy dust that'll be sprinkled all over the 2020 edition.

There's a big temporal gap between my last golf of the season and my first golf of the following year. My local buddy likes to joke that our golf season is only 4 months long, but our golf buying season goes on all year. That's why WRX is fun now, along with baseball's hot stove, just playing "what if."

*******************

Rather than start a new thread, I'll swerve just a bit here on the back half of this entry. I have come to realize (at 71: "too soon old, too late smart") that gaining 2-3 yards more off the driver compared to all other performance-related characteristics of a given ball is a chase that's a fool's game. Because of either total length or hole design, several of my club's par 4s are 10 - 40 yards too long for me to reach (until I get comfortable playing from the pink tees :)) Even 5 yards more off driver and fairway wood won't get me there. So the ball I'll pick for 2020 will be the one that I can dart throw (as little as I am admittedly able) from the red disk in.

The MTB-X has an 85-90 compression (right from Dean's site) while everything I've seen about the V1X is that it's around 100. The new V1X may be lower though.

I'm a big fan of B XS as a spinny soft ball. I personally prefer the B X, but the B XS certainly has some zing to it around the greens. To be fair, I haven't given any of the TP5 models any time yet, and the Z Star XV to me feels much firmer than a PV1x, so I wouldn't even consider it if soft is a concern.

I play regular PV1 now that they made the PV1x the spinny version. Played the X since release prior to the "switch" with the PV1.
