What is the one rule you wish could be changed

Recommended Posts

Forty pages of arguing about a rule being illogical. Because one person deems it so. I can respect and appreciate a person’s opinion that they don’t like the rule, that’s perfectly understandable. But in a made up GAME, most any game, couldn’t almost any arbitrary rule be called illogical?

Here's value to end this thread. At least for me. Enough of this drivel.

It has been mentioned before but you have tried to compare it to a foul ball in baseball-except in golf you need to play foul balls not get a do over.

The penalty for OB is more severe than a penalty area because, quite simply, you failed to keep the ball on the course. PERIOD. It would be more logical to make the OB penalty a DQ as you failed to keep the ball on the course but they have leniently just made it stroke and distance.

I do admire your persistence though. I don't think you even believe some of what you type. You just enjoy the attention and consternation you bring from other posters.

Let me tell you a secret. They are not bad golfers because they can't hit their driver through a 10-yard window. They are bad golfers because they refuse to play a club with which they can safely hit the 10-yard window or lay up short of it.

@LICC Clearly, the bullets are being applied to a ball in its original location, which was unplayable, or in a new location that is a bad lie. The fact that they added the words "in a bad lie" supports my argument that a player shouldn't just declare a ball in a good lie as unplayable. The "does not wish to" language in the second bullet is constrained by the beginning of the interpretation, which limits the scope to a ball in its original unplayable position or in its newly dropped position "in a bad lie."
Just to be sure that I understand. You are saying that the RoG allow a different set of principles to govern unplayable lies after a drop (when the ball is in play) than for that same position when the ball lands there after a stroke. Is that what you are saying?
If that is what you are saying, then I don't know what to say.

He also chooses to ignore the FIRST bullet point, which clearly says that after the drop, the player is in a new situation, that the initial "bad lie" is no longer material. So the bullet points say that this is a new situation, and if the player doesn't want to play the shot from this new situation, the player may take relief.

I believe that you said that after an unplayable lie drop the rules allow you to take another unplayable lie just because it is a bad lie. You have steadfastly maintained that is not legal in other situations. So a ball in play after some drops is somehow different than a ball in play that just landed in the same spot. That is what you said - maybe not what you meant.

And you are inventing requirements that are not in the rules. Unplayable is, and will always be, a matter of the player's individual judgement until a specific definition is inserted into the rules. Try to write one yourself, we'll all help you to make it applicable to all potential situations.

And integrity, including playing by the rules, applying penalties, and being honest about my judgement, is saying "This is a difficult situation, I've decided to treat my ball as unplayable, as authorized under Rule 19.1, and take penalty relief under Rule 19.2"

It’s useless to try to help LICC with his issues. He is uniquely devoted to obfuscation.

I believe everyone here knows the truth, but if I’m wrong and you don’t, simply call the USGA for your clarification.

And for god’s sake, if you do call, don’t bother to post the response here, as LICC will simply call the USGA “illogical” and attempt to obfuscate once again.

Can we please move on?
