2019 Year of the Driver... whats in store for 2020?

This time last year 2019 was already labelled as the year of the driver. Did it live up to the hype?

I think it might become the year of instruction. Drivers aren't really going any further, iron technology hasn't changed much, wedge grooves have gotten slightly better, but for me personally I'm going to invest more this year in lessons/instruction than I do in equipment.

Feels like a down year for equipment so far. Maybe we’ll be pleasantly surprised as we head into the spring.

For the first year only minor equipment changes, new wedges I added, new drivershaft but that’s it.

This may sound odd but I think it may be the year of the shafts. Wood and putter shafts to be specific. Several companies are coming out with a few new wood shafts offering various that are quite interesting honestly an appealing if they fit your swing.

 

The other being putter shafts, many people have overlooked them for so long just using whatever shaft came with their putter. Now many companies offer or are coming out with various putter shafts many of them utilizing the properties that composite shafts offer that metal cannot. Stability shafts have gotten quite popular, StrokeLab are the main focus of Odyssey, the KBS Tour shaft is being used by many companies as the stock offering and could takeover as the "baseline" putter shaft very soon.

 

With how far all technology has come recently in golf other areas have to be looked at to improve ones game and shafts are probably going to be it for a while.

 

Just a reminder get fitted for the shaft just don't go buy a $400 shaft thinking it's going to be a fix for you.

I second MattM97’s thought. Shafts started getting hot in the middle and end of the year with all the new tech coming to drivers and also it started off big with the Stroke Lab and then Stability shaft for putters. Seems like the start of a trend and since those were the first for putters it can only get better.

Great point, looking at various shafts myself working with my existing equipment. The product cycles need a break IMO.. But as far as shafts many new ideas and technology including material types are very intriguing.

Exactly and how much improvement can you get? Unless your clubs are the worst fit for you then yeah that will be a major difference. When I did my bag I got clubs that works for me and that I can adjust/adapt as my game changes. Like my driver is set to draw but this season could set it to neutral, if I got a draw biased driver I might have needed to buy a new driver. This winter I'll see if there is a shaft that is an improvement over my current stock offering, if not I'll stick with what I have. This is pretty much how the rest of my bag will be but I and many other really need to stick with the bag they have as long as it's fit properly.
