DIY Speed sticks question

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm looking at what I'd need to do for this with a DIY and some advice from anyone doing similar builds.

I've got some shafts with TM adapters on, am I overthinking this or could I just do a washer screwed into the adapter with then multiple washers weighted to the desired weighted club?

Thanks

I made mine using simple pvc with appropriate weight of washers inside and epoxied into place. It's pretty easy to get the exact weight you need for each speed stick as long as you have a gram scale. I had some old driver shafts lying around so I think I spent about $25 for everything else. I made mine to the exact advertised weight on the speed stick site. I also made a senior set for a friend. The only down side to mine is I have to be careful not to impact the ground with a swing. I'm not sure the pvc would survive that.

I've used a stock TM R11 driver shaft I replaced with it's adapter and screwed in a bolt with washers so will be epoxying.

It seems ok to me, I'm under no illusions its going to last a full set of months of SS training though.

I couldn't find wide, heavier washers for the small m4 screw size that TM use on there drivers, however I've got some arriving today/tomorrow.

Overall with penny/cent washers shaft is 65G+10 washers @ 5 grams = 115G so way way lower than entry level speed sticks. Just a thought but has anyone tried sand inside the shaft to create a heavier shaft section?

I really really really think a speed radar device is far more important here to get the feedback that I am improving than buying pre made speed sticks.

Make your life easier and just use an old driver. I know this is heresy, but there is not one shred of research from any sport that shows that swinging three clubs of different weights for a lot of swings per club is more beneficial, and likewise there is no data that you need or benefit from a gazillion swings vs. a smaller number. Speed training and weight training are NOT the same thing.

I'm working with a guy who was just listed in Golf Digest as one of the top golf fitness trainers in the country. He's done a mountain of research on this, and the largest gains have come with just the blue club, which is slightly lighter than a standard driver. Baseball studies confirm that swinging your own bat FAST a few times is the best way to activate speed; no doughnuts or lead pipes or multiple bats. Same thing in studies of cricket batters; I know that sounds funny in the US, but it's quite a big deal in other parts of the world.

FWIW, he has me take five swings non-dominant, followed by five swings dominant with the blue club. I do three sets of that, but it's the fourth of four exercises in the "speed" workout, so there is probably a good 8-10 minutes in between sets of swings. If you are doing ONLY the swings, I think his recommended protocol is ten swings each way, with three minutes in between.

I've got the same thoughts on this myself too.

I've got an orange whip as well so I'll just keep doing DIY on sticks and seek a device to monitor the swing speed.

Regardless how quickly you swing anything, if the technique isn't bang on then you just won't benefit with the power gained.

As to the technique thing, I've had to reorient myself on that. I had been doing the Super Speed protocol for several months, always with an eye toward making the swing that I make when I play. The guy I'm working with now says that's not the right thing to do; speed training is about activating fast twitch fibers and telling your body to go fast; technique doesn't matter. He even suggested that I use a baseball grip on the club for the drills if that makes me swing faster. It was counter-intuitive to me, but this guy is REALLY good and has a ton of research backing up what he teaches.

Dan, I have some detailed instructions on my website on how to make these, including determining how heavy each weight should be. You don't necessarily need to buy the brass and use that for your weight, but my Excel sheet has a nice calculator on determining weight amount for all 3. No reason you couldn't use washers to do this. Overspeed Training Clubs

Larry,

I had a metal works locally who sold brass, went in there and ended up getting stainless steel.

The guy was quite good, he gave me mostly my exact spec with some cut offs and did a full professional cut/mill of the weight. It looks just like a speed stick lol

He charged me about 30 dollars to do the exact spec (200g) etc, its being epoxied on at the moment so fingers crossed and I'll send a picture when done :)
