LOL I would have given $3.99 for the Kapalua head cover itself and considered the driver a bonus.

that's from the Dr John song isn't it?

I been in the right place but it must have been the wrong time

I'd have said the right thing but I must have used the wrong line

I been in the right trip but I must have used the wrong car

My head was in a bad place and I'm wondering what it's good for

Yep you nailed it-- It is Dr John

We had a parody on that song we razzed a guy endlessly with--- On a down match he hit the wrong club and the wrong ball

I hit the wrong club ( airmailed the green)

found out it was the wrong ball

cost me 2000 bucks so I'll go book some ( he was a bookie)

When they first came out with Karaoke I was about 3/4 lit one night and did the song at the Fog Cutter in Charlotte--- I do not remember all the words now--- He got pounded merciless with that song for a while. I remember at Eastwood GC in Charlotte one day the 10th tee ran right beside the road. One of his opponents paid a guy 50 bucks with a ghetto blaster to play that wide open and ride up and down Eastway drive in a pick up truck the whole time the guy was on 10.

Strange. I am a Dr. John fan - have a number of his albums on my phone and I've been to his concerts before. "Food for Thot" is my favorite track. Sad to see him die (two years ago now??)

My buddy texted me yesterday asking about set clubs at estate sale. I said shoot me a pic or three. They wanted $200 for: 909D driver, Cally Diablo Tour 13, TM Burner 5 wood, TM Burner rescue, TM Burner Tour Irons 4-sw and a Odyssey White Hot Tour #7h putter. I said give them $100 and they took his offer. I got the clubs - they're like a half-inch/inch extended and potentially a degree upright. Decent buy overall. I'm just going to flip all of it in the Summer.

  • 4 weeks later...

stopped at one of the thrifts and came away with this set of Lynx Master Model irons, 4-PW. R shafts. brown Chamois grips. (though I'll likely remove those and add a bit of color).

pretty sure they are cast. in good shape with just a bit of chatter on the toplines. grooves ought to clean up nicely. maybe add some paintfill to the backs. winter lull gets me bored.

couldn't go wrong for $15

Good Buy!! The shafts are worth $15 alone IMHO. Lynx made some decent stuff in those days. I do know Tom Wishon designed some irons for them. I do not know if it is the ones you have. Lynx is back at it again full throttle it seems they have several iron offerings now among other equipment. those new blades they have look pretty good to me. In fact a couple of weeks ago I did a trade deal for a newer Lynx Black Cat Putter which is an 8802 style with an insert. I also have a couple older Lynx 8802 style putters from back in the day probably the same vintage as your irons

Hey all you vintage golfers. What are the odds that we could get a couple groups to visit me in KY. The course I'm at is a perfect layout for vintage. Not too long - small, great putting surfaces - outstanding elevation changes - and none of the side-by-side-by-side fairways. The layout is spread out, and offers unique challenges, with some holes possibly driveable (depending on the zip left in your vintage golf balls) and strategy is paramount.

Even if we can't/don't get a small group for a tournament, I would hope that any of you that get in my neighborhood would stop in for a quick round, and maybe a bourbon (or 2) after the round.

Some excellent overnight accomodations here, where I have already negotiated very reasonable rates - and, the bar & grill here at the course makes some delicious offerings as well.

Would like to think that some of you who travel might make it this way, and would love to extend our open doors to one and all!

Just wish it would warm up and dry up soon....

Would be about 800 miles for me. Its a lovely idea, but my recent job change makes such trips a bit more complicated than they were when I was going to Columbus and Cincinnati back a decade and a half ago.

I've been on this site now for quite some time, 6 or so years and I sometimes read about old stuff that I remember and also stuff that I remember but much more vaguely. I don't think anyone has ever mentioned the old Vagabond golf bags. They were fairly slim nylon lightweight bags. I think there may an old green one hanging in my hometown house garage. If anyone remembers them I would think it would be you Stu and maybe a few others. Was a great bag that held all 14 and I could sling it around like a raggedy ann doll. That bag and the Original Jones were the only bags I used as a Junior/High School player then came the Sun Mountains like you mentioned and the Ping version not necessarily in that order.

I think that green nylon bag I picked up a while back at Goodwill may be a Vagabond. it had a half broken off Voit emblem on it which I took the rest of the way off. It is a little smaller than my Jones Classic has only one pocket and is light as heck. It is actually lighter and a little larger than my Golfsmith Sunday bag. In fact I have my car set of 10 clubs in it with about 5 balls 2 gloves and tees and it is light as heck. I put a Nike padded strap on it that I salvaged off another bag. Really it carries as good as any carry bag I have owned and I have absolutely no issues with clubs hanging etc. Back in my school days I carried a Hogan Sun Jet or a Hot Z. I learned a valuable lesson about early golf carts and carry bags. With my old man running a course and us living literally in the middle of it naturally I had my own electric cart from when I was 12 years old up. I wore that Sun jet out where the bag meets the stand mount on my cart. I was ticked because it was a beautiful little red white and blue. My old man had scored a smoker of a deal on some Hot Z bags so I ended up with one that was a burgundy and green with First Flight on it but I got it at cost for $10. I ended up putting an old leather Dunlop Staff bag on my cart and I had enough gloves balls and tees as I do now to furnish both bags so when it was time to walk all I had to do was switch the clubs. I had another bag on the cart also which was an old Spalding Staff bag. Had stuff I worked around the course in it like shovels sling blade and rake. Also carried a 20 gauge shotgun to shoot Muskrats and for protection at night when I closed the range. Also had a ball retriever in it. Had a 5 gallon bucket mounted where they have those fancy little baskets now.

Had a Vagabond for many years about the same time my friends were getting into the Sun Mountain bags. I really liked that bag. Light as can be. 2 nice pockets on the top (when carrying) and a nice long sweater/jacket pocket on the bottom. Used it for many years.

Missed out on one last month on eBay (Soft side one, not the one with the plastic tube in it).

Wondering now if they were made by Jones as a cheaper model? Think they came out of Portland too. But they sure have a lot of the same styling as the classic Jones carry bag.

How to play golf.
Hit the ball.
Find the ball
Repeat until the ball is in the hole.
Have fun.

5GM1JKT2JGHK.jpgFor $25 did I do alright. This is only my second attempt at thrifting. My grandpa (RIP) played Hogan speed slot woods and Radial irons. He was also a lefty so I can't play his clubs. It will be awesome to assemble my own bag to match his. This was the start. It's also my understanding that the FC irons were forged by Miura. And the Bounce Sole 3 iron just seemed to cool to pass up for $2 bucks. I also grabbed a Hogan Midsize GCD with the black shafts, 4 and 9 iron. I figured I could just flip those.
