Callaway Apex CF19 v. TM P790 (2019)?

Recommended Posts

I played the CF16 and now on my second set of CF 19s with a short stint with the apex pro 19. Everything on paper says the 19’s are better than the CF16 but for me something just doesn’t click (wish I would have hung onto my CF16s honestly). I recently got fit again for the P790s and have them on the way to go head to head. The P790s are the same in distance and feel is subjective so I won’t go there. For me the P790s just look so much better and the lack of offset in the top end of the set made me pull the trigger on them.

For reference I play to 0-2 handicap and decided along time ago to play the most forgiving clubs I could stand to look at. Golf is tough enough...

Great topic and looking forward to reading others who have tried both.

I’ll share my head to head once I get the chance to put both through the paces.

I agree with the statement about the 16’s being better than the 19’s. I also think the P790’s look better. I can’t wait to hear more when your set comes in.

Finally got my P790s in and played 9 tonight to break them in! I have to say my expectations were low that TaylorMade could build a custom order to spec but after checking them I was impressed how close they were (loft/lie). Conversely my Apex were a mess when I first received them. Now on to the head to head. The P790s are straight up better looking at address. The top line, lack of offset especially in the long irons are more pleasing to look down at and personally provides more confidence. Feel is subjective but the P790s feel closer to a “forged feel” than the Apex to me but both are fun to hit. Due to the gapping they Apex are longer by a small margin but this is most likely due to loft differences. Even though I’m early into the honeymoon phase with these P790s for me they look better, feel great and most importantly...predictable. I felt like there is no learning curve with these and maybe I’m just used to the player distance profile with the Apex but I didn’t feel like I had to change anything with my swing or intent to get the result I wanted.

Lastly I have to say I’m about as far from a fanboy of any particular brand and play with what works for me. That said the P790s are impressive and worth it to try against the Apex to see what suits your eye.

Hope this helps the OP.

Had a fitting at Club Champion and I asked what players distance iron was he fitting more than others. He said the new P790 hands down. Their model is to fit to a head and then find a shaft.

I was open to anything as I was more interested in the process and the recommended iron was the CF19 when it was all said and done.

I tried the new T200 and MP20 HMB, as well. Ultimately, I just enjoyed the feel of the CF19 over the others but was finding similar numbers with similar head/shaft combos...although my numbers were fractionally and consistently better with the CF19s. It just felt like a little trampoline, like I could feel the cup face give and fire the ball off regardless of shaft.

The P790s were solid but I wasn’t fond of the mishits. They seemed to take off a lot of spin and just fall out of the air.

I found much less distance loss with mishits off the CF19 and my OG Srixon 545s.

Want to hit the CF19s with a few more shaft options and on different days since my 8hcp swing is more sporadic than ever, but I think I’ll bag them fairly soon.

Be sure to test Srixon Z 585 and maybe Combo Z585/Z785 with shafts that fits you. They're are way better than my Apex CF 16 for two years and Ping i200 for one year and half! Srizon irons are forged and very soft. All ball flight flight high and straight with DG 105. last Saturday, My five iron sticked in middle green ( Par 3, 182 Yards) no roll! They're like darts. They're also way cheaper than CF19 & P790! Thus will let you to get new driver or wedges etc....

I had the Apex CF19's w/ Modus 105 Stiff shafts for a while over the summer and liked the clubs until I hit the 2019 P790's....

P790s look better at address, I feel the sound/feel is better with the P790's than the Apex and I like the longer blade length of the P790s over the CF19's.

The biggest thing for the P790's that everyone has issues with is I think they settle on fitting themselves into a shaft or taking the stock shaft. IT IS SO IMPORTANT to get fit for the P790's if you go that route. I went into my fit for them thinking that the Modus 105 stiff would fit just like the Apex but was mistaken and could not get the spin where I wanted it. Found that the PX LZ 120 6.0's helped control the flight but gave it enough descent angle and spin so I can hold greens.

I havent had any flier issues as I think that can be attributed to less than average ball strikers hitting the toe and heel and then all of a sudden hitting the center of the face and getting better distance referencing that as a "flier"

Both are solid options but if it was my bet I would go with the 790's. Im not a TM homer by any stretch but was very impressed with these irons. Liked them a lot more over the 2017 version as the top line looks better and to me they feel less clicky.

Good Luck!

Agree with a lot of what you said. I just hit the CF 19 and p790. I much prefer the look and feel of the 790. The CF 19 visibly have a lot more offset than the 790, which I’m not a fan off. I also thought the CF 19 felt pretty hard- the feel at impact just didn’t do it for me. It goes to show, you have to get out there and hit them for yourself, because I went into the store wanting to like the CF 19 over the 790, and the exact opposite happened....

I must! I didn’t know anything about the specs when I went to hit them. After hitting them for a bit, I told the sales guy that it looks like the 19 had more offset. He looked at them and agreed. Who knew I have the eyes of a raptor! I actually think it’s fairly obvious if you are more sensitive to that sort of thing. Regardless, I preferred the look and feel of the 790 over the CF 19. 790s were a touch longer, dispersion was the same, but both were good irons. I was disappointed in the “feel” of the cf 19 the most, after hearing about it from some people I know. I tested them in Dg 120 s300 and Dg AMT s300, fwiw.

He did. He gave me a free set of CF19, but I wanted to return them because of the offset. Almost went with the 790s, until my keen eyesight noticed that the i500 have visibly less offset than the 790s. So, I hit the i500s, but I have great hearing as well, so I noticed a more displeasing clanky post impact sound. Consequently, I decided the 790s were the best combo. Then, the sales rep and I gave each other a high five and laughed like Dr. Evil at everybody without my level of eyesight and hearing. I proceeded to leave the store and fly away (another super power). It was a good day.

I just got fit at Club Champion and interestingly enough we focused on shaft first then club head. Got fit into the Accra iCWT 95 then hit T200, HMB, MMC, 919 Forged, Apex Pro, T100, P760, P790.

The P790 was far and away the best head for me. I really loved the lack of offset and it feels great. I also liked the Apex but it sounds awful. Every shot I hit had the same sound which lead me to believe I had a solid strike and it just wasn’t true.

I was also set on TM 790 or CF19's. I demoed them extensively and could not find much of a difference between the two. I thought the 790's looked better so almost bought them until I tried the Mizuno HM Pro's. Mizzy's look better, low off-set, felt and sounded better and performed nearly identical to the 790's. They were also cheaper which sealed the deal. Don't think you could go wrong with any of these offerings.

Thank you. I thought it was easily noticeable. I’m flattered that Billybaroo thinks I have superhero vision, but I feel it’s no different than the guys that do online reviews and sit them next to each other and say this club has a little more offset than that one. I just watched a few reviews today comparing i500 and 790. One of the first comments was looks like i500 has a bit less offset than the 790s.

It may be only 1mm, but the way the hosel and leading edge are cut, it sure looks like a lot more than that. Very easily noticeable.

I am coming from Srixon Z765 - has anyone hit both the P790 and the Srixon's? Would it be fair to say that the P790s would be more forgiving as they are a hollow players club?

I played 785’s this past season. Soft, look great and solid distances. Playing 790’s now. Why? Forgiveness. No comparison to me for my inconsistent strikes. Especially out on the toe.
