When you sling your driver into the trees..... I laugh and know it's time to press you again!

When you bury your putter into the green after that 4-putt.... I get a big old grin and savor your suffering! No more birdies for you pal!! hahahaha...

When you rip the windshield off your cart in a fit of rage.... I laugh hysterically for the next three holes after I collect the windshield as a trophy!!

I will never be the voice of reason, and I promise I'll never try to "talk you down". I'm in it for the laughs and the ridicule.... entertain me CLOWN!!!!

 

Meltdowns are soooooo entertaining and several of my buddies are so easy to get going. Adds a special "spice" to golf I don't ever get with other sports.

Am I the only sicko that enjoys rants/meltdowns/freak outs/hysterics?

I don't enjoy it. I always feel bad for the guy having one...it's not just the meltdown itself, but the person is obviously incredibly frustrated, and not having much fun.

One of the true tests of this game is how we handle unmet expectations. Temperamental human behavior can be entertaining in a sick sort of way, but I do feel for the player that can't handle reality.

Full disclosure.... the windshield incident actually happened in early December during a money match with a bunch of my best friends. I was hyperventilating I was laughing so hard. I’d like to think I was a partial cause of the epic meltdown.... miraculous “get out of jail” shots on back to back holes and a timely 3 putt by my one buddy set him off like a stick of dynamite!!!

I used to play with a guy that could have destructive meltdowns (i.e., bury putter head in green, pound driver down into tee box). Throw clubs now and then. After helicoptering a club with the pro watching during a match we were playing against the pro and his partner I believe there was a discussion (not the first) about some things between them. He was a + handicap and very talented, but golf was his tipping point. Some things changed for the better in his life, new wife, happy and puts less pressure on his time golfing and complete turnaround attitude-wise (he doesn't play nearly as well and acknowledges that, but is at peace with it). It was terribly uncomfortable to be around and no joy at all in witnessing as I did a few times. But, he's a nice person, great father and although change was forced on him in a way, it led to a lot of positives. Still glad to call him a friend, but we just don't golf as much as we did - must address that this summer!

I love it simply because I have the same severe temperamental over-reaction just waiting to come out of me. Fortunately, I have adjusted my on-course behaviour now and there won't be a meltdown of old coming out of me anytime soon. But darn it if I won't enjoy someone nearby having a meltdown on course!

I have FINALLY learned that my old whiny, anger-filled golf demeanour was not fun to be around on course so now I keep that in mind always. I don't want to ruin anyone else's round and heck, I play a lot better without all the frustration boiling up inside me.

I agree 100%.... the dude that’s always angry or whining sucks to play with, always miserable. The out of character meltdowns are GOLD and are where the pure entertainment is.

I'm down for someone chucking a club or swinging it wildly (especially if it's not in their demeanor) but the moment you start wrecking the course, I'm out b/c then you just look like an ass. If it's an all the time thing, then (as someone mentioned), I wont be playing with you much longer.

I've had my share of emotional meltdowns on the course, not physical, I wont damage the course or my gear. But it is definitely a result of all other aspects of my life also getting to me, then golf that day is just another thing I can't do and the self loathing at that moment can prove to be too much for me. I walked off the course a couple times this year.... silly in hindsight as I shouldn't expect nearly so much from myself.

But as mentioned above it really is a sign of much larger personal problems coming to the surface.

Oddly enough, the guy that ripped his windshield off has a great sense of humor (one of the funniest people I know) and put a rubber snake next to my golf cart a few holes later to get a laugh. I screamed like a girl and everyone got a huge laugh at my expense (I laughed too). Seriously, who actually carries a rubber snake in their golf bag for heaven’s sake?

My. opinion is that if you don’t like being laughed at, don’t meltdown in front of me, because I AM going to laugh at you.

For me, I’d say this only applies to golf meltdowns and fans/grads of my university’s main rival. Other than these two scenarios, I’m generally an empathetic person.

Not being insulting, but i would almost bet that as you continue along your current path, you will have

fewer friends to laugh at. Course, that means fewer folks around you having meltdowns. Which means

you have less chance of getting hit with one of their thrown clubs ! See how lucky you are ! Congrads !

It wastes time and embarrasses me (unless it's a child doing it). However back in August a mate jokingly pretended to throw his 8i on a par 3 and lost his grip. It went sailing down a hill and into thick brush and brambles. After ten minutes of futile searching I said "Does the R&A specify a time limit when searching for a lost club?" and when my other mate got to the green he asked the first mate if he could borrow a club to chip-on "An 8 iron would be ideal" :)

So at least that provided us some amusement.
