What is the one rule you wish could be changed

Recommended Posts

The one rule that I always wish was changed was actually changed, but apart from that, I think that Sui and others are on the right track as far as making the rules easier to apply for anyone that doesn’t have a guy with a radio at their disposal.

When I attempt (poorly sometimes) to answer a rules quiz on here I always try to preface the answer with me, just regular joe, trying to apply the rules as written Out on the course

Nice post. On a parallel track-

If knowledgeable and motivated rules students (and we have a number here) have a difference in opinion about how a particular event on the course needs to be treated under the Rules, and that difference remains after a thorough discussion, then we likely have a valuable scenario to put before the Ruling Bodies for resolution and awareness. Such effort and follow up, IMO, is in the best interests of the game we love.

I can't figure out the quote function any better than the edit function.

Any way, I disagree that any subset of human beings has ever come to a consensus on anything.

LOL

You click the "Quote" button on someone's post, and THEN scroll to the bottom and type UNDER the quoted text. No need to KEEP HITTING the quote button - all that will do is repeat the same quote (as you've seen).

Edit ? You see the gear icon in the upper right hand corner of you post ? Click on it, then click "edit", then edit and save your post. Easy peasy.

As for consensus, that's an agreement, not necessarily a unanimous vote.

I don't want to prolong this topic, but I did receive an answer from the USGA on the question posed about the player proceeding under Rule 19 (unplayable) and Rule 1.2a (player conduct, honesty), and it says that the player can choose to proceed under Rule 19 whenever they choose to do so (except when the ball is in a penalty area) and therefore Rule 1.2a would not not apply.

And so ends the reading for today.

I would prefer to bag one of my specialty sand irons instead of having to take my finesse wedge into bunkers.

Specialty sand irons were common before courses and maintenance methods changed to encourage target golf over the old style run-up game After that, players wanted a sand wedge that they could more easily play from the turf and the old fashioned specialty sand iron all but disappeared. The fourteen club rule made it difficult to carry shot-specific specialty clubs.

The beauty of the classic sand iron was less about the loft or the bounce than it was about the round leading edge onset in front of the shaft. Instead of splashing a huge cloud of sand out of the bunker, it threw out a rooster tail of sand which reduced resistance and minimized the likelihood of flubbing the shot.

If I'm looking at soft, fluffy, sand, I bag a specisalty sand iron anyway, invariably at the expense of a club that I'll also need.

Fourteen isn't a golf number. It's just an arbitrary number that some USGA or R&A bureaucrat pulled out of his rectum.

14 (clubs) is an arbitrary number? Absolutely.

But the alternative of folks with a pimped out cart with 600 clubs doesn't work for me either.

And where ever a line is drawn, it won't be enough for some purposes. If the game truly wished to emphasise stroke making and ball control skills more, I think the legal number of clubs should be cut in half.

Will LICC post his question? We'll see.

For comparison's sake it would be interesting to see what differences there are between the two, and to see if thosee differences elicit a different answer. Without hm posting it we'll never be able to tell. To get to the truth we'll need transparency.

I realise that this thread has been overrun by one poster, however to return to the original question, I would like the rule on advice to be modified or scrapped altogether.

It is probably the rule most breached (not that this should be a reason) but I would hazard a guess that it is the most breached unknowingly (this may be a good reason). It is also interesting that when it is discussed on here it seem to elicit opposing responses to situations by posters whose knowledge is well respected and usually are in line with each other and therefore the rules

I don’t have a sensible modification to propose so I would have to go with scrapping as I honestly don’t think it really provides players with a significant enough advantage.
