Cleveland RTX4>Vokeys?

Hall401

Recommended Posts

Is anyone gaming the Cleveland RTX4s my sm7s have been in the bag since the release date and are thoroughly worn down. I’m def not liking the looks of the new sm8s I guess the performance will be great as always, but we will have to see. The prices dropping of the RTX4s are very appealing and they coke stock with TI s400s. Let me here the good the bad and the ugly haha.

I almost went from SM6/7 to RTX4 but I couldnt figure out the grinds and how they compare to the Vokey grinds I'm using now. Really no one compares to what the Vokey line has out, there's just so many options - but I'm sure SOME of them cross over to other companies.

One of my main reasons I’m struggling to try anything different. I’ve had much success with vokeys in the 8° bounce region with 50/54/58. Typical shallow swing where I benefit from lower bounce options. I will admit they have my attention with their low bounce option around 6° in some of the RTX4 lofts.

I found a few grinds similar and I read up on the X/S/C grinds from Callaway but I just couldnt mentally pull the trigger. Right now I'm 52F/56F/60D with everything in 12 degrees IIRC and I just couldnt find any descriptions or reviews from the Callaway grinds that lead me to believe they were for me.

YMMV

Honestly, and this would get downvotes if that existed on here... but I think Vokey's are over rated. IT used to be they were the best because they offered many options as far as lofts, grinds and even finishes... but now almost every OEM is on par with them. The feel is not any better than the rest, they don't do anything magical or better than any other wedge. Sure, maybe you like the looks or something, and that's subjective... I personally think the new Jaws wedges or MG look the best, if that's your thing.

Glide 3.0 are beast performers though. Super forgiving, maybe not the most compact in the world but they feel incredible, sound awesome and flat out perform. So yeah if you like RTX4, feel no shame... I wouldn't even rank Vokey top 3 for me anymore.

No down votes here my friend. I’m not one of those brand loyal guys haha. If it work for me it goes in the bag whether it’s big name or no name. I do however like a more compact look that blends into my irons. I’m currently gaming the Srixon z forged or should I say practicing with them (no golf here in the northeast winter) was definitely leaning towards the Cleveland and even looking to try the new T20s by Mizuno.

Yeah if it were down to look behind the ball, Jaws wins on looks but I know once in outside in the summer, sun light will be shining off the chrome, so I'd go black. MG also nice but I'm not into the rusty face thing. I actually have not hit rtx4 so I can't comment but I've read they are a huge improvement over rtx3 which I did own, and did not like much.

Vokeys always look good, but the glides are the butter. That polymer insert really does a great job... Feels soft just like my mizzy irons. I remember rtx feeling very nice also but the offset was horrible.

I am more confident with the RTX 58 low grind than any low-bounce wedge I’ve had. Mid-bounce is good too. For standard soles, I like Vokey F grind and Callaway S grind and for wide the Callaway W grind is great and so are the Mizuno S5. Underrated: Cobra Pur wedge versatile grind.

I wouldn’t say the RTX4 is better than the Vokey but I am more consistent with it at the lob wedge spot off tight lies.

I’m looking forward to getting my hands on the 58° low bounce. +1 for the vokey F grind that worked wonders for my gap wedge play. Just right now the deals are crazy on new rtx4s and I’m not sure there’s any reason not to save $$ as long as performance matches. I’m pretty sure all wedges spin well but like you stated finding the right bounce/grind is key.

I’d have to agree with you. I feel like now a days there’s only so much manufacturers can do with the wedge. Just like the drivers. Have to go on looks, feel, and versatility. Wilson staff forged and T20 caught my eye because of the forging. I think a lot of us want/demand to play forged irons because of the feel/feedback/sound but when it comes to wedges we just turn the other cheek. They are one of the most “feel” clubs out there very rarely do you go 100% with a wedge swing haha

I owned a set of SM6 when they came out and I just could not get along with them. I then had the RTX3, which worked better, but I switched to the RTX4 because it looked better and just felt "right" when hit my shots. I used the 54* mid bounce and a 58* low bounce and could not be happier.

I tested the T20 at a demo and was very impressed. Felt great. However, the T20 looked thicker which was a bit of a turn-off, personal preference.

I've played vokeys for as long as I can remember but have recently switched to rtx4's from SM7s. It started with needing a better option for my 60, i needed a lower grind option, and i never got along with the 60/04 L grind from vokey so I tried the xlow/03 of the rtx4. Long story short, all my wedges are rtx4 now. The rtx3 definitely had a ton of offset but i dont see any with the 4, and i think i just get better spin and launch windows now than with my vokeys.

I have some RTX4's and so SM7's. I prefer the RTX4 wedges. I know Vokeys are good, they are widely played and have a rep they earned. But I like how the cleveland wedges play more.

With my last set of irons, I added a Cleveland 588 53º and a Cleveland 691 58º. Now I play the 53 that matches my irons and a Vokey low bounce 58.

There's no appreciable difference in my short game.

I would guess that Cleveland and Titleist wedges are equally good, but that some players would notice a big enough difference to have a preference and others might not.

Hard to argue with those prices! One other thing that made the decision easier was the finish. I love the raw look and that being an option made the switch that more seamless.

That’s one thing I touched on before, I feel all the manufacturer’s (like with drivers) are limited to the amount of performance they can put into a wedge. I’m sure if you took a hand full of wedges brand new they will all relatively spin around the same number due to groove and face limitations. Appreciate your feedback. Looks and feel will def be the winner on my choice.
