Patrick Reed's lawyer tried to silence Brandel Chamblee (NO POLITICS)

I agree. It is dumb. That’s why I pointed it out.

Whens the last penalty a player called on themselves ? It’s extremely rare in the pro game. Not called over for clarification, but actually called a penalty on themselves.

Its an old old wives tale from the tweed and hickory days. And I’m about as conservative and history minded in this game as anybody you’ll find.

Yep. I remember that one now , but I’ve thought hard and couldn’t recall it on my own.

i agree with the tradition and idea. But in practical terms they have referees and committees for a reason. Because the pro game is not self governing. Never has been.

? good job.

Thats 1 percent of all penalties levied in pro golf for the last year.

you know as well as I do that it’s really rare. So Why argue it ?

Lol. Ever figure out if your friend is moving sand on his backswing or practice swing ?

And for the record. Go read. I quickly said that I did misquote you. But I haven’t got a clarification from you yet on your pal.

Nope. I’m saying it’s rare. Most penalties now in the pro game are called on the player. Not solely by the player. In my opinion.

but that’s even beside the point in the argument. The poster I replied to asserted that by definition Reed cheated. Maybe he did. But I ask if he was prepared to call every sports player called for a penalty a cheater. And to my shock. Rather than see the error in that logic. He says something to the effect of yes. By definition they are. So it’s a fruitless discussion.

It would be interesting to know how many penalties that aren’t penalty area/lost ball/out of bounds there are.

of course we really only hear about the big ones because “DJ Trahan has ball move in rough, assessed 1 shot penalty, missed cut by 4” just isn’t very interesting.

On what basis are you arguing it’s “extremely rare” and “most penalties” are called on, not called by, the player?

See my above edit. It’s my opinion , of course there is no data on it either way. But I watch a ton of all tours. You just don’t see many penalties period. But you don’t see this idea that it’s all players calling things on themselves. I love that romantic idea too . But are we now calling all players who don’t notice something and call it on themselves cheaters ?

Site crashed. Couldn’t get my entire thought out before it did.

There’s no basis at all for it. Pros call penalties on themselves all the time. OB, hazard drops, etc. All the simple ones are self-called. And the whole reason for calling an official over is by and large to call a penalty on yourself in a more complicated situation and make sure you’re getting it right. (Well, either that or to make sure you’re applying the rules in a way that keeps you from being penalized while getting a free drop into a much more favorable situation, but that’s a different thread....)

Anyway, penalties applied via video review after the fact are vanishingly rare compared to both self-called penalties and to calling an official over specificity for the purpose of calling a penalty on oneself.

How many times has a video penalty happened in the last few months besides Reed? I can’t think of one. How many balls were hit out of bounds just yesterday? Dozens across all tours no doubt. “Pros don’t call penalties on themselves” is beyond grasping at straws. It’s simply not true.

I've seen some pretty favorable drops for balls in hazards/penalty areas over the years. Some of which have been discussed ad nauseam here with some of the players referred to as cheaters. These days rules officials are called almost every time relief is taken. Even then, the rules official depends on the player's description of what happened.

With the advanced camera coverage a large proportion of shots are recorded. It won't be long before instant replay is available on all the shots.

Sure. On that technicality sure. You’re right. But nobody including the person I was discussing it with was talking OB and hazard calls. We where talking calling things that nobody else can see. Aside from zoom cameras that is .

So I’ll concede. This game is totally called by the players. Fire all the referees and the officials in the truck. They aren’t needed. ( biggest eye roll possible ).

I probably should have stayed out of this.

I honestly don't really care about Chamblee or anybody's personal opinion about this stuff. I'm not a fan of 24/ 7 anything. I don't watch CNN or Fox news or any of that stuff. I hate all the non stop chatter about everything. Same with the NFL Network or any of those shows.

I'm not on twitter or facebook or any of that stuff. This is as close as I come to social media anything.

I love golf and would watch any tournament that they put on. Does not matter what tour it is on. I can do without all the stupid news shows. 24/7 anything usually turns into a stupid fest of useless chatter.

Here’s Brandel,

”I don’t care what camera angle. You can go overhead, you can go down the line, you can go face on. He would have known he was moving sand in the path of his club. Improving his lie”

This is pretty bold but he seems to be saying...

Reed cheated, knew he was, and that it’s a fact, not an opinion.

The most famous self called penalty that I can recall would be Brian Davis at I think Sea Island or Harbour Town. On the 72nd hole he pulled his ball left into the sandy, reedy, waste area. On his backswing of his third shot he thought he may have caught one of the reeds thus improving his intended swing path. He called an official over and he , after a TV review, confirmed what nobody else had seen, Davis had indeed clipped a grass stalk or reed. He was in the lead at the time and in line to win his first PGA Tour event, the resulting 2 shot penalty reduced him to second place and handed victory to Jim Furyk.

NB I've just googled and it was indeed Harbour Town in 2010.

Davis deserved a medal for that. I still remember watching it live. For a guy of his stature on tour , needing a win, to call THAT penalty on himself with how tiny and insignificant it was to the play.....sometimes we say the rules screw over people, they screwed over Davis about as bad as anyone at that tournament. The penalty was 100% called on himself, no one "caught" it or asked for a review.

FWIW, he probably wouldn't have won the tournament anyway as he was in a waste area and his competitor was on the green in regulation....but you never know.
