What is the windiest round of golf you've ever had?

I remember reading a write up of the 1986 Open at Turnberry. Round 1 the weather was atrocious. Average score was something like 78 and the way this was written was "there was a nasty rumour going around that Ian Woosnam had shot level par, but no one believed it".

Played quite a few times in steady 40 with gusts about 50-55. Fun days though, ripped drives into the wind would go 230 and then next hole downwind would go over 400. The crosswind holes were fun trying to gauge how far [off] the green you needed to start the ball.

You MUST hit the ball solid in order to navigate the wind properly. If you mis-hit a shot in high winds your ball will get eaten up every time. Also while putting widen your stance for stability in case a gust catches you slightly off guard and you have to factor wind into putts. Especially down hill, downwind putts

Outstanding guess and correct!

I forgot that one of our guys fell over on the tee box on 8 during a gust. He didn't faceplant, but it was still pretty funny.

I know the course extremely well and play on a Michigan Publinx team out of there. Not a single day where it isn’t windy on that course and if there ever was I’m pretty sure it would be the Apocalypse.

Two come to mind. First is at Pacific Grove when a storm was blowing out. Flagsticks couldn't stay in the hole. The other was at Rams Hill. Miserable day: hot, windy as all get out. Blowing sand would stick to the sunscreen. On top of it, the restaurant was closed so it was another hour and a half drive back to La Quinta to have a very late lunch. Like I said, miserable day. Tequila and pizza back at the hotel afterward helped.

Blackheath is an underrated course. It's actually one of my favorites to play and wind is often a factor there. The third hole can be tricky, as wind can blow through the forest chute from the fourth tee box, make a left turn, and then you get some strange winds happening near the third green. 16 seems to always have a headwind, and that hole and 9 always the most difficult for me.

It's a very fun course with out without wind. On windy days I've hit some drives there well beyond my normal distance, as a tailwind from the hilltop tees can make you feel like Dustin Johnson.

Twice in college I played when the wind was blowing a steady 50 -60mph. The first time I walked downwind of a bunker next to the green. I made sure I didn't do that again, I got sand blasted! We only played 9 holes that tournament and then it was cancelled. The second time was up in Iowa. On one par five that was only around 540 yds. we played it straight into the wind. I hit driver, driver, driver and a punch 9 iron then a couple of putts and I was glad I made a 6. Playing in wind like that not only wears you out mentally but it is physically exhausting.

Yep, Tierra del Sol! Playing on the shores of Caribbean in Aruba where the wind is constantly blowing. On the north side of the island where the course is, the wind is stronger and steady. Fun, but crazy at times. Really enjoyed the course, too.

Mullion Golf Club sits on top of a cliff in Cornwall. I played a foursomes tie one winter in the 80's with a steady 40 gusting 55 mph westerly. I couldn't reach the 190 yard 1st with a driver. My partner was a 28 handicapper who hit low runners. I was off 5 and could hit low runners as well. Our opponents were 9/10 handicappers who hit high fades which were blown all over the place.

We won 9 and 8 after halving the downwind 10th.

Most memorable moments from playing there:

-golf balls in the cacti that were like 30 yards in front of, but still 30 yards to the left/right of the tee box. How the....??

-feeling like a boss hitting driver 330. So what if it's downwind like 30mph????

-Puring a ball and watching the wind literally move it 40 yards offline.

-Snakes on the f'ing greens!!!

Haha. No snakes, but we had goats in the fairways. Hysterical. The cacti was pretty remarkable, too. I remember making similar comments. Love hitting pw 170 one hole and hitting 7i 125 the next.

Yeah I remember one of the par 3's being super down wind and I was like welp, I'm about to try and make this PW go 160, here we go. Somehow hit the green, was super amazed. Hitting driver was such a crap shoot. I didn't have the skills or b@lls to start my drives heading toward OB or other fairways and trust the wind to bring it back. I essentially was at the mercy of the wind and just let my ball go where ever. Think I shot a 98 or something ridiculous.

I've played in 30mph winds. I had a blast.

My most memorable shot of the round was hitting 5 wood into an uphill 150 yard par 3. Hit a balloon shut into the gust and it managed to hold the back of the green

Ya, I had such an up and down round. Had a couple birdies, but also a couple doubles, lol. I believe I shot 84. Looking forward to playing it again in April.

In 2008, I was squeezing in a quick nine at a local executive course in Southwest Ohio. It was already windy but manageable. By the time I reached the seventh hole, it was totally unmanageable . . . the ball would simply roll right off the green. I just sort of shrugged all this off and finished the round. When I got home, the wife and I had a late lunch on the back deck, and the wind was just howling. Soon, tree limbs, then some trees, were snapping and falling. Finally, we retreated inside. That was Hurricane Ike, causing $1.25B in damages state-wide, lost power for two weeks.

Nice, have fun. I played that other 9 hole course there and I met and played with a pilot who flew there all the time from Netherlands. Said he did something like fly there 3-4 times a month for a big jet liner. Would fly in say on a Monday , stay over night and hang out in Aruba expenses all paid for Tues and Weds, then fly a plane back Thurs morn. He'd then get a few days off at home, then rinse and repeat. I think he told me he barely worked more than 80-100 hours a month or something absurd. I don't remember his exact routine but I just remember thinking mannnnnn this dude is living the dream. He probably does the Aruba run for a few months then switches to some other place with way better weather than most of us here get.

Played Gullane #2 last fall, and gusts were up to 55+mph. Caddy said the Scottish Open would definitely have been suspended. Hit driver, 3-wood 40 yards short on a downhill, 400yard hole (into), and then hit a 3 iron 345 yards uphill (downwind). Just completely messes with your head all day. Somehow managed to birdie the last four (all downhill, downwind) to shoot even. One of the best feeling rounds I've ever played for sure.

Ya I played Links of Divi as well. I like how the courses are completely different experiences. That pilot sure has it all figured out. Very hard to beat Aruba.

Sustained winds of about 90km, with gusts to about 110. Hit a drive 470 yards downwind on the second hole and ending up hitting a head-high 3 iron a few holes later to a 140 yard par 3 and coming up short (generally about a 230-235 shot). Also went 4-iron, 8 iron into a 570 yard par 5.
