Vokey spin milled red saw 58°

Recommended Posts

Just some quick thoughts/opinions. I have a brand new (shop worn) vokey spin milled 2009 year I believe red saw and red numbers. I know this is non conforming, but my friends and I play against each other and no tournaments other than charity. Is it worth shafting it up? Is there really a huge difference in spin characteristics than new wedges on today’s market? Like I said we play for fun and no wagers so I have no problems playing it, but wonder if it’s even worth it. Should I just hold it captive for years until I can make some cash? Haha I’ll attach a photo maybe I could be all wrong about it.

From what I have read these were the last wedges before the new groove rule. They are non conforming for tournament play and such. I’m looking to see if there’s any benefit to playing them for fun weekend matched with the guys. If not I’ll hold on to it. Can’t seem to find many around and there’s some brand new ones floating around on eBay for a wild $200-300.

Yes. Last model before groove change. I bought an extra back then and still throw it in the bag on occasion. Best Vokey wedge ever in my opinion

Way way way more spin, and unless you are playing in tournaments, it kosher.

I thought for non-pros they were still gravy until 2024 anyway, but maybe it was 2020.

i still bag one as my lob wedge, and FWIW, I find the prior year’s black saws to be the best, and you can find them with limited wear on the bay for 60-75 bucks

I had a PM grind 58, RTX2, and a SM5 prior to bagging the spin milled again, which I had played when I was younger.

Night and day difference in spin and lower trajectory. This was especially big when I didn’t clip it just right, or when the ball is in the rough.

The box grooves are just easier to get big RPMs. When I hit a perfectly struck ball off a fairway lie with my SM7, the spin differences are much less noticeable, but the red saw/spin milled spins no matter what I do, whereas the SM7 required the right swing to match it. Hope that makes sense.

For someone who plays for fun, spinning it this much is just flat enjoyable. You do rip covers on full shots or very long partial wedges... so you know that.

HB4BICT2ALEW.jpegThe SM7 is the first wedge to be in any way better than the CG14. The CG14 has more carry, is more forgiving, and spins more than any current wedge. Hit full, the 58 degree lob wedge spins too much to really control distance. Also, everyone you play with will instantly know you’re a damn cheater.

The advantage is between 20 and 60 yards, where it turns pitches into lawn darts. You just aim at the flag and the ball stops instantly.

I switch back and forth between a well-gamed red saw and near new SM7 when I'm messing around. I really can't tell a big difference in the outcomes.

The SM1 and those (SM2) were definitely nutty when it came to spin. I don't know that i'd ever want to use one for a full shot on anything but the fastest greens for fear of not being able to control it. The amount of spin you can generate around the greens with those things and the right technique is absurd.

I actually stopped using my ones because of the spin rate, they spun too much and would balloon a little on me. And they just flat out ruined balls, instantly. Fingers of cover coming off. Still a hoot though. But I score better with conforming ones.

But a lie with wet grass and I miss them occasionally.

The irony of someone here saying people will know you are an expletive cheater if they see you playing it, when it’s conforming for amateurs till 2024...

I was pretty sure I had read the rules right, and I couldn’t care less what some random person I get paired with thinks anyhow.

If I actually had the time to play competitions, I’d check the rules and follow them.

There are external rules and personal perceptions. Sometimes they are aligned, sometimes not. The implementation of the ‘groovy’ rules created a negative impression on those who attempted to circumvent them, eg Phil and his Eye2’s, that persistent, regardless of the rules in effect for a particular event.

The main downside to playing these wedges for me is that optimizing your play with one set of wedges is already adequately challenging. Including multiple performance envelopes is ultimately self defeating.

This too is a great point. I was just going about it for fun. These days I would much have consistent spin numbers, can’t have a shot pitch pin high and spin back 10ft. Agreed spin management is a better priority to have. Make sure you can hit a shot with all wedges and have it hip and stop rather than spinning way too much and there goes a 3 putt haha

And as a footnote to my earlier post, when I got fitted and switched to my next variation in Vokeys, a little less spin, better technique, not hitting wedge full out, lol, and lower ball flight turned out to be a better overall combo. But man even with bad technique those puppies could spin (and chew up balls).
