By 2010, I had been playing for about five years and had a pretty consistent game. I often reached down to the low 80s, with my best round being an 81. I rarely scored in the 90s anymore. I got divorced in 2011 and became a single father with primary custody of my 1 year old daughter. I still played, but not nearly as much. In summer 2011, I threw out my back and injured it a couple more times throughout the year. With the injury and being a single parent, I put down the sticks. I threw out my back again in 2013 and accepted that I probably wouldn't be able to return to golf. I moved to Virginia in 2016 and made friends with some guys who golf. I was cleaning out my storage area in January 2017 and came across an old set of clubs. I decided to go play a round to see if my back could hold up. I played pretty terribly, but I enjoyed the heck out of myself. I hit a small handful of beautiful shots and I instantly got hooked again. I slowly got my game back, got new clubs, and shot my lowest round (76) in the summer of 2018. Everything was going so well. I ended up doing some serious damage to my elbow in January of 2019 and it really made my whole 2019 very tough. Just last month I was able to go hit balls and be mostly pain free. Shot an 88 this morning, so I'm starting my second comeback. Hoping to close out 2020 where I left off both in 2011 and 2018.

Pretty decent decade for me. I was in my "prime" in 2008 which was when I was hitting balls for hours every day and playing 3-4 times a week.

Decided to make a move out of the golf industry and got into the corporate scene. Quickly found out the 40 hour weeks didn't help out the golf game. I'll say this - I have way more fun playing as a low-single digit HCP than I ever did as a +1 where I had the naivety to think I should break 70 every time and be on tour.

I still broke 70 maybe 5-6 times over the last 9 years or so. I've had some of my WORST rounds in the mid-90s, too. I appreciate the game way more now.

2020 will be my 22nd year of playing.

Oh, and I had two aces! One in 2018 and one in 2019!

Quit playing end of 2001. Mostly due to migraines and a wrist injury that kept me from playing for almost 3 years.

i started teaching golf and helped run a non profit for junior golfers through 2011. I played maybe 10 full rounds a year, working two + jobs to pay our bills.

in 2011 a member at the club I taught at convinced me to go to Champions q school. I had to borrow irons from a friend (my old ones were square groove) but managed to get to finals , missing some status by 3 or 4 shots

Started playing and practicing again and gained conditional status for 2015 and 2016.

was starting to play decently when I was injured when hit from behind in a golf cart by another player in July 2016 The accident caused a mess of shoulder injuries and I haven’t really been able to play since. I’ve tried a number of times but the limited range of motion and pain as I release through a full swing make it miserable.

surgery has been discouraged by multiple doctors as my rehab and injections have eliminated chronic pain, but I have issues with pain in certain motions and Golf is unfortunately one of them.

Im teaching more now and sadly moving past playing again

So first of all, have you played golf the entire decade, or did you take up the game somewhere along the way?

Played the entire decade – almost.

How many equipment changes do you think you made?

Irons and one driver, only. One wedge in brand.

Has your game significantly improved?

Maintained.

Do you have any decade parting standout funny stories to share?

Won a “good Friday” tournament for a church and one of the prizes was a giant can of tuna – huge can.

(can’t eat meat on Friday’s in Lent)

Tell us something about your golf decade 2010-2019...

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way – in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times:

My solid foursome split up in 2010. One guy moved and the others joined a different club. These were my guys, my solid guys. Gone. It hurt bad. A-holes. I mean really bad. It hurt to use the toilet. I will never forgive them. Anyway, I left the game for almost 12 months until one day in 2011 my son approached me after another bittersweet year of fall baseball.   He came to me as I was washing his mom’s car in the driveway.  His request still rings in my heart today. “Dad”, he said, “will you teach me to play golf?” After stumbling over the bucket and falling on my face, I looked up and said yes.  I told him I was going to teach him a different way to play golf. We dried off the car, I changed my wet clothes, put a bandage on my face and we went to a nearby public course.  We started at the green. I told him, “son, you need to know what to do when you arrive on or near the green.”   We putted, then we chipped, then we pitched. A few weeks later we hit from short approach shots – he was good from the start. I couldn’t control myself, so we went to the range. I put a ball on the tee, handed him my wife’s driver and told him to hit it. The kid hit a perfect draw and subsequently hit every shot thereafter. I was overjoyed. He moved quickly from shooting 112 his first time out to shooting 79 as an 11-year old, beating his dad by a shot. We re-joined a new club and have been there ever since. He’s a scratch player now and looking to play golf in college. He’s won multiple tournaments. Great kid. There is not a round that goes by when he and I play that I don’t think of the day he asked me to teach him.  He moved far beyond my instruction after 12 months, but I will contend his short game is the best I have ever seen. He can do anything around the greens and his putting is second to none.  The decade was about my kid and me.  I still play occasionally with my old buddies and guys at the club and we have a blast but sharing golf with my children – there is nothing like it.

PS. I joined WRX in 2014.  Good bunch of people around here. It’s my first and only web forum (aside from Jo-Ann Fabrics).

Thank you for allowing me to post

Yeah I remember when you first came into the Jo Ann Fabric forum all young and dumb and full of cross stitching theories. Ferguson's name over there was Flosstuber68. He developed quite a reputation as a reggae beanie stitcher. Second to none I tell ya. The dude could just flat out knit! Us regulars thought he was a bit of a braggart especially when he claimed he knitted the sock props in that notorious Red Hot Chili Peppers video in which they wear only socks on their.... He got that gig by out bidding knitting legends JuJu, Rosie Greer, Jan Craig and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Anyway, he was a prolific poster well on his way to a gold watch then poof! And now I know why. His kid got him out on the course. Way to go kid!

Steele, you were there when my theories were criticized and torn apart. You made it to the rank of ESC (executive stitch commander) at a tender age and I wanted nothing else but to join those ranks.

My early days at Jo-Ann were a blend of excitement, fervor and cockeyed optimism as I wanted to be a SC (stitch commander) more than anything else in life.  It was my dream to wear the SC badge on my sleeve.  I wanted it too badly and it cost me dearly.  Do you remember I attempted to cut corners and did that plaid satin stitch job on that chiffon saree?  I got bloody on that job and almost quit Jo-Ann. I took a lot of heat for that one. But, you pulled me back in and helped me to gain my confidence back.

Then that one October night I was sitting in a pile of fabric cutoffs drunk on emotion when I got the call from Chad Smith. Here is a transcript from the call:

Ferg: Hello

Chad: Dude, socks, socks only -video

Ferg: I won the bid?

Chad: dude

Ferg: I beat Rosie and Jan, no way?

Chad: dude

Those socks earned me the badge that I cherish more than anything else – the badge of Stitch Commander. Since then I have been on the cutting edge (no pun intended) at Jo-Ann. I’ve done work for Ricki Lake, Brendon Frazier, Adrain Zmed and most recently the sheer curtains for The Film Library of Bob Crane.
